"Survivor" Goes to China

Quite frankly, I don't see what Survivor has to do with Chinese culture or stereotypes... it's essentially a game show set as far away from people as they can find. It's nothing more than a backdrop to the spoiled Americans crying and fighting. I find it odd that this reporter should think it should convey something "enlightening" about the Chinese.

I can't believe how stupid Jeff Probst is. Doesn't he know that Asia has more than 1 country and comprise of different ethnicities? It's just like saying a French is considered the same as an Italian. Very ignorant and stupid of him to even make that comment! The host of the show now has learned something; I hope the viewers do.

I would expect no more "enlightenment" than that provided by season 13's racial split for tribes.
Anyone looking at those tribe for inferences on the behavior of any particular race is hopelessly grasping at straws.
This is a 1 hour weekly show focusing on entertainment, not enlightenment.
I'm also not expecting too much from this season with all the whining so far about the "conditions" they must endure. Give me a break! The show is Survivor- what were they expecting?

I'm asian, and I have to say I am so tired of all these articles (especially from asian-american magazines) complaning about how people misunderstand, don't know, or are ignorant of all these various asian things.

Look the stereotypes are unfortunatley there and people are just by nature not informed of a great number of things. I for one don't find it particularly helpful to worry about this or get angry about it. It is what it is. If some people don't know the difference between a Japanese and Chinese person that's their problem.

I was not defending a bad TV show. I was saying a TV show should not be used to make sweeping generalizations about the intelligence of a nation's citizenry.

TV in China is very bad, and often has shows that are trashier （or at the very least more myopic） than shows in America. Hence the usage of the word "supposedly"--the earlier poster's point was that a civilization's moral values are supposed to decline as it falls; but China's TV values seem to be declining as the rest of it rises as a whole. Therefore, if you DO believe that China is rising, then clearly using TV as some kind of compass for the trajectory of an entire civilization is worthless.

I also call into question the notion that America's general citizenry, or China's general citizenry, or the entire world's general citizenry, have ever had anything more than bad taste.

Again, nations and civilizations do not become powerful or ascendant because of an enlightened citizenship--they do so because their leadership exploits the political and economic system to their own advantage.

I wonder though, since TV stations everywhere (including China) do their market research, whether or not these types of shows did indeed reflect the appetites of average TV viewers in China?
