As Ahmadinejad was speaking at Columbia (click on Al-Jazeera clip, above) and the United Nations (IRNA's transcript, Part 1, here) this week, Iranian authorities were releasing Ali Shakeri from Evin Prison. He's the last of four Iranian-Americans to be freed from detention. He had to post the equivalent of $107,000 bail and may not be able to leave Iran for the U.S.

Columbia President Lee Bollinger's insulting attack on Ahmadinejad, meanwhile, has Iranians rallying around the Iranian president back home: MPs, academics. Even Ahmadinejad's political arch-enemy, Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani rushed to his defense.

Iranian President’s U.S visit has brought to our notice the most derogatory side of the socalled modern and civilised society called the West. Columbia univesity President was naïve enough to not to have made distinction between outright criticism and insult. Was it an appropriateway to introduce a distinguished guest who are usually invited to such gathering so that the students of such institutions benefit from the experiences of such people so that their own canvass can be broadened.
The US should not faulter in understanding that Iran is a highly cultured society and the US will rather benefit from its brush with Iran in various ways. We must learn to respect our guests especially the one who the fate has given the honour to head an academic institution of some repute. The Columbia University President could not be more despicable. Rather it spoke volums about the Zionist (not Jewish) influence on him.
