The Top 2 Top 10 Lists

Time.com has posted my top 10 video games of the year and my top 10 graphic novels of the year. Take a spin through them. There may be no better time this year to call me an idiot! Though there have been some pretty good ones. And the year ain't over yet.

What did I leave off? As far as the video games go, I note that there's no massively multiplayer love on there. It's surprising how few really good new entries there were this year, when you think about how heavily this was tagged as a growth area. Should Tabula Rasa be on there? It's really hard to know -- part of it is that the deck is stacked against MMO's, critically, because they're so hard to review. Blah blah blah.

Graphic novels: I put two webcomics on the list, Achewood and Erfworld. I couldn't decide whether webcomics belonged on a graphic novels list at all, and I wasted way way too much time thinking about it before I finally decided these two were just too deeply great to leave off the list, whether or not it really made sense, and their greatness qualifies them for virtually any list of anything. Then I went to bed and slept soundly.

I also wrote Time's list of the best novels of the year. This may or may not interest you, but my pick as best novel of the year, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, is worth a look just for its extremely authentic portrait of a fat, awkward Dominican-American nerd. Not something you see enough of in contemporary literature.

Can I call your web guys idiots instead? One item per page? It takes time.com longer to load than to read each item. And counting up from number one? (Ooh, I can't wait to see who made number ten!)

The trick with listing webcomics like Erfworld is that it is still in progress. It could end up ending badly. (I mean, it's possible. In theory.)

I'll give my feedback on the video games when I get through the list, though. Or maybe when I get to the list. Then again, my feedback on video games won't be worth much, because all I've played for the last 2 years are WoW and KotOR.

@ church, yeah, I know. welcome to the content biz. and it does make extra-special-no-sense to do it backwards like that. I will mention to the production crüe.

blah blah blah Halo 3 blah blah blah

reads more like an advertisment than a review, how much does microsquash pay you?

Tuco, didn't you see this posting? http://time-blog.com/nerd_world/2007/09/halo_3_this_is_what_you_get.html
He was paid exactly:

1 Bag
1 Halo 3-themed Xbox 360
2 Halo 3-themed controllers (one Brute, one Spartan)
2 Halo 3 figurines
1 Halo 3 wireless headset
1 HDMI cable
1 Halo 3 Legendary Edition (the one w/ the humongous Master Chief head in it -- hey, he does look a bit like my ex)
2 Xbox Live Gold cards
2 Live points cards, 1600 points each
1 press kit (this in itself comes in a little military-style metal tin)
2 MREs (whatevs -- sadly, I'll probably end up eating these some night when I'm working late)
2 UNSC dog tags (again, personalized w/ my gamertag)
1 first aid kit

I think it was probably the MREs that pushed him from journalistic detachment over the line to... well, whatever lengths you're accusing him of.

Or, wait, did he actually enjoy the game? I forget. Lev?

@dennitzio -- Did you read the posts following the Halo3 swag post? Because there weren't any for about four days. I'd say he enjoyed the game. ;)

I'd agree that webcomics can fit within the same continuum as graphic novels. Especially since we have some good examples of creators bypassing monthly publication of "floppy" issues for regular semi-daily webpublication and online sales of collected trades. (Girl Genius by the Foglios and Finder by Carla Speed McNeil being the best examples.)

is pretty witty, even though it follows a formulaic "daily strip" post. It's fairly irreverent, witty, and has some quite good parodioc moments.

Yes, parodioc. Idiotic and parody wrapped up into one big squishy word for your enjoyment.

I enjoy Erf World. It's fantastic. I'm pretty much in agreement with Overlord Lev.

the video games list was rather *too* xbox 360-focused, leaving off excellent PS3 games like Ratchet & Clank and Uncharted, and the just-released Unreal Tournament III. Also, no Crysis? Overall, pretty pathetic and fanboyish.

Why not actually do a Top Ten webcomics list? With newspaper circulation (and print cartoonists) dropping like flies lately, maybe it's time for a look at the future of comic strips.

Lev, you should do a Top Ten blog comments list. I nominate 'disgusted' above. Irony FTW!

I think the Top Ten Video Games should have been the Top Ten Video Games That Aren't World of Warcraft. Because come on, when you've got the Shatt doing commercials for you, you've reached the top of the mountain.

Good job on the vid game list. Glad you left the s#!+ that is PS3 off the list even though PS3 fanbois will whine, I think its pretty fair and accurate.

Sales numbers will generally support your rankings - and don't us mindless consumers vote for their favorite video games with our wallets?

In addition to the kind of overwhelming focus on 360 games, I thought it was interesting that 90% of the games was a first-tier release on disc (the only exception being Phantom Hourglass, still a pretty big-name release). I might have liked to have seen some nods to downloadable stuff. I know Space Giraffe wasn't everyone's cup of tea, but I feel like it's pretty representative of a relatively new direction in experimental games. Jenova Chen's flOw was technically 2006, I suppose, but it came to the PS3 in 2007, so I figure it's at least as valid as a recompilation of Peanuts strips.

And speaking of the comics list, I can't help but notice that it represents the "big two" much more heavily than in some previous years. Maybe that's just because back when Andrew Arnold was doing the lists, there seemed to be more of a need to remind the world that you can talk about comics without talking about Marvel/DC. Or, of course, Andrew's tastes were just different from Lev's – and I won't begrudge a nerd for his tastes.

Halo 3 as #1? It's single-player was decent at best and while it's multi-player is pretty good, other games released this year, such as CoD4 or TF2, do a better job.

Like the previous two Halo games, Halo 3 is overrated as all hell.

Other than that, a pretty decent list otherwise.

How did Ace Combat 6 get on there? Where's the love that Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 deserves? Burn my dread!
