The Day the Steampunk Died

Mostly today I'm trying to avoid listening to bad buzz about Indy 4lalalalalalalalala I can't hear you.

I'm doing this while also trying to avoid looking at this piece in the New York Times Style section about steampunk fashion. Not that there isn't a lot of useful information in there, but I do miss the days when steampunk was a subgenre of science fiction and one could enjoy it without the risk of being cool. (And I'm sorry, but nobody ever watches the movie of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen for any reason, steampunky or otherwise.)

I'll try to calm down by watching the undulating clockwork of the Analytical Engine:

On an unrelated note: id Software is making Doom 4. A lot of people were down on Doom 3, which I had a hard time understanding, because, you know, shooting monsters. Though one is of course more interested in the id's intriguingly non-id-like Rage, due out later this year? I hope? Judging from this trailer it's more punk than steam:

Off topic, but first few minutes of Speed Racer is up on Yahoo and it really does rock. Seven minutes of serious rock. 720p/1080p. http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/speedracer.html?showVideo=1. I'm going to need heart attack medicine for this movie, I think...

Not to be mean, but WTF??? I mean, come on, steampunk is cool, why ruin it by making it mainstream???

Really, what will happen to my space pirate role plays if they keep doing crap like this? They won't be cool anymore...

Wrong, but somehow not exactly surprising. We all know the cinemas will be packed opening weekend anyway. Is it too soon to start counting down the days?

BTW, am bumming about the Boston Globe's review of Speed Racer. While still fully intending to take the boys to see it, am now nervous it won't be the full-tilt fun I was hoping for.

Every time the NYT writes about trends, it ends up on stuff-white-people-like, which cracks me up.
The NYT wrote about nerdcore and MC Chris/Frontalot last year and thankfully no one picked up on it, yet. (Well, SXSW did, but that was bound to happen).
