The First Seven Minutes of Speed Racer

They're below. In theory anyway. The Yahoomatic streaming looks pretty wonky.

This movie is turning out to be extremely divisive -- I'm seeing pans and raves all over the mediaverse. Personally I loved it and walked out of the screening thinking I'd seen a monster hit. Anybody else seen it?

Church:

I dunno. The 'drifting to the max' car racing seems overdone. And I'm not sure about the cartoon callouts in the soundtrack.

I'm thinking this is matinee caliber viewing at this point.

Tereglith:

Although it looks kinda fun, we'll wait for it to hit blockbuster, and spend all our popcorn money at Indy and Caspian.

Joel Meadows:

I went to see Speed Racer last Sunday and I thought it was bloody horrible. Made me wonder what happened to the Wachoskis and to a lesser extent, to John Goodman…

dude_from_portland:

I saw it last night and loved it! Reminded me of why I go to the movies and don't download them! (aside from that being illegal lol) As long as you go into it with the mindset of a little kid, you won't be let down. It's when you try to make sense of it and poke holes in the movie that it seems stupid.

Oh and the final race is amazing! Say what you will about the Wachowski Brothers...they know how to get you on the edge of your seat!

Tereglith:

Saw iron man yesterday. It was good, definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

Kemper:

dude from portland nailed it. If you go in with a kid's mindset and remember that they're making a live version of anime, you'll have a blast. Never seen anything like it, and probably won't again considering how little money it made. Too bad.

Dave:

dude from portland indirectly brings up a good point - why people see movies. If I want to be a kid and not think about things, I'll watch cartoon network, comedy central, CNN, or something else on TV. If I'm going to dish out for a movie ticket/popcorn/soda, I want it to be for something worthwhile. That's why I hated The Fast and the Furious but loved Reign Over Me.

I know that's just me, and everyone is perfectly entitled to their opinions, so if you went and liked it, more power to ya.

Interesting Wachowski sidenote: last summer, I finally saw the third Matrix movie. I saw the first out of theaters and loved it, saw the second in theaters and hated it, and when I finally saw the third one, I was pleasantly surprised. Now, don't get me wrong - both the second and third movies had their very healthy portions of crap, but away from all the hype, I was able to enjoy the third movie.

Who knows... maybe in 5 years I'll catch Speed Racer on Adult Swim and enjoy it.

John:

I confess to being on a crusade for this movie. I went in expecting it to stink based on some terrible reviews. I thought it was a minor masterpiece.

My 7 year old enjoyed it and my 4 year old (who I'd only taken to avoid a meltdown) watched the entire thing and has told me several times how cool the races were.

I agree with dude, it's all about having the right frame of mind. Personally, I enjoyed this every bit as much as Iron Man.
