Sununu Targeted

The New Hampshire Union-Leader reports:

Retired generals, Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans and peace activists are taking aim at Sen. John Sununu.

The generals will be part of a half-million dollar television campaign starting today to criticize President Bush's Iraq policies and target Sununu and a dozen other senators and U.S. House members for supporting them.

Veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan plan to fly into the state in the morning as part of a six-state tour against the administration's war policies. Separately, peace activists said they plan to carry anti-war displays into Sununu's Manchester office and risk arrest.

Other Republican Senators up for reelection on the target list include Susan Collins, John Warner and Norm Coleman. But Sununu is arguably in the most difficult spot of all. Republicans in New Hampshire are still reeling from the wipeout they suffered in 2006, and Sununu will be under an incredible amount of additional pressure and scrutiny representing an early presidential primary state.

An ARG poll in late March showed Sununu trailing Jeanne Shaheen by ten points (24% to 34%, with 22% undecided) in a hypothetical rematch of their 2002 contest.

If the war continues to be an issue (which it will) and President Bush continues to be unpopular in the state (which he will), you get an idea of the very difficult task facing Senator Sununu.
