Craig Unlikely to Survive Scandal

SurveyUSA is out with a poll in Idaho on the Larry Craig scandal.

Less than 36 hours after the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call first broke the story of Larry Craig's arrest in an airport bathroom, 89% in Idaho are aware. SurveyUSA interviewed 600 Idaho adults the evening of 8/28/07 to measure initial reaction, including 475 registered voters who have heard the news accounts. Of Idaho voters, 55% today say Craig should resign. 34% say Craig should remain in office. 11% are not sure. Among Idaho Republicans, 45% say Craig should resign, 42% say Craig should remain in office.

Senate Republican leaders issued a joint statement late yesterday, in what looks like a clear warning shot to Craig, that he should expect little support from his GOP colleagues in the Senate.

This is a serious matter. Due to the reported and disputed circumstances, and the legal resolution of this serious case, we will recommend that Senator Craig's incident be reported to the Senate Ethics Committee for its review. In the meantime, leadership is examining other aspects of the case to determine if additional action is required.

I would expect the pressure for Craig to resign will only grow until it is clear to him, his best option is to step aside.
