AMES -- Sources in two campaigns confirm that the total number of votes cast in this year's Iowa Straw Poll will be significantly lower than the 23,685 cast in 1999. By 3pm, with just three hours of voting to go, just over 12,000 people had cast ballots. Meanwhile, buses are already leaving to transport voters to destinations across the state, and the Iowa State campus is emptying out.
