Craig Resigns

It's done: Senator Larry Craig resigned today, effective September 30. This means Republican Governor Butch Otter will appoint someone to serve out the rest of Craig's term, which runs until January 2009. The leading candidate for the job appears to be Lt. Gov. Jim Risch, who, provided he remains scandal-free and runs a decent campaign, would be favored to retain the seat for the GOP next year. All in all a stunning and rapid fall from grace for Senator Craig.
