Another GOP Retirement

Congresswoman Barbara Cubin of Wyoming won't seek reelection next year:
"In contemplating 2008, my overwhelming consideration has been the need of my family for me to come home," Cubin said in a statement issued at a meeting of the Wyoming Republican State Central Committee. "I look forward to coming home to be a friend, a wife, a mother, and especially a grandmother."
Cubin received just 60 percent of the vote in last year's Republican primary to beat challenger Bill Winney. She edged Democratic challenger Gary Trauner in the general election by only 48.3 percent to 47.8 percent.
"When it's this close, you probably did something wrong," Cubin said after the general election.
Trauner announced recently that he intends to run again for the seat. Reports filed with the Federal Election Commission last month showed Trauner had more than $168,000 since the 2006 campaign, compared to just $55,000 for Cubin.
Three Republicans have already announced they will run for the seat, including Winney, a retired naval officer. The other two are Cheyenne motivational speaker and substitute teacher Swede Nelson and Casper social worker Kenn Gilchrist.
NRCC Chairman Tom Cole released the following statement:
"Barbara Cubin, a member of the historic 1994 class, is a champion on environmental, natural resources and energy issues that are specifically important to her home state of Wyoming. Through her leadership on the Resources Committee, Barbara was able to strengthen Wyoming's economy, bring jobs to the state and improve the local infrastructure. Her service will be missed by both her colleagues in the U.S. House and her home state.
"Wyoming has elected Republican representation since the late seventies when Vice President Dick Cheney represented the state in the U.S. House. Wyoming is a ruby red state that will undoubtedly send another Republican to the House of Representatives in 2008."
