Here are today's top election stories, beginning with a story on Ron Paul:
"Ron Paul Raises More Than $4 Million in One Day" (David Kirkpatrick, New York Times) Well, it's not the most ever -- Hillary Clinton raised $6.2 million on June 30 -- but Ron Paul's $4 million haul in a single day beats any one-day total of all the GOP candidates. Impressive? Certainly, so enjoy the lead story, Ron Paul fans. Now about those poll numbers...
"Climate Is a Risky Issue for Democrats" (Juliet Eilperin, Washington Post) John Edwards is selling a climate plan -- 80% reduction in greenhouse gases from 1990s levels by 2050 -- that, according to reporter Eilperin, "will require a wholesale transformation of the nation's economy and society." Is it any wonder that the issue is "risky" for Democrats?
"Bloomberg Presidential Speculation Gets a Boost" (Grace Rauh, New York Sun) Do you get the sense that Michael Bloomberg, with all his billions, just likes toying with the media about a possible presidential run? The Mayor of New York City should remember that excessive MSM coverage does not, as a rule, translate into widespread support.
"McCain: Ethanol Subsidy Unneeded" (Tony Leys, Des Moines Register) You really have to admire a candidate who goes into the heart of Ethanol Country, to which seemingly any presidential hopeful must promise billions, and refuses to pander.
"Edwards's Strategy Could Benefit Obama" (Peter Canellos, Boston Globe) A nice look at how John Edwards has capitalized on last week's Democratic debate, even if reporter Canellos focuses too much on what Edwards is doing to bring down Clinton. Clinton is certainly the object of Edwards' attention, but the target is Obama.
"Thompson Talks Guns in N.H." (Joseph Curl, Washington Times) Fred Thompson continued his New Hampshire tour, this time stopping at a gun factory. Following Fred's speech, reporter Curl found one attendee whose instinctual admiration for Thompson is being tested by the candidate's lack of passion.
"Chris Dodd: The Happy Warrior" (David Lightman, Chicago Tribune) "ROLLING ACROSS THE IOWA PRAIRIE" is the dateline at this look at Chris Dodd's longshot effort to bet it all on Iowa.
"Romney, Rudy and the Electability Question" (Chris Cillizza, Washington Post) When you're the frontrunner, you aim your sights at the other party's frontrunner, or at least that's Rudy Giuliani's strategy, which is based in part on Giuliani's perceived "electability" against Clinton. It's that perception which Mitt Romney is trying to change.
"Obama Pops In For Sarasota Fundraiser" (Carol Lee, Sarasota Herald Tribune) With all the trimmings of an A-list celebrity, Barack Obama attended a fundraiser in a section of Florida which is giving generously to his campaign. Still, as reporter Lee reports from the scene, all the pomp seems to undermine Obama's grassroots message.
