The Detroit News today endorsed Sen. John McCain for the Republican nomination. Michigan holds its Presidential primary on January 15, one week after the New Hampshire primary and four days before South Carolina's Republican primary.

If McCain can pull out a win in New Hampshire, where he currently holds a 2.5-point lead in the RCP Average, an additional boost in momentum from a Michigan victory would serve him well heading into South Carolina, where he trails Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney and Fred Thompson in the RCP Average. He is also behind Huckabee and Romney in the Michigan RCP Average, but a New Hampshire victory would likely alter those numbers.
