On this day in 2002 President Bush made his controversial "Axis of Evil" speech during his State of the Union. On to today's top stories:
"Florida Election a Barometer for Country" (Marc Caputo and Lesley Clark, Miami Herald) Of course any paper would want to believe its state is the most important, but Florida really is unlike any other state, in that its demographics range from the Southern to the Northern, to large minority populations, to displaced Americans from all over. Whoever wins today will have proved that he can string together a nice-sized coalition, if not a majority, of Republicans, which would bode well for the general election.
"McCain, Romney Go Another Round in Fla." (Michael Shear and Perry Bacon Jr., Washington Post) Their feud is one for the books, and there will likely be a little bit of sadness when it's all over. Neither McCain nor Romney, however, will bow out following a loss in Florida today.
"Giuliani Seeks to Prove Experts Wrong" (Devlin Barrett, Associated Press) When you say that the winner of Florida will win the nomination, as Rudy does, then the logical alternative is that if you don't win Florida, you won't win the nomination. Rudy hinted that might be where he's headed, and said he'll make his decision on Wednesday.
"Huckabee Takes Low-Cost Route in Florida" (Louise Roug, Los Angeles Times) Short of cash and with few other resources, Mike Huckabee has always been at a disadvantage in Florida, and the polls show it. He's shown that he can win, if only one state, and that might be enough to keep him going beyond the Sunshine State.
"Kennedy Kin Back Obama" (Mike Allen and Carrie Brown, The Politico) If you didn't know already, Ted and Caroline Kennedy have endorsed Obama.
"Obama Mines Small, Traditionally Red States" (Peter Slevin, Washington Post) On the Democratic side, the hunt for delegates doesn't mean a candidate has to win an entire state. Obama, currently trailing in many Feb. 5 state, just has to pick up enough delegates to compete with Hillary, and that's why he was campaigning in Kansas today.
"McCain, Clinton Have Big Leads in California" (Cathleen Decker, Los Angeles Times) A new L.A. Times/CNN/Politico poll shows both Hillary and McCain with sizable leads in this most sizable of states. The difference is that McCain has momentum, while Hillary is simply holding her lead.
"Two Plays for Latino Vote" (Jonathan Kaufman and Gerald Seib, Wall Street Journal) The Battle of Feb. 5 is a battle for the Latino voter, who could sway a lot of states. Hillary holds an edge, but Obama might just need to pick up a few here and there to put him over the top.
"Will Young Voters Have an Impact?" (Martha Irvine, Associated Press) The conventional answer to this question is no, but Obama is disproving a lot of conventions these days, so the answer is more like maybe.
