Irish Prime Minister Bertie Ahern has announced he will resign next month, the BBC reports. Ahern, who just a few weeks ago visited with President Bush and Speaker Pelosi, among others, is currently being investigated for possible corruption with regards to financial dealings in the 1990s. However, Ahern said the investigation played no part in his resignation.
"While I will be the first to admit that I've made mistakes in my life and in my career, one mistake I've never made was to enrich myself by misusing the trust of the people," Ahern said, according to the BBC. "I have never received a corrupt payment and I've never done anything to dishonour any office that I've ever held."
