McCain vs. Schultz

An uproar ensued over the weekend after liberal radio host Ed Schultz called McCain a "warmonger" at a fundraising dinner. Although Obama was not in the room when Schultz said that, he later addressed the same conference.

Nevertheless McCain has asked for Obama to "condemn such language." In response the Obama campaign sent out this:

John McCain is not a warmonger and should not be described as such. He's a supporter of a war that Senator Obama believes should have never been authorized and never been waged.

Schultz however is sticking by his comments. On CNN this morning, Schultz said to John Roberts, "I'm sorry, John, the label sticks. John McCain is a warmonger."

Here's the thing about this type of flap: No candidate can be responsible for everything a supporter says. But both the Obama and McCain campaign have gone out of their way to disavow comments that were said by those near them, as McCain did with radio host Bill Cunningham. By making it an issue and demanding some kind of disavowal, however, the campaigns bring attention to these comments as a way of painting the other side as hitting below the belt.
