Runoffs Held Today In MS

There are primary runoffs being held today in two open Mississippi Congressional Districts. Regardless of the outcomes today, both the 1st and 3rd districts are likely to be won by Republicans in November.

In the 1st District, where Bush won with 62% in 2004, Southaven Mayor Greg Davis and former Tupelo Mayor Glen McCullough Jr. are battling for the Republican nomination. McCullough edged out Davis 39%-37% in the March 11 primary, and was later endorsed by Randy Russell, who finished third in the primary with 24%. State Rep. Steve Holland and Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers are vying for the Democratic nomination.

Roger Wicker, who represented the 1st District since 1994, was appointed at the end of 2007 to fill the Senate seat left vacant by Trent Lott. A special primary election will be held April 22, the winners of which will face off May 13 to fill the remainder of Wicker's House term.

In the 3rd District, where Bush won 65% in 2004, Rankin County GOP Chairman Gregg Harper and former state Sen. Charlie Ross face each other for the Republican nomination. In the seven-candidate primary field, Ross won 34%-28% over Harper. The district has been represented since 1996 by GOP Rep. Chip Pickering, who announced in August he would be stepping down at the end of his term.

UPDATE: An earlier version of this post incorrectly stated that Harper won 34%-28% over Ross.
