The Daily 2008

On this day in 1912 the largest luxury liner in the world, the RMS Titanic, goes down in the early morning hours, taking with her more than 1,500 passengers and crew. On to today's top stories:

"Barack Obama's Counterpunching Style" (Avi Zenilman and Ben Smith, The Politico) You can discover a lot about a candidate by how he responds to setbacks and gaffes. As reporters Zenilman and Smith note, Obama has a certain style when he's down: "Attack first, sort out the details later, if at all. No apology, no immediate regret, just a sharp counterattack."

"Pa. Voters Divided Over Obama Remarks" (Mark Scolforo, Associated Press) Take it with a grain of salt, but reporter Scolforo's interviews with Pennsylvanians offer an insight into what those voters whom Obama mentioned in his now infamous remarks actually do think.

"McCain Joins Fray on Obama" (Elisabeth Bumiller and Jeff Zeleny, New York Times) It's been interesting to watch when McCain decides to join in the Democratic firing circle. Sometimes, as with Jeremiah Wright, McCain holds back. Others, as with Obama's most recent comments, he dives in.

"McCain Economic Plan To Show a Mixed Approach" (Laura Meckler, Wall Street Journal) Obama has a point when he criticizes McCain for taking a few tries to get his economic outlook straight. Yesterday McCain seems to have settled on a "mixed bag" of free-market, government intervention proposals.

"Labor Wants Action on Jobs, China" (Timothy McNulty, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette) If you're wondering why Obama and Clinton harp on free-trade so much, with the latest target being China, it's because that's what Big Labor wants to hear.

"Bill Clinton Sidesteps Comments by Obama" (Mary Beth Schneider, Indianapolis Star) Perhaps still smarting from his own Bosnia tale, in which he absurdly tried to defend his wife's version, Bill Clinton refrained from taking a shot at Obama.

"Steelers Owner Dan Rooney Endorses Obama" (Associated Press) Despite the hits Obama has taken recently, we shouldn't underestimate Dan Rooney's endorsement in "Steelers Nation." Having lived in a few cities, the Daily 2008 is well aware that Steelers Nation is thriving.

"Levine: Obama a Guest at '04 Party for Tycoon" (Bob Secter, Chicago Tribune) Back to the Rezko trial: Obama was mentioned during testimony in the Tony Rezko trial for being at a party with Rezko and a shady Iraqi billionaire.

"The quiet force in McCain's campaign" (Jill Lawrence, USA Today) A look at the least-often discussed candidate spouse, Cindy McCain.
