The General Election and Public Financing

Just as John McCain is preparing to accept public financing for the general election, Barack Obama is doing the opposite. From Jake Tapper:
"We have created a parallel public financing system where the American people decide if they want to support a campaign they can get on the Internet and finance it, and they will have as much access and influence over the course and direction of our campaign that has traditionally been reserved for the wealthy and the powerful," Obama said at fundraiser in DC last night.
Which, if Obama's campaign fundraising has shown anything, is true. Except Obama was singing a different tune a year ago, when he pledged to accept public financing if his opponent did the same. Well, now it looks like McCain will do just that.
When you have the kind of cash Obama has (and will get), limiting yourself to just $84 million in taxpayer money doesn't have the same righteous ring to it, does it? At the same time, the campaign attack Obama will be handing to McCain probably won't be anything millions of more dollars can't blunt.
