Campaigns Refocus On Economy

The McCain campaign held a conference call with reporters this morning to discuss the differences between John McCain and Barack Obama's economic plans. Those representing the campaign -- McCain adviser Carly Fiorina, Harvard economist Martin Feldstein, Stanford economist John Taylor, and former Ebay CEO Meg Whitman -- said McCain's plan focuses on small business growth and energy independence.
As the McCain campaign talks economy, Obama is meeting today in Washington with his top economic advisers. They include billionaire Warren Buffett, former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker and former Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, as well as some union officials and Google's chairman and CEO Eric Schmidt. While Obama spent last week touring the Middle East and Europe with his focus clearly on foreign policy, the Illinois senator appears to be jumping right back into what many believe will be the top issue on voters' minds come November.
On the McCain call, the campaign took its shots at Obama's plan, but mostly focused on the core of McCain's own plan. It's "all about creating jobs," Whitman said of McCain's economic plan, and "most of the jobs come from small businesses."
Whitman said "everything is driven by oil" prices, including food and shipping costs, and emphasized the importance of a national energy policy, "because if we don't we're going to have a lot of trouble over time." Feldstein countered one argument regarding securing energy that may not be available for some time. "Something that's going to change the supply and demand five, 10, 20 years from now will have an effect on prices now," he said.
Fiorina said she hopes Obama "continues to consult with experts" on the economy. Because as of now, she said, he "would raise taxes and become isolationist and protectionist. Those are exactly the wrong moves in a difficult economic time."
