Fuzzy Math
Today's Washington Post has a preview of the Bush budget, in which the costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are projected at $145 billion in the coming year, drop to $50 billion in 2009 and $0 after that. Does OMB have a secret plan to end the war? Hope they tell the Pentagon about it.

I haven't seen any figures on how much it would cost us to keep the peace in Iraq long-term. Shell, Mobil, Exxon and the rest are going to expect that the U.S. military will be there on a permanent basis to protect their operations as they pilfer Iraqi oil.

Karen, you are talking about that fuzzy math of the reality based world.
Don't you know that Bush creates his own reality? If we drop our taxes to zero, the budget will pay for itself!

A new IIM report released in Feb 5th, 2007 contains troubling new information about the U.S. economic health status and risks. The study finds a different picture than the one advertised by the presidential speech on State of the Economy on Jan 31st, 2007. Detailes of Bush budget and economic risks are listed.
The complete text of the study is available online at http://iim-edu.org/u.s.economyrisks/

You commies really crack me up. Here we are, freeing slaves in Iraq and preventing a a repeat of the BOAT PEOPLE and all you can talk about is the budget. How dare you put a price on ending slavery. We need to FREE the iraqies and give them a safe home. Otherwise those Koranimals will be coming HERE to spread the teachings of their perverted moon god on the good people of the US. But all you DUmmies and Hitlary's Useful Idiots in the MSM want to talk about this budget crap. If FDR was alive he would kick you asses for being a bunch of wimps.
We must keep those dirty sandpeople in iraq where they belong.

Karen - You have discovered the Bush administration's secret plan for balancing the budget!
Posted by Terrapin | February 5, 2007 10:30 AM
It's the Enron school of accounting. Slightly refined since the Savings and Loan Scandal. Or did Cheney work a deal with the House of Saud for a bail out?

Watch that baloon payment, it's a doozy.

QUESTIONB
We must keep those dirty sandpeople in iraq where they belong.
Iraq had nothing to do with 911.
Hezbollah, on the other hand, has been able to cross the Mexican border.
While we're fighting them over there, they're already here.
In October of 2006, the House Subcommittee on Investigations of the Committee on Homeland Security Report on border violence issued a report:
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement investigations have revealed that aliens were smuggled from the Middle East to staging areas in Central and South America, before being smuggled illegally into the United States
Members of Hezbollah have already entered the United States across the Southwest border.
U.S. military and intelligence officials believe that Venezuela is emerging as a potential hub of terrorism in the Western Hemisphere. The Venezuelan government is issuing identity documents that could subsequently be used to obtain a U.S. visa and enter the country.
Since none of the 911 terrorists came from Iraq, we can stay bogged down there while the real threat (you know Islamists from countries not spelled I-R-A-Q) can attack a porous border. These guys are long term planners. We're distracted by a war we didn't have to fight.
Fightin' 'em over yonder so's we don't have to fight them here is a naive construct.
Not only are we been distracted by Iraq, your President has thrown a grenade into the Middle East and actually drawn together Islamist groups who were not allies before the war began. US troops will be trapped inside a very large shooting gallery of Sunnis and Shiites aiming weaponry at US troops in unison. They will also be shooting at each other, depending on the local circumastances. They will still be making plans to strike the US no matter what happeens in Iraq. We destroying military capability because of the distraction. Katrina proved this administration cannot deal with a large scale disaster.
Why do Consevatives hate America and want us to fail to truly defend precious American soil by wasting teasure (human and monetary) in Iraq?
Posted by rmrd0000 | February 5, 2007 11:11 AM
Wait, wait, I finally got it. Iraq is the operative here. How much was budgeted for Iran? Snow-job is already working on shifting the chorus from 'Over There' to a 'Wing and a Prayer'.
Posted by linda | February 5, 2007 11:48 AM
I would remind Joe Klein the guy who began the WoT was Mohammed Atta.
The Middle East is the center of international terrorism. To say Saddam had nothing to do with terrorism is like saying Adolf Hitler had nothing to do with communism.
Yep. That's right in theory. On the ground, everyone gets with everyone as long as needed.
Chavez is now linked with Amadinjead. Is Chavez muslim ? Has shia Iran an ideological tie with Venezuela ? Of course no.
But they are allies.
Saddam ordered jihad in 98, built several mosques, organized islamic conferences, added a Koran quote on the flag... and the American people still believe he was "secular". It would be laughable if it were not so grave.
Posted by drzz | February 5, 2007 12:07 PM
Joe Klein is great : the vote is not against the troops, it is against the president.
HE JOE ! Did you forget that America is at war, that America cannot lose in Iraq if she doesn't want to lauch a large scale, third Iraq war in the decade to come ?
Did you forget that your stupid leftie propaganda are killing American soldiers over there ?
Joe, you dishonor your job of journalist. I hope the "Klein" were not fleeing jews during WWII who wanted the US not to withdraw from Europe in the middle of a war.
AGAIN : Roosevelt would be ashamed of the present Democratic Party. Really, you are dishonoring your party, your country and your dignity alike.

Horay! drzz, Bin Laden's favorite Western supporter, is here to spread his pro-terrorism lies. Yes Mr drzz, we needed to attack Saddam just as your hero Bin Laden wanted us to do. And now, we must keep our soldiers in Iraq so your hero Bin Laden can regroup in Afghanistan.

It will be funded primarily by Time-Turner Broadcasting, from the massive proceeds of the thousands of civil suits about to be launched throughout the nation for Ted's Cartoon Clown vandals shutting down commerce for 12 hours last week.
Interest alone on these funds are expected to balance the U.S. budget well into the 22nd century.

Priceless!

Hey Drzz,
Do you think I'm happy about the fact you here trying to help Bin Laden destroy the US? Because of Bin Laden supporters like yourself, we are stuck in Iraq while AQ and the Taliban are rebuilding Afghanistan and Pakistan. But you like that so much you are doing everything you can to help AQ and Bin Laden grow stronger.

drzz: China wants oil, natural gas and some minerals in Africa. America the great consumer nation supports China while China supports both Amadinejad and Chevez (the leftest coalition in Latin America) and is dealing in Africa. America refuses to deal with energy independence and thus supports the 'evils'. Meantime, India has needs. We are giving more Nukes to India while Iran uses India to refine its oil and Hu is back dooring the US in India. In the meantime Coke, H, and meth flow freely to meet the demand in EU and the USA. So, much for the Just Say NO War on Drugs and cutting off funding-freezing bank accounts to the 'evils'. Israel uses US supplied cluster bombs and Jordan wants Nukes because of its negative oil position. All the while the US is selling hi-tech to China and the information highway to India. Russia is threatening EU with natural gas cut-off and selling munitions while regrowing the KBG. Human trafficking abounds. ....

Dear QUESTION HILLARY:
I agree with you 100% on the gay issue. Let's you and I work together to defend the sanctity of marriage between a man and a woman and stop the faggotization of America. I know a motel in Mesa where we can meet to discuss further plans. Can you bring the crystal meth? (Absolutely no tofu, though!!)

In the beginning of this week, Hillary Clinton promised to her supporters that she would end the war in Iraq if she's elected.
Beside the fact Hillary is going to the far left - good news for every conservative - the question remains : do the US have any interests in leaving Iraq now ?
The Somalia retreat in 1993 let islamists in power in the region, then tribal chiefs, then again Al-Quaeda
and finnally the US had to get back in 2006 in order to destroy the new heaven of terrorism in Eastern Africa.
An islamic Somalia would have strengthened the islamic forces in the rest of Africa (Sudan, Morocco, Algeria) and offerred several millions people to the global islamic jihad.
We are facing the same situation now. We are near a global clash of civilization. Bin Laden is trying to weaken the US in the Middle East in order to strenghten the radical islamists in Lebanon, in Egypt, in Saudi Arabiam, in Palestine and Pakistan.
A retreat of Iraq would not only get the US troops out of Iraq but will hurry up their COME BACK, or the victory in the WoT will be gravely at stake with millions of muslims unable to stand up against the jihadists. Like the White House said : there is no victory in the War on Terror without a victory in Iraq.
It is like if Roosevelt had lauched a preemptive war against the Nazis to Praha's rescue in 1938, and the US Senate would have been against. Then, Roosevelt would have faced two choices : a) retreat, but to be sure to come back later and face more casualties. b) to stand in his boots on, to ignore an increasingly unhappy population, but later to be confident of having saved thousands of American lives.
Finnally, the stupid Hillary Clinton and Dems not only advocate a defeat in Iraq and nnounce new attacks on the US soil.
Unvoluntarily they prepare the country for new US counter-attacks in the Middle East with more and more troops, and more and more blood in a global clash of civilization.
By advocating the end of the war in Iraq, they are leading the country to plenty others.
The reconquest of Iraq for example.
"BAD IDEAS ALWAYS LEAD TO BLOOD. BUT THAT'S THE OTHER'S BLOOD. THAT IS WHY OUR THINKERS ARE SO COOL TO SAY THE MOST STUPID THINGS". Albert Camus

QUESTION HILLARY:
I see you pulled the smut from your website. Normally, I'd say this helps you argue from a more "moral" standpoint. But frankly, you're entirely off the deepend and nothing is going to help you.

"What's your immigration status, pal?"
European.

You have to appreciate what drzz and QH have done here. They have taken the conversation from the issue at hand (Bush's proposed budget) and dragged it into trivial name calling. People here blame the media for getting consumed by this stuff, yet here we are doing the same thing. It's why the GOP will continue to spout bogus claims and radical statements: because it distracts everyone.
There is no point in debating with those who have a nefarious agenda.
Please, let's get back to our regularly scheduled, issue based, grounded-in-fact debate.

So your both an illegal AND a Bin Laden supporter? I thought we had laws against people like you. Boy, Bush administration is really dropping the ball. But that's nothing new.
Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2007 1:15 PM
Anonymous, you are disgusting. Not illegal, by the way.
Posted by Anonymous | February 5, 2007 1:17 PM
Zippy : why would a conservative comment a Democrat's comment about the budget ?
It is a budget of war, and Dems feel they are not at war.
You quickly forgot 9/11.
Posted by drzz | February 5, 2007 1:21 PM
Come on, you are suprised by this? According to Conservatives, cause of all bad things in Iraq are those Dirty Hippies. If the Hippies would just clap harder and wish for more ponies, then Iraq would fix itself. Perhaps the Bush administration figures it can convince everyone to clap harder over the next few years?
I know I'm already wishing for a pony.

Apparently 0 in 2010, when, of course the temporary tax cuts expire.

drzz: Claiming Clinton was a military genius would be dwelling in the same state of denial as those who think the Great Decider has made America safer. But then again we don't know the consequences of the roads not taken.
We've been in a state of BRAC (down-sizing the US military) since 88 pushing Star Wars using electronics to replace human intelligence. The discussions of the Population Bomb and its relationship to finite and ever diminishing natural resources goes back even further.
No need to discuss the history of conflicts between religions. Escalating vendettas are not the answer. The budget and the ledgers just never seem to balance. But it would certainly help if we had better 'horse traders' with 'common sense' in charge.
