Obama on the Run
Cedar Rapids--I only have a few minutes to post here, but Obama has just completed his first real campaign event, a town meeting in a high school gymnasium. Large audience, natch...But really striking for these reasons:
--very low key and serious. No hokey intro music. No stump speech. Just Q & A. "The country's in a serious, sober mood right now," he said, from the jump.
--Courageously low level of pandering. Third question from the audience was a guy from Sensibile Priorities, a group that favors reducing the Pentagon budget, who asked if Obama would lower the Pentagon budget. Obama said the war had left the military depleted, in need of more soldiers and equipment and so, "You'll probably see an initial bump in military spending in an Obama administration," although he'd certainly look at obsolete, cold war era weapons systems. (Of course, he'd already said that he wanted all the combat brigades out of Iraq by March 2008, which drew sustained applause.)
The inevitable anti-No-Child-Left-Behind question from a teachers union member brought a balanced, but tough response from Obama--more $$ for teachers, yes, but more responsibility from teachers, too. "My sister is a teacher," he said, "and she tells me that you go into any school and everyone [on the faculty] knows which teachers are good and which are not so good." I remember wanting to jump out of my skin when Howard Dean answered similar questions in 2004, pandering wildly to the teachers unions, promising the moon and refusing to say ask anything of them.
--Most striking thing is how restrained the whole operation is, and was, this morning in Springfield. Yeah, he's charismatic as hell--but he's pointedly not using blowaway, red-meat rhetoric. He seems to understand the arc of a campaign: you build slowly... there will be time to blow off the roof down the road. I'm not sure how the audience felt about that. The people I spoke with afterwards liked him a lot, but weren't swooning. (I got the sense that they were hoping to fall in love). That may or may not be a good thing too...but this seems to be a wildly responsible Presidential campaign, one that respects the audience. And that is a very good thing, indeed.
I may have more to say about this tomorrow and Monday, and certainly in the elegant dead tree edition of Time Magazine this week.

"but this seems to be a wildly responsible Presidential campaign,"
I am not ready to embrace a presidential campaign Joe Klein and the rest of the DC media have declared "responsible" or God forbid "morally serious". It's usually a code word describing a candidate soothing (non threatening) to the Broderland audience.

"It's time to admit that no amount of American lives can resolve the political disagreement that lies at the heart of someone else's civil war," Obama said.
Has he consulted with the Hutus, and Koreans, and Germans, and Haitians, and Afghans on that?

Well said.

To "Question Hillary" - what exactly did America resolve in Korea, and when did we ever meddle in a German civil war?

"Its time to admit that no amount of American lives can resolve the political disagreement that lies at the heart of someone else's civil war."
Exactly.
By the way, exactly who did Bush and Cheney consult with before launching us into the gigantic, multi-faceted mess in Iraq, other than their sheep-like flock of yes men?

Americans finally have a candidate who is not afraid to call a spade a spade. Obama brings a fresh perspective because he has no baggage and unlike Hilary, he does not have to re-invent himself in order to get elected.
I hope Americans have the courage to look beyond a candidate's race and colour when making their choice.

Joe - re: The Elements of Vile.
"The trouble is, obnoxious doesn't win you many friends or elections." I guess this is only true for Democrats because it seems to work wonders for the GOP.
Such a promising start to your post as you point out that, yes, conservative bloggers are rude, and, golly, there seems to be some rudeness on the radio lately. But then all of that wind-up was apparently just to scold those of us on the left for whatever rudeness we may have posted. Why do you not help us by pointing out that there is only an outrage over the language that a blogger uses if that blogger is liberal? Why do you not fight for us against the obvious double standard for behavior between the left and the right? Instead you perpetuate that double standard by tacitly agreeing with the criticisms against Edwards' bloggers.
Why was Rush Limbaugh able to become a paid advisor to Bush/Cheney '04 yet there was no media storm of protest and Bush was never forced to release a statement disavowing even a single thing Limbaugh said? Why is there still no mainstream media recognition that the Right Wing Noise Machine/Echo Chamber even exists???
Why don't you get it, Joe? Whatever it is that you think you are grooming us to be is not going to help us or you or this nation. You keep wanting us to be polite and to soldier on and that may work for a campaign but we are involved in something much longer termed than that. Work with us, Joe. We need every strong back we can get - we don't need somebody too shy to raise their voice while being screamed at by the opposition.

I was at the announcement in Springfield this morning, and completely disagree with the lack of "swooning" comment. Perhaps frozen into a zombie-like state afterwards, but there was a lot of swooning around my middle-of-the-crowd on the left hand side view. We, all strangers, were all talking and smiling and sharing our enthusiasm and traffic troubles with each other. Granted, cheering through a double-wrapped scarf and clapping in thick gloves isn't ideal...

Joe, here's an example of what is vile and of your beloved bipartisanship:
Fourteen years ago -- count'em, 14 -- the Clintons made an attempt to have the country focus on and solve the health care problem. One person -- Bill Kristol -- more than any other is responsible for that failure. Kristol proffered and convinced the Republicans that enacting ANY health plan (even an objectively perfect plan) would be bad for the GOP. He succeeded and the country suffered.
But that's not what is vile.
You calling Kristol "esteemed" while chastising potty-mouthed bloggers for lacking bipartisanship is vile. Time hiring him to be a columnist is vile.
You thinking you're the arbiter of what's vile in vile.
And I haven't even mentioned Kristol and Iraq.
Esteemed. Vile.

Joe - Please pass this on to Karen:
"White House Press Secretary Tony Snow has sided with Pelosi. But GOP insiders say the issue has a lot to do with Pelosi's work-week requirements, which many legislators consider a PR stunt that imposes a real burden on them getting home to be with their families and constituents."
So now we find out that the GOP smear of the Majority Leader was simply payback for demanding a five-day work week. How conservative of them.
Now you may say, "But the media worked the way it should and got the truth out eventually."
In this case, Eventually = 10 Days.
That is ten days of you and the press running headlines of AirPelosi; ten days of Lou Dobbs howling at the hypocrisy and elitism of the Democrats. Ten days of...well you get the point. They have successfully inserted a lie into the political discourse and the media abetted them.
Sure, the truth got out and some of the record will be corrected. But if you were to go into the public spaces outside of Washington then you would find that many, many people didn't quite catch the correction. They bought the smears. They think Pelosi is just an elitist, liberal hypocrit. They think that Obama attended a terrorist training school in a foreign country. They think that the critics of Edwards' bloggers are saintly Catholics instead of the pandering, bigotted anti-semites that they have shown themselves to be (talkin' bout Bill Donahue here).
What they don't realize is that the GOP is able to play the music of outrage with a virtuosity unseen since the ancient masters and using the media as a cowed orchestra. You need to help them realize this. Why don't you dissect these smears out in the open? Name the people who started them and ruin their careers for a change? This isn't a partisan issue - it is a question of seeking truth and communicating that truth to as many people as possible. It is a matter of defeating the liars.

"Why is there still no mainstream media recognition that the Right Wing Noise Machine/Echo Chamber even exists???"
Because to admit it they would have to admit their own complicity in amplifying the lies that come out of the Right Wing Noise Machine.
Another reason; they don't want to be targeted by the Right Wing Noise Machine. They don't want to be demonized by Rush/O'Liely/Hannity 24/7.
Posted by DonB | February 10, 2007 10:16 PM
Barrack doesn't carry the baggage & scars of having fought the often violent Civil Rights battles or the youthful indescretions of the 60's warriors, even though those tactics were appropriate at their time for the issues being fought.
Posted by sonny c. | February 10, 2007 10:37 PM
DonB - I think you are on to something. I can't speak for Joe (he should really do that himself), but I imagine that admitting that the media has become organized in the way that the RightWing Noise Machine implies would be to admit, well, the same thing that the Libby trial has been exposing. And now they can all run around being shocked (shocked!) that the administration would do something like that to such a noble profession.
It is a strange sensation to be living in this current time-warp as the mainstream media catches up to what the progressive blogosphere has been able to piece together years ago. I think the current year in MSM-time is 2004 - meaning that they now all realize that the war was predicated on faulty intelligence, by people who knew it was faulty, that we are in a civil war, that it won't take another god-dammed (mercy! forgive me!) six months for things to calm down, that it is not unpatriotic to debate and discuss during a time of war, and that Cheney is very likely mentally unstable (OK, we are not quite there with that last one).
So what else has the MSM finally caught up on? I am sure there is more. Perhaps I have under- or over-estimated MSM-time. Maybe we can pinpoint the month in which they are currently living and then point them to a string of articles that would help them catch up even faster.
Posted by Terrapin | February 10, 2007 10:53 PM
Don B is on. Personal opinion: Cheney is mentally unstable and for all the Decider's claims, I think he is bleeding while treading in shark infested waters.
MSM has to see what is happening, please. Gates at NATO and the Munich Conference with the on-going ME and N Korea situations with Africa and S. America as footnotes, no one can deny that the World is turning to other solutions and problem solvers. Gates was not the answer anymore than Rice and Gonzales and Chertoff were the answer.
Hearing after hearing, ignoring the Libby trial meanderings, is cracking the veneer. Been through Nixon and Clinton and how the nation was effected. But, I can see only one solution and that is impeaching Cheney now. Get Cheney out of there and Bush has to respond to public opinion to save his ass. You'd think that a whole bunch of GOP senators would wake up and smell the coffee. That they would realize that the power has shifted and that instead of carrying the water they need to save the party and their own seats.
It is really time to get over word games, 'vile', and the noise machine, because these are serious times and we have clueless, noise makers playing with live ammo.

Pardon the Interruption
Jay Carney has been absent from school because he's been busy
From radaronline.com from 02/09/2007
Time's Up for Mag's DC Bureau
It's a nervous day in Time's Washington bureau, where staffers were given until 1:30 p.m. to volunteer for buyout packages rather than risk being laid off. The bureau was ordered by corporate parent, Time Inc., which announced a company-wide workforce reduction of 289 last month, to eliminate four jobs. Correspondents Tim Burger and Doug Waller both agreed to take the buyouts, but as of this morning two more volunteers were still needed.
"I know this has been a difficult process and a long one," wrote bureau chief Jay Carney in an e-mail to his staff earlier today. "In the interest of not extending the uncertainty any longer than necessary, I ask that if anyone is still considering whether or not to volunteer, they tell me now."
Asked about the cuts, a Time Inc. spokeswoman says, "We're not going to comment on specific employees, departments, or areas. I can tell you that Time is continuing to seek 31 [magazine-wide] volunteers. Some employees have come forward, others are weighing their options, so the process continues."

"...and there it is again, a swipe at well-known "Bad Democrat" Howard Dean,"
They will never forgive Howard Dean for being right about Iraq.
The corporate media tagged Howard Dean as Dirty Fucking Hippy who could not be trusted with national security. Not like "responsible" and "morally serious" St John McCain and Holy Joe Lieberman, two Beltway media darlings.
Howard Dean has been vindicated and Joe Klein types hate him even more for being proven right.

Joe, I see your "esteemed" former colleague Mike Allen has, in the tradition of today's hardest working "professional journalists," done the hard "reporting" work of rewording the opposition research funnelled to him about Obama. This is quite coup for Allen -- these days getting the handout first is what constitutes a "scoop" for the indefatigable elite Washington press corp.
Anyway Joe, there's been quite a buzz here on the Internets about Allen's "reporting" in this piece and I was wondering you might want to weigh in. What do you think Joe? Would you like to defend Allen?
Here's Allen's piece:
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0207/2694.html
Here's one critique:
http://delong.typepad.com/sdj/2007/02/special_super_j.html
Matthew Yglesias has another critique (you'll have to find it yourself -- too many links is evidently a no-no in the comments here at Swampland).
In particular I'd ask you to consider these questions:
1) Allen would like us to believe that he was so curious as to wonder about Obama's Arabic and Swahili versions of "Barack" and their meanings and yet was simultaneously so uncurious as to not spend the few minutes it would take to get the answer. Does that seem plausible to you?
2) Isn't the journalist endeavor to *answer* questions, not simply pose them? Doesn't Allen fail that basic test here?
3) What is more vile? A lazy, stenographic "reporter" regurgitating his "scoop" leak without the slightest bit of journalistic ethos or a dirty hippie blogger using strident language and the occasional foul word?
Posted by Steve in Sacto | February 11, 2007 3:15 AM
Joe,
It's oxymoronic and ridiculous to say Obama's sounds like a "wildly responsible" campaign, especially when you're trying to draw a contrast between the "wild" (Dean) and the "responsible" (Obama). Aside from the fact that it's idiotic to divide the whole political world into those categories, it's also idiotic to configure a "sensible" Democrat against a "wild" Democrat, especially after a post in which you admit that there is truth to the claim that the Right has a monopoly on vitriol.
It's obvious you're trying to set Obama up as the anti-Dean:
Obama: "low key"; "serious"; "balanced but tough"; "restrained"; "wildly responsible" (?!?!); "respects the audience"
Dean: "pandering wildly"
If you want to talk about "pandering wildly," how about mentioning the fact that the Bush administration has screened its audiences and demanded loyalty oaths at least since the 2004 campaign?
Posted by Dave | February 11, 2007 3:48 AM
The rabid, knee-jerk lib jumping on the Obama bandwagon (moped, actually) IS further proof that the media sycophant loon left will do anything to GET BUSH - no matter the actual consequences for the nation and the rest of the free world, and those yearning to be free.
Question for Klein: Name one lawyer, anywhere, anytime, that actually freed even one slave. Lincoln, you say? Grant, Sherman, and Sheridan would be the correct answer, as more real deal news for TV Chuck Schooooooooooooooomer's Babs & Bunky Barrister domesticated DC dolt voting class.
What a legacy.

I attended the Obama session in Cedar Rapids on Sat. 2/10/07 and I came away with a very positive impression. I agree with Joe that most people who attended were conditioned by previous large scale polical events to expect a soaring stump speech. But Obama "zigged" where most politicans would have "zagged"... most of us in the audience had previously heard the incredible oratory of the 2004 National Convention and another inspiring speech at the annual Harkin Steak Fry (carried on CSPAN). On Saturday (whether we recognized it or not, we needed to begin hearing details of Obama's positions on a wide range of issues...first to make sure he HAD details and secondly, to see if the responses made sense and felt solid. Obama already had the hearts of the 2,200 people in that gym BEFORE the event (though not necessarily their caucus support yet)- by talking issues, rather than giving another inspiring, but thematic speech, he also won the minds and respect of the vast majority of the crowd (though stil not caucus commitment...we usually offer that later in the process). I was impressed that he wasn't taking PAC money, so last night I donated $25 on-line, to help keep his operation rolling and his voice heard. In my mind, Obama made a great start by filling in some gaps regarding what we knew about him (I didn't know that he'd worked for 3 years as a community organizer after college). He took several steps forward.

Posted by norman ravitch | February 11, 2007 8:05 AM
All kidding aside, Obama is a very likable person.
That does not mean he has any business selling worn-out isolationist leftist pablum as the next American foreign policy.
Iraq was no less a security risk to our nation than say Yugoslavia, more so in fact based on Saddam's history.
No war has ever been perfect (note that allied troops are STILL in the Balkans, over 10 years into that fray - and when they depart later this year all hell will likely break loose lacking troops on the ground to keep the tribes separated).
Obama's cheerfulness in the face of media stupidity and DNC hypocrisy is to be commended, and I personally like the guy.
I also like Captain Kangaroo.
That does not mean either one of them should be POTUS.
Posted by QUESTION HILLARY | February 11, 2007 8:10 AM
Joe:
Read this and saw you on Chris Matthews Show. Given CM's well known dislike (polite word) for HRC I told myself we will see a good gabfest on Obama the Positive. Sure enough it happened: Nora gave us her usual braying laugh and fatuous comments; the others were pro-Obama when pushed.
So begins the MSM selling of Obama. I only wish Obama knows that this crowd can turn on him on a dime if he doesn't play according to their script. Replay of GWB in 1999. No doubt Obama is the better man but it is a little too early to be cheerleading.
The pundits are getting dizzy with power again!
Posted by Alan | February 11, 2007 8:24 AM
"The pundits are getting dizzy with power again!"
So what else IS news?
I actually feel sorry for Obama.
Not just for his naivety, but for his impending un-raveling by the Hillary-ized yellow lapdog DNC drone press corps.
Let the flames begin!
Posted by QUESTION HILLARY | February 11, 2007 8:47 AM
linda,
Couldn't agree more with your thoughts on Cheney.
Is there any doubt he was behind the whole Valerie Plame affair, that he instructed the deletion of critical facts on the global warming reports for his own and other's oil interests, and that he was cherry-picking the intelligence and squelching anything that questioned the invasion, all the while prodding Dubya along towards invading Iraq? And that's just for starters. Cheney should be investigated, indicted, and incarcerated. Wishful thinking.
I can't help but think back to the 2004 campaign, when after Kerry's offhand remark about the Cheney's gay daughter, Lynn Cheney's vindictive response, "John Kerry is not a good man." What a joke! How would she describe her husband? With a plethora of lies, and twisted half-truths soaked in denial, I'm sure.
Posted by Joseph | February 11, 2007 10:37 AM
BTW, Having read Joe's work in Time magazine over the years and more recently at Time.com, I must say I can't fault Joe for occasionally looking at the other side of an issue.
I've always enjoyed his interesting, articulate viewpoints on politics, and I feel he more often than not, and rightfully so, comes down on the left side of the debate.
In fact, I sometimes print copies of Joe's columns and hand them out to my Democratic friends at work who share the same feeling about politics that I do, just because I think Joe says it so well.
Keep up the good work Joe.

No war is perfect? - Thanks for that insightful comment.
Republicans are like retarded monkeys. They throw feces around the room, and then wonder aloud, "What's that smell?"
Lets let Bush stay in office forever, so he can completely and utterly run the country into the ground.

Hopefully this presidential race won't be based on race, sex, or charisma but on the candidate's knowledge, ethics, and experience. Maybe that is why Obama is pursuing a low key campaign because he lacks knowledge and experience.
Also rights should be for everybody in America, not just for heterosexuals because love conquers all. Furthermore, women should have the right to choose. Our jails are over flowing with unwanted kids already.
Before America goes to war, it needs to decide upfront how it plans to exit. What criteria must be meet before we wage war. America cannot be the worlds' police force.

Chris CR: did a good job of explaining the usual IA of 'wait and see'--'hey are you listening to me' attitude of potential caucus goers.
After watching Terry McA on Timmy last night, I wonder about the whole process. Terry says that the nomination will be determined by Feb. 08 so that the $1B can be spent by THE candidate. Obviously, the DEMs have tried to undermine the primary schedule, letting the few decide the nominee. Two edge sword here, it does free up the Senators to get some work done (yuk, yuk) but it settles the candidate before the 'times can dictate' the issues.
Oh, TA supports Hillary and yes has a new book.
