Pandagate Fallout Continues
Fidelis ("a Catholic-based advocacy organization established to help elect pro-life, pro-family and pro-religious liberty candidates to public office") has announced that they will be using the resignations of Edwards' bloggers (the second as of today) as a springboard for a series of ads, designed to draw attention this pressing issue:
Cella said: “This whole episode calls into question whether Edwards has the decisiveness and moral courage to lead our country.”
If having the "moral courage" to fire intemperate bloggers is the new Presidential litmus test, I suggest Obama go on a hiring spree over at Fleshbot.
That this blogger brouhaha has morphed into some resembling an actual news story (covered by the New York Times, ads, press releases) still kind of shocks me. While this narrative could be twisted to serve as evidence of the blogosphere's growing power, it's really a testament to the power of rage as a communications strategy (something bloggers know a thing or two about). Bill Donohue is a paranoid loon who would be right at home under a tin-foil miter -- now the Edwards campaign has a black eye that is enormously disproportionate to the error it made: I'd say their mistake wasn't hiring Marcotte so much as it was not doing the due diligence that either would have weighed against her employment or (having hired her with full knowledge of her past writings) at least would have prepared them for the outcry that was to come.
Speaking of due diligence, will news organizations in the future please look up some of the incendiary things Donohue has said in the past before quoting him about bigotry? At the very least, they should put his "anti-Catholic" slur in context. He's used the term so much (against such noted enemies of faith as Bill O'Reilly and Ann Landers) that at this point, it's what he shouts during any moment of ecstasy, religious or otherwise.

Too bad no one in the MSM can actually print the e-mail attacks that the Rabble (Donohue-Faux, et. al.) generated. Where is the real CATHOLIC CHURCH with a strong moral statement denouncing this whole mess?
We want the Muslims to step up and issue Fatwas against the Jihadists, but the CC doesn't stand up and be counted. It would seem that a Papal Bull much stronger and more erudite than the response to sexually predatory clergy is long overdue on many issues, and this is one of them.

Well said. We missed your wit and welcome you back!
Posted by Todd and in Charge | February 14, 2007 2:06 PM
The Catholic Church is denigrated in a hateful, vile way by these two bloggers and the Church has to step up and denounce this whole mess? Why, Linda?
And, Ana, when Mr. Donohue is hired by a Republican candidate to work on his presidential campaign then we can all quote some of Donahue's past rhetoric.
Posted by Carol Royce | February 14, 2007 2:22 PM
Donahue is obviously a Republican Hack. He reserves his attacks for Liberals and if a Republican does the same thing as a Liberal he defends him. The facts are very clear on this.
I agree that for the good of the Catholic Church and the good name of Christianity the Church ought to step forward and make it very clear that the anti-Semite Donahue does not speak for them, if in fact that is what they believe.

Last night O'Reilly asked the director of the Young Democrats of America, Jane Fleming, if she would have fired the bloggers. She said no. He then asked if the bloggers had written derogatory remarks against blacks, would she have fired them and she replied, "Yes." He asked if they had written hateful things against gays, would she have fired them and she told him to stop it; she said he can't keep naming different minority groups; she knows what he is trying to do. I knew what he was trying to do, too: Show her up for the hypocritical liberal that she is and it worked. Anti-Catholicism is the anti-Semitism of the left.

CR: If I have to explain it, you wouldn't get it.
Also, 'the Military' does not nor should it speak in one voice on political matters, it is made up of individuals. They may have your ass, win your heart and teach you to march in cadence, but like America the Military is made up of people from a cross section of this nation. In fact, I think that they are expected to use their minds and make decisions. Maybe someone who knows the details like Soldier-Lawyer-American can weigh in on this.
Posted by linda | February 14, 2007 2:36 PM
"Anti-Catholicism is the anti-Semitism of the left."
I thought we were supposed to be anti-Semites not anti-Catholic. I find it hard to keep up with all the things we hate, according to the lily white and pure Republicans, who love everyone.

CR: Say, what brand does O'Rilemup and Donohue drink? A little Hate Pate on quackers served by crusaders in white.
Posted by linda | February 14, 2007 2:45 PM
As far as the best practices for democracy go, the military, strictly speaking, should not speak about political matters period. The military, in its best form, is a tool for statecraft and the defense of our nation. Don't mistake my words, the men and women bravely serving in the military are doing so heroically. In doing so, though, they must give up their right to have and share opinions, especially officers, especially to avoid a combative, non-responsive relationship between the officer corps and the civilian leadership.

Cella said: “This whole episode calls into question whether Edwards has the decisiveness and moral courage to lead our country.”
****
And that was what it was all about!
EDWARDS was damned if he did and damned if he didn't. There is NO WINNING with these folks.
Would that DONOHUE and people like him had focused as much attention on our coke-head DECIDER before the SCOTUS appointed him. Maybe had they truly been interested in the "best candidate" way back then, instead of foisting their radical ideology on us, perhaps they might have done something honorable and worthy by
helping to eliminate GWB way back in 1999 as UNFIT TO LEAD.
This whole thing with the bloggers was a "witch hunt"! DONOHUE supposed bragged to Tucker CARLSON that he was instrumental in getting two of KERRY's bloggers fired in 2004.
IT IS ALL ABOUT HOW MUCH RACKET THEY CAN STIR
TO GET THEIR WAY!
My GOPer rag of a newspaper has an editorial and an article today about this. The editorial makes NO MENTION OF DONOHUE and the part he played. The long article has a single paragraph mentioning McCAIN's blogger, but the whole emphasis is on how horrible these two female bloggers are because they use such unacceptable language and how EDWARDS just didn't handle it "properly."
THERE WAS NOT ONE WORD ABOUT the wretched e-mails the bloggers had received.

If the bloggers hate written hateful things about blacks and Al Sharpton made a fuss about it, would you then dredge up the anti-Semitic things Sharpton has said in the past? Of course not. So why do it with Donohue?
Posted by Carol Royce | February 14, 2007 3:16 PM
CR: 4 1/2 hours until O'Rilemup is on and you can go to the well of all things baffle 'em with BS.
Posted by linda | February 14, 2007 3:24 PM
CR, the point is that Donohue presents himself as if he's campaigning against bigotry, when in fact he is a bigot. Further, his crusade inspired individuals who claim to be Christians to act in a very, very un-Christian way.
Posted by pva | February 14, 2007 3:26 PM
"That this blogger brouhaha has morphed into some resembling an actual news story (covered by the New York Times, ads, press releases) still kind of shocks me."
That it shocks you shocks me. The press loves nothing more than an incendiary accusation, and works hard to turn a blind eye to actual facts that would undercut an interesting scandal narrative.
I refer you to the Nancy Pelosi flap/smear for another recent expample.
Take a step back from the trees and see the forest. The press loves to create and perpetuate silly stories -- it makes their job more interesting.

From the CNN article:
"Donohue had promised a nationwide public relations campaign in newspapers, magazines and Catholic publications in an effort to rid the Edwards campaign of the two bloggers. The Catholic League counts 350,000 members."
That is quite an expensive media blitz to be subsidized by just 350,000 members. I wonder where he gets his funding from.
Posted by Terrapin | February 14, 2007 3:35 PM
Carol,
People are Catholic because of what they believe.
With your insane analogy, you are suggesting that people are black because they believe they are black.
Conclusion: you are in fact Stephen Colbert.
Well played, sir!
Posted by zota | February 14, 2007 3:37 PM
As a Catholic what I see as anti Catholic bias is giving a microphone to someone like Donohoe.
He doesn't speak for, nor represent, the church.
But the media love the weirdos.
Posted by Paul, no not that one | February 14, 2007 3:38 PM
Carol - You need to give it up; the analogy falls flat.
It is not because the Catholic Church is a minority that I defend the bloggers - it is because the Catholic Church is an extremely wealthy, politically active, multinational organization that seeks to limit the rights and liberties of over the half the world's population (ie: women).
If you can see that same type of threat from blacks and gays then you must be...well...I guess that makes you a Republican now that I think about it. Thank you Carol. This actually explains a great deal.

Did O'Liely happen to discuss the anti-Semitic comments by McCAIN's hired blogger? Was that in any way mentioned?
What about DONOHUE's willingness to forgive Mel GIBSON's anti-Semitic comments? Shouldn't Mel have been castigated severely and chased out of America--or--at a minimum be boycotted on his next movie for such vile comments?
Regarding your final statement above: You have a very large brush stroke, it seems.
Why don't you give us a list of horrible things you think "the left" is guilty of, so we can print out and hang on our refrigerators as a daily reminder of things we old lefties need to diligently work on for self improvement?
Posted by ama | February 14, 2007 4:23 PM
My point is that the 'Donohues' don't really have a right to the pulpit of the Catholic Church unless the Catholic Church, by silence gives them license to use the right of public domain to adopt the name 'Catholic' League and assume use of that pulpit without challenge. The MSM goes along for the sake of getting the story or advancing a dogma.
The Vatican, a sovereign entity, has responded to such things as the Warsaw Archdiocese Spy Scandal and rethinking the use of condoms as a medical intervention to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS. I think that the 'Donohues' deserve to be challenged.
The term Christianist has come into play to try to separate and define the Donohue types.
Posted by linda | February 14, 2007 4:24 PM
So I guess that's it: Because of Bill Donahue and the wealth of the Catholic Church, bloggers or anyone else can spew anti-Catholic hate and get away with it. And get hired by a Democratic presidential candidate. And get defended on this liberal site.
You seem to think that Donahue was the ONLY person upset by this. He wasn't. Bush-basher Andrew Sullivan and liberal Ezra Klein thought Edwards showed poor judgement.
Posted by Carol Royce | February 14, 2007 4:38 PM
Amanda Marcotte's only mistake was the use of vulgarity in one long post criticizing deceptive Catholic teaching on contraception. That's a far cry from the anti-semitic ravings we've seen from Donohue.
I still haven't figured out what Shakespeare's Sister's great crime was supposed to have been. She referred to some of Bush's follower's as "Christofascists", but is that any worse than the epithets regularly hurled by the radical right themselves? "Feminazis" anyone?
So the bloggers are forced to retreat because they used some bad words, and the people who forced them out with threats of death and images of rape will pat each other on the back and slide back under their rocks, ignored by the MSM.
Welcome to America, land of the feeble, home of the cowards. Makes me sick.
Posted by A Hermit | February 14, 2007 4:49 PM
"bloggers or anyone else can spew anti-Catholic hate and get away with it."
You also suggest that black people could convert to being another race. And aside from getting called insane, you get away with it.
What a country!

"Bush-basher Andrew Sullivan"
That's rich. I guess if you complain that Bush isn't conservative enough that means you are a Bush basher.
Carol - I had no idea that Republicans were so thin-skinned. I thought you Republicans were tough. I thought you were the party of ideas that was not afraid to take the debate into hot areas. You are proving that wrong.
It is not about Bill Donahue - it is that he is a hypocritcal bigot himself that ought to cancel out his charges. And it is not simply the wealth of the Catholic Church - it is that they use their wealth and their considerable power to push forth a societal structure that severely limits the liberties of millions of people. I thought conservatives got all upset about the curtailment of liberties but I guess you don't mind.
If you are unable to see that these bloggers engaged in rhetorical hyperbole in order to make a point about the oppression of women espoused by conservatives in the Catholic Church then I guess you don't mind the oppression of women. Is that how we are going to play this debating game thing?
And this is the final thing that irritates me about the conservative ideologues of the world - they propagate the lie that liberals would welcome an Islamic state despite all evidence that we would fight the restrictions of any religious order on our liberties. It reminds me of the press conference that was held in Houston for a prominent member of the Taliban back before 9/11. He was there so that the Texas oilmen could try to make business deals with him. A female reporter stood up, held up a burkha and asked how he could promote a society that treated women as chattel. That reporter was laughed at and shouted down by the conservative men at the press conference and was ridiculed by Rush Limbaugh as a 'feminazi'. Assuming you hate the Taliban, it is good to see you finally come around to that liberal/feminist point of view.
So I ask you Carol, when are you going to be on the right side of any fight? If you are on the side of liberty then you will fight to keep religion of any kind out of government. Actual conservatives would agree.

Terrapin wote:
"I thought conservatives got all upset about the curtailment of liberties..."
Maybe at one point in time, but now it seems that "conservative" means pro-torture, anti habeas corpus, in favor of warrentless domestic spying, in favor of an all-powerful executive branch and willing to do anything to squelch any political discourse. (See A Hermit's post above.)
Posted by NoLongerConservative | February 14, 2007 6:02 PM
I don't know, Anna. Would Time have hired you if they thought some choice bits of your blog might become known to average readers? I seem to recall that you were considered "bawdy" in comparison to the other leading blogs.
Atrios and Kos made an issue of Trent Lott reminiscing about the segregation of yesteryear, and Josh has kept the administration's feet to the fire over corruption -- but that's nothing compared to your expose of a Congressional sex scandal you stumbled upon hanging out at the DC bars with your girlfriends.
You can work for Time, but do you meet the standards we hold the Edwards campaign?
Posted by Memekiller | February 14, 2007 7:29 PM
"To: I Hate Republicans:
Yep! Those messages are wonderful examples of Christian love and charity. I'm sure the irony is not lost on Melissa."
They are not even close to examples of Christian love. They are the words of morons who like to rap themselves in the clothes of Christians. It is analogous to all those draft dodging chicken hawks in the Congress who like to wrap themselves in the clothes of the military.
Posted by I Hate Republicans | February 14, 2007 10:22 PM
"You can work for Time, but do you meet the standards we hold the Edwards campaign?"
I've been wondering that too--you yourself could not work for any campaign, and i don't see why your past blogging (which rocked, btw) couldn't become the reasoning behind an attack (reasonable or not) on Time or TW/CNN/AOL/etc.
"it's really a testament to the power of rage as a communications strategy (something bloggers know a thing or two about). Bill Donohue is a paranoid loon who would be right at home under a tin-foil miter"
Except that bloggers don't appear in all media every time they get angry, and this paranoid loon (and his buddies and all the others) all do. Maybe something should be done about that? Why isn't Donohue ranting in an alley like he should be? Why is he instead ranting on CNN and all the other channels, and in all papers and magazines? Why not call for a moratorium on his appearances in all Time/TW/CNN/AOL/etc properties?
Should we hold all of you responsible for his insane ravings since you spread them so effectively and widely? Should we do what he does and tar you all with his brush of hatred and bigotry, like he's trying to do to Edwards? (and this goes for Coulter, Beck, Savage, Limbaugh, and all of them) This will happen, since most of them would be nothing without you guys, and they know it. By continuing to amplify and disseminate their vile messages and attempts to destroy a political candidate, you make what they do work. Why is that?
Posted by amberglow | February 14, 2007 11:17 PM
Donohue really has called a fatwa on Edwards, and you guys are like the state-run channels in the Middle East who faithfully run with it, and then cover the riots about it when you've blown it up enough for them to happen.
Posted by amberglow | February 14, 2007 11:25 PM
Thank you finally for pointing out Donohue is a lunatic. If the media wants to discuss the bloggers' writing fine. But his free access with no disclosure to run a political vendetta was really crappy journalism.
Would you all put on Jesse Jackson to discuss anti black racism by jews without the context of his hymie town remarks? I think not. So why did the media give the blowhard the free pass?

If the fanatical rightwing branch of the Catholic church continues its current course it will soon be necessary to put the Catholic church in its place. It is next to the Nazi SS the most evil institution in western history.

You know, I’m really enjoying Carol Royce being here. Without her, all we’d have to represent the right would be QH, and I suspect he may be just one missed prescription from pulling a Martin Lawrence on the street-corner. It’s not any fun debating him because he gives the impression of being, for lack of a better word, mentally handicapped (sorry, QH).
Carol, though – she makes halfway salient points. Like most neocons, she doesn’t think them through. For example, she pointed out that Democrat Silvestre Reyes also doesn’t know the difference between Sunni and Shia, or didn’t when a reporter quizzed him about it (I bet he knows now!). To which I’d reply that Congressman Reyes should be ashamed of himself, and it’s a good thing he’s not President. I mean, we’d all hate to have an ignoramus as President, wouldn’t we? People who voted for an ignoramus to be President must be ashamed. And anyone who voted for him twice must be DYING of shame.
There is a difference between an ignoramus and an idiot, and I won't go into it here. Personally, I consider W a very shrewd man ... even if he is incurious about things that are very important.
So I welcome Carol to the discussion. She’s just good enough to get in a jab once in awhile, but there is no danger of her winning the fight. It’s sort of like she has slipped into the DA Hamilton Burger role from Perry Mason. That guy never won, but he kept plugging away. An ordinary person would turned in his DA portfolio and joined Perry’s team, but Hamilton kept at it.
I don’t mean this post to be denigrating of Carol in any way. As I said, I think she's pretty smart, and I welcome her to the discussion. And if she can look at how the Republicans have handled Iraq … or Katrina … or any of the debacles they’ve foisted off on this country in their rush to loot the public purse, if she can look at all that and decide that she’s going to come here every day and defend them with every shred of doublethink and every strawman at her disposal, then by golly, this is going to be fun.

Terrapin, don't base your culture on "da vinci code". Get more informed and less paranoid.
Just the facts Jack said : "Two popes, both the current repressed queen with his fabulous custom made Prada shoes and handsome secretaries, and the fascist-sympathiser who died a few months ago, condemned the Iraq War."
Is it all you have to say? Your attack is pitifully cheap.
Posted by Pierre | February 15, 2007 10:58 AM
Must we wade through attacks on the Catholic Church to have a discussion here? When you say something like “the Catholic Church is next to the Nazi SS as the most evil institution in western history,” surely, you must have fired that line off without really thinking about it. Either that, or you need to brush up on history.
As for Donohue, who has been referenced a lot in this discussion thread, I think a lot of Catholics would say Donohue doesn’t represent them at all. Wouldn’t you agree?
Posted by Sean Brodrick | February 15, 2007 11:11 AM
Pierre - As a Catholic who is caught up on all of his sacraments I consider myself informed. I am fully aware of the constraints against which women in the church have been fighting and the numbers of more liberal-minded people that we have been losing to more open-minded organizations like the Episcopalians.
I also have distinct memories of a very recent time when Evangelicals and other conservative Protestants considered Catholics a scourge and the Pope to be Satan himself. In this context the work of Bill Donohue to try to bring Catholics into the same voting bloc as Evangelical/Fundamentalist Christians is luridly disingenuous. He is a spec amongst the vast numbers of Catholics he pretends to represent. He is not the voice of the American Catholic.
Posted by Terrapin | February 15, 2007 11:45 AM
If the Catholic Church remains quiet with respect to attacks the Jew hater Donahue has launched all all Democrats one can only assume the Catholic Church supports his hate filled point of view.
Please speak up so that those of us not of the Catholic faith can be assured he does not speak for that faith.
