Re: The Edwards Question

Husband just asked me what I think of the Edwards' decision. I don't know anyone who is not a member of that family can speak to the actual wisdom or merits of their choice (is there anything more personal?) but I can say what I felt when I heard the news: It felt right to me. It sounded true to both John's and Elizabeth's beliefs. And I have no doubt at all that continuing the campaign was both Elizabeth's idea and her desire. (As I wrote earlier today, she's nothing if not genuine.)

Of course, people will inevitably judge and there will be inevitable political repercussions whose form will be as unpredictable as this race has been unprecedented. For now, I wish the Edwards' only the best of luck and grace in the fight ahead of them.

annb:

Classy.

(I will refrain from comparing you to Jay. )

Bottom line: Liz Edwards, terminal or not, will receive the kind of hands-on, 24/7 medical care and pain management that the union-infested injured at Walter Reed can only dream about - all thanks to her dazzling spousal unit, and ignorant juries. I can fly to Bangkok next week, get a Barney Frank, er, colonoscopy ala Couric, enjoy a few days on the beach, and get back to the States - and still have enough left over for 2 more trips of equal cost, compared to what you'd pay at ANY U.S. facility for the EXACT SAME PROCEDURE. If you doubt it, ask the good folks at Johns Hopkins about their overseas hospital inspections and the growth of medical tourism. Asia, Mexico, and South America are all getting these U.S. exports, to be sure. The brave, selfless trial lawyers should all be proud of these fine results.

masculine_monica_nyc:

What's the "Edwards question"?

Teresa:

Rush was already jumping all over the Edwards today suggesting that he was a horrible person for not quitting this campaign. I think the Edwards are right to go on. She pointed out in her statement today that she feels fine. Why should she curl up in a ball and cry?

Pinson:

What remarkable people John and Elizabeth are. To show the kind of grace and dignity that they did today was admirable. Good for them

Jay Carney, though... finds it all just a little embarassing. Or something:
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1601788,00.html

How is there any question? Did you not watch the press conference? There's no question. They caught it in time and it's treatable and she's sticking to her schedule. Was there a Specter question?

More to the point how come Gingrich and Giuiliani didn't resign their positions to take care of their cancer stricken wives?

I realize that part of this comes because, MSNBC you assumed that this was going to worse than it turned out to be, and you may be having trouble shifting the narrative--or with it turning out to be a non-story. But it is, at this point anyway, a non-story. They had a scare. They're gonna have to be more vigilant and treat it. But that's it.

Flamethrower:

I hope Jay doesn't think Newt's response was the one.

linda:

Ana is human. The non-human pundits are the ones that are 'creating' the Edwards Question which is starting to look a lot like Question Hillary.

QH is obviously very angry. Too bad his anger is not directed at the cause (US Health providers Cabal) rather than the effect (litigation). I base the 'he' on the fixation on colonoscopy discussions.

Let's get to the Gates threat of loss of military readiness over the pending Supplementary Bill. BS, Congress has passed every funding bill for defense and the Military has continued to lose readiness. That is based on the poor judgement of the WH and the DoD. Place the blame where it belongs. And there is no possibility of 'didn't realize' or 'hazy memory' cutting it because the testimony and the votes on the floor and in committee for loss of readiness is in the record for those who care to make informed decisions.

linda:

As for Rush, we know how he does Parkinson's. How does he do 'breast cancer'?

JPL:

I for one appreciate the optimism the Edwards portrayed. They have both decided to live and our country will be the better for it. It's amazing to me that Newt can walk away when the going gets tough and get a pass on the Hate Radio channels but two loving people who made the announcment of the return of her cancer get slammed. Ann, thank you for your post.

jbk:

If she was married to Newt, the divorce papers would be filed already. Such classy folks the rightwingers are.

Ferruge:

Jay Carney pretends to be concerned over how "us voters" will think of this decision.

Give it up Jay - we all know your code. Stop being Concern Troll and just say what *you* think, instead of trying to couch it in terms of what others may or may not think.

linda:

jbk, maybe you could tell us what you think a Giuliani presser would have been like under the same circumstances. It's just too gross for me to consider. Or maybe Jay can change it to the 'Rudy Question' for recreational punditry.

Dead Horse:

Jay is the kind of guy that you meet at a party who plays devils advocate until everyone steps away from him.

Speaking of Jay, where has he been?

"Speaking of Jay, where has he been?"

hanging around the cancer ward, harassing patients.

Dejah Thoris:

Where were the negative commenters when Mitt "I Never Said I'd Quit for My Wife's Illness" Romney paraded his wife around a week or two back and bragged about her multiple sclerosis and how it won't keep him out of the race. Situational ethics? You betcha. What's good for the Rethugs apparently is horrible when Democrats do the exact same damned thing. I'm tired of Rethug hypocrisy when it comes to personal decisions about marriage, illness, sex, and one's own body. Like slobbering child molesters, they can't seem to keep their hands off the subject.

But then again, we've been exposed to years of Republican hypocrisy. Some things never change.

Racheal:

Gee.

First Ladies Betty Ford and Nancy Reagan had breast cancer. First Lady Laura Bush had cancerous spot removed on her ankle? President Reagan had cancerous skin cells removed..and he left office in the early stages of Alzheimers.

President Kennedy had Addison's disease. One First Lady had a seizure disorder and would have seizures during state dinners. President Woodrow Wilson had a stroke while in office. President Franklin Roosevelt had polio and later died while in office. President Lincoln suffered from depression and the death of two children, one while in the White House, and yet was considered one of our most effective Presidents.

Life happens, everyone. Death comes to us all, eventually.

Elizabeth Edwards is choosing to live her life. Good for her! No one of us knows how long we have to live...we are all living with a terminal sentence.

The love and care and concern John and Elizabeth Edwards display for one another is something the nation will only benefit from seeing. Love and Care and concern is never something to hide.

Her doctor said she's at an early stage and healthy enough to campaign, and Elizabeth herself said she'd do what she felt like doing.

And why shouldn't she?

IT"S HER LIFE!

mcg:

I have to say, Joe is starting to annoy me into liking him. But Jay just still seems like an a-hole.

The last free clue for otherwise clueless Democraps this election season: 2 of your 3 leading lefty blabberers are total snakes.

You guess the other 1.

For the sake of your pitiful, self-loathing excuse for a political party if not the nation, you might want to choose wisely this go-round - instead of your usual McGovernite mouthpiece norm.

mcg:

I guess I should have made that last comment at Ana's last post, which I just read. Jay seems like an a-hole either way. Will he contribute his "counter-intuitive" thoughts?

By the way, Ana, my wife still talks about your genius "90210" column during college (I think she was a few years behind you). Maybe you should do some more blogging about TV.

Dead Horse:

"I have to say, Joe is starting to annoy me into liking him. But Jay just still seems like an a-hole."

I agree. I kinda feel sorry for Joe; Jay not so much.

wg:

Did not John Edwards state a few days ago that his wife is his first priority? Why has he now decided to continue in the race? Nevermind what Liz Edwards says in public. I'm sure it's only a front. My wife had breast cancer over six years ago and is still cancer free. Fortunately, I had already retired several years prior to that and was able to take care of her. Unfortunately, Liz Edwards's cancer has spread to her bones and possibly to her lungs. This is the worst scenario possible. John Edwards is not the average person who has to work to support his family. He is extremely wealthy and can afford to retire and stand by his wife during this crisis. John Edward's decision to stay in the race shows what kind of individual he really is. His main concern is the power of the presidency. Will I vote for him? Never!

JGabriel:

Question Hillary: "Liz Edwards, terminal or not, will receive the kind of hands-on, 24/7 medical care and pain management that the union-infested injured at Walter Reed can only dream about - all thanks to her dazzling spousal unit, and ignorant juries. I can fly to Bangkok next week, get a Barney Frank, er, colonoscopy ala Couric [...]"

Once more, QH, you are a perfect representative of the Republican Party. You express their views better than anyone else here.

JimPortlandOR:

My god there are some vile people in the world, too many of them seem to flock in this swampland.

Does 'wg' think that Elizabeth has no voice in what she does with her life? Or that she may prefer that she and John share his quest for the Presidency - that she passionately beliefs in?

And 'wg' says that he's "sure it only a front". Telepathic much?

But 'wg' is just a fool and his voice is small (as is his heart), but Jay Carney? What's his excuse, other than he's a self-important Chief Correspondent with a mission to concern troll the Edwards lives and the reaction of the American people?

Jay says: "Edwards' supporters, and surely many average Americans, have to be wondering at what point the candidate will decide that his duties as husband and father to three children, including a 6 and 8 year old, trump his duty to his country and the cause of winning the White House." Did Newt Gingrich's wife's cancer cause Jay to say that Newt's duty was to his wife - the wife he filed for divorce from while she was still in the hospital? And the same for Rudy Guliani?

Shouldn't Elizabeth's passionate belief that her husband would be good for the country - more important than sitting by her bedside - be the controlling force ON THEIR LIVES?

The verdict on Jay has been pronounced by Jane Hamsher (which I totally agree with):

Let the Condesending Bullshit Begin, she says.

"What patronizing drivel. How thoroughly offensive."

Loupy:

Hey QH,
I'm sure I guy like yourself is a veteran, right?
You're bound to be.
Mental Health help is actually available at the VA.
It's usually called "Desk D".
I've been there myself.
I'm sure you can get an appointment somewhere in the backlog of those returning Iraq War veterans, and the restimulated PTSD cases from Vietnam.

JGabriel:

Seconding what JimPortlandOR said.

BTW, does anyone know if QH actually is a Republican / Conservative? Or is she (or he) just a flawless Little Green Footballs simulacrum?

Anonymous:

The fact that several of QH's responses to the last few blog posts about Elizabeth Edwards were shoddy copy-paste jobs had me this close to concluding that QH is a spambot.

Sadly, QH appears to be a flesh-and-blood person. Makes me wish I were a spambot.

Tiparillo:

And QH spitebots misinformation about the cost of healthcare:

"In a speech in Little Rock, Arkansas on Jan. 26 the President said, “One of the major cost drivers in the delivery of health care are these junk and frivolous lawsuits.” He said rising malpractice insurance premiums and needless medical procedures ordered up out of fear of lawsuits cost federal taxpayers “at least” $28 billion a year in added costs to government medical programs. Bush’s Department of Health and Human Services claims total savings – public and private – of as much as $108 billion a year.

Those claims rest mainly on a single 1996 study by two Stanford economists who said caps on damage awards could hold down overall medical costs by 5% to 9%. They studied heart patients who were hospitalized, compared costs in states with and without limits on malpractice lawsuits, and then projected their findings to the entire health-care system.

But both the GAO and the CBO now question their sweeping conclusion. When the CBO attempted to duplicate the Stanford economists’ methods for other types of ailments they found found “no evidence that restrictions on tort liability reduce medical spending.”

“In short, the evidence available to date does not make a strong case that restricting malpractice liability would have a significant effect, either positive or negative, on economic efficiency, ” the CBO said."

"Rush was already jumping all over the Edwards today suggesting that he was a horrible person for not quitting this campaign. "

You know you're doing the right thing if Rush Limbaugh is attacking you. He is a pig.

John & Elizabeth Edwards make me happy to be an American.

James, Los Angeles:

Yeah, Jay's thoughts on Elizabeth Edwards are wholly without merit and are contemptible, arrogant, and condescending. However, they are completely in character.

Jay has no basis whatsoever in opining what anyone outside his myopic circle of sycophants think about the Edwards' decision, much less what "voters. But he has shown himself to be consistently wrong, so no surprise there. But his Limbaugh-like emanations should have been kept to himself; he has exposed himself as a contemptible cad.

Phil:

Who's he going to tip his hat to, to make amends for this one?

Rock:

I don't think anyone will leave Edwards campaign, assuming the post-cancer status quo continues. However, one has to wonder if there will be a chilling effect on the advisors or fundraisers he's poised to collect. If someone is only going to go for Edwards, this will not deter he or she. However, if they're strung between Edwards and another candidate to support, I have to think that the alternative candidate is more attractive only because Edwards faces having to possibly leave the race if his wife's condition becomes significantly worse. Thoughts Swamplanders?

jbk:

To commenter Linda who asked me "maybe you could tell us what you think a Giuliani presser would have been like under the same circumstances. It's just too gross for me to consider."

I'm not sure why you think I would diagree, except maybe I should have been clearer in my earlier post and said Republican instead of right-wingers when I noted how Newt treated his wife when he found out she had cancer.

I'm in Manhattan so I saw live on the ch.2 noon news how Rudy treated his wife when he announced he was dumping her - just at the exact same time she and their kids did.

So, no, Rudy doesn't get any "good husband" points in my book - let's make it Republicans are generally skeevy, not just "right-wingers."

Thanks.

JWC:

I want to thank Ana for a voice of sanity from a "pundit". Jay, well I would not pass the screens if I said what I think about his comments. I watched the press conference. I respect their decision. Anyone who knows anything about EE knows she meant every word she said.

Jeany:

I'm glad to see respectable sensibilities somewhere at Time.

I feel competent to answer one question Jay Carney posted: he asked "I wonder how voters will react to that sentiment," refering to the ways Edwards characterized his and his wife's response to the news of her cancer and how they planned to cope.

I'm a voter. I'm better than good with the sentiment. I immediately thought of the worst possible scenario, this relationship that's obviously so strong, that has empowered him to seek higher service to the country when he could have kicked back and played for the rest of his life, what would the consequences be of him elected president only to lose her? What a horrible scenario, but hasn't he just told us he could and would carry on? And don't we already know he could and would, because their answer to losing a child was to make more, and at the same time throw themselves into the public meat grinder of running for office?

For my money and future, John and Elizabeth Edwards are the much needed antidote to the poison that's been dumped on this country for the last 30 years. I couldn't be more encouraged.

linda:

jbk--oops, didn't mean to dis you but nominate another GOPer for Ex-A****** of the Campaign Trail. SORRY.

jbk:

Linda: Newt, Rudy, Limbaugh, McCain, DeLay - who is now being rehabilitated (mostly on NBC for some reason) - they are ALL skunks when it comes to the family values they claim to cherish and defend so much. But as long as they talk the talk, the Christian right and the Chris Matthews and Jay Carneys of the world happily buy their crap.

linda:

jbk, you got that right. DeLay, selling his book and his self-righteousness, was on Wolf today and I had to turn it off. At least Dobbs had some redemption for CNN with Leahy on, but then Dobbs tried to dis the stand Leahy has taken as 'unimportant'.

Rich:

It's their decision and theirs alone.

My hope remains the same: that John Edwards will be the next president and that Elizabeth will be a two term first lady.

dvdr:

why should we care what you "felt" when you heard the press conference? Do you so underestimate your audience to imagine that we're interested in what you "feel" about John Edwards? We're interested in news and insight. Report some of the former or come up with some of the latter. Keep your "feelings" to yourself; they're not interesting enough to be worth our time.

Anais:

Why do people think Edwards should quit because his wife has incurable, though treatable, cancer? Do other men have the luxury of quitting their jobs because their wives have the same condition? No, they have to continue onward because their families depend on them for their livelihoods. Granted, Edwards is wealthy enough to retire completely from public life. But the Edwardses made it clear that SHE wanted him to continue on. To do otherwise is to admit that the cancer is more important than living your life, being caught up in the disease, instead of being caught up in ... life. I'm glad the two of them chose to live their lives in the way they think suitable, not other people's notions of what they should do.

Todd:

Yes why isn't Elizabeth Edwards running now as his running mate! Two 4 One!!! Runningmates 4EVER!!!

Everyone is coming out of the woodwork to love her now that she is Out about her cancer. Can we all ride on the bus and chat with her? Where is her Straight-Talk Express?

Although I think I enjoy the Everyone hates Jay Carney comments the most. He's the clueless, tone-deaf blogger in this swampland.

carsick:

Inevitably, I think he'll start to lose donors out of uncertainty of his future due to the unfortunate circumstances.
Doesn't mean he won't make a grand VP choice though. And that position in a race could still allow him time to tend to his family if necessary.
Of course, she might make a great VP choice herself!

carsick:

It's funny to me that Ana Marie, best known for Wonkette, has become the one to not overlook the facts in her her blog posts while the presumed pundits with journalistic backgrounds are the ones who look more suspect in their approach. She inserts the personal, as blogs allow for if not require, yet still doesn't wash over the known knowns.

rain39:

If Elizabeth had needed and wanted John to quit, you can be sure that he would have and helped her through these next months. Elizabeth needed him to go on with his campaign because she believes in him and our country. She will join him as much as she can.

If the slime balls in journalism and politics want to make an issue of this, I'm praying they will pay big time at the gates of heaven and hell. They will surely pay in politics because the American people have a very warm spot in their hearts for Elizabeth Edwards and just won't tolerate pot shots at her or John any more. Without their character assassinations, what does the right have any more?

Michla:

Mr. Carney, perhaps you and Rush can compare notes the next time you run in to him at a future inside the Beltway cocktail weenie circuit. It would seem the two of you have much to share. That, of course, would not include "journalism."
