Alberto Gonzales is a disgrace.

Why is it so unbelievable? You put him there.
Further, you bolster his partisan operation with every repeated critically untested TALKING POINT!
And to be fair, it's not just you. It's many in the MSM.
Joe, this administration is "incoherent" because the MSM has provided this administration with latitude that can only make Jefferson roll over in his grave.
This is, in large measure, your doing. Don't act shocked. Not now. Not when you have refused to speak truth to power, and still do.
Just continue echoing Talking Points. Keep spreading half-truths on Democratic options in Iraq. Keep framing the debate in the EXACT same manner that those on the cock-tail weeny circuit would like for you to, and they will keep permitting you to have access. Your career will be safe. Your writing will be the stuff of lore and legend. For God's sake, don't bite the hand that feeds you...dare not even to bark at your master.

bomb, bomb, bomb, planted questions avoid road side bomb, bomb (applause sign), bomb Iran.
I think I said on another earlier thread that Bush has lost it, all the 'Rove staff' is busy else where so with 'no new speeches' he gets lost and repeats old lines all mixed up from different 'slogan' days. He, Gonzo, and Barney now have the same 'coach'.
If McCave takes Barbara Ann for his theme song, maybe Bush could hook up to "Walkin' the Dog".
Posted by linda | April 19, 2007 6:00 PM
Seriously, Joe C-Span2 carried Sen. Lincoln's home run speech for the 'good guys' today. Can you find a link and push the content in a positive direction?
Posted by linda | April 19, 2007 6:09 PM
damn, and here I was expecting to see something special... but it was typical Bush.
I'd be curious to know when this Town Hall meeting was originally scheduled (and when the decision to allow cameras was made).
Given the infrequency of these meetings (at least televised versions of them) the APPEARANCE is that Bush thinks he can use the "momentum" from his visit to VT to get higher approval for his Iraq message across -- and the question is whether this appearance of the same old Bush that America has come to know and despise will negate the "positives" of his pantomime of grief at VT... or vice versa.
(and god help the guy if this was a last minute deal -- that would make it obvious that he is exploiting the VT tragedy for political gain.)
Posted by paul_lukasiak | April 19, 2007 6:10 PM
I'm guessing from the questions that this is another one of those "pre-selected" audiences in which no one other than true blue Republicans can attend. I think it would be a service for CNN to remind people of this before allowing this on the air. It is unfair to allow him unfettered access to the airwaves for what is basically a "staged" event.
Wouldn't you love to see him actually answer a HARD question when you see what he does with softballs?
Posted by Teresa | April 19, 2007 6:17 PM
Teresa: I saw this on CNN originally and they definitely said that he was speaking before a 'friendly' audience. I recall hearing and I think it is true that he doesn't speak until each person in the audience signs some kind of 'loyalty oath'.
Posted by linda | April 19, 2007 6:22 PM
sounded like VT Cho to me. rambling inane, incoherant, delusional.

Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2007 6:31 PM
Just linking to something and saying it's unbelievable doesn't help much.
Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2007 6:32 PM
Is this really so unbelievable?
This is the man who has required everything from proof of Republican party membership to signed loyalty oaths to see him speak. For six long divisive years.
This very event was one where such things were required to get in.
This is who George W. Bush has always been, since day one, as President of the United States. Alberto Gonzales was always the slippery partisan hack he was before his testimony before Congress today.
Posted by Cynical Bostonian | April 19, 2007 6:39 PM
Did I miss something? This sounds exactly like every other Bush speaking engagement - replete with the usual stumbling and bumbling responses to softball questions (slow pitch, of course). I was expecting something more -- maybe a Freudian slip, a new Bushism, a rogue questioner: anything, really.
Posted by Cubiclewarrior | April 19, 2007 6:40 PM
Well I did a little research, and it would appear that Bush is exploiting VT for political reasons.
The visit was announced Monday... but was announced solely as a speech. There is no mention of the "Town Hall" format that is evident... and the first mention that he might take questions was yesterday (and it was purely speculative).
It is notable here that the format is "town hall", its an "in the round" arrangement of chairs, and not Bush answering questions from a podium.
Posted by paul_lukasiak | April 19, 2007 6:41 PM
Yeah, I honestly didn't see anything too crazy here. I mean... who did you think Bush was? Really, what did you expect him to be? Some great orator?
Given the introduction, I expected him to be much worse. This is pretty par for the course.

This may just be the first time Joe watched Bush sober.

Ummm, Alpha Male, Buddhist Temples, Sighs, love canal, I invented the internet, Al Gore is a liar, I want to have a beer with Bush.
Does this ring any media bells?
The media wanted Clinton in 92 were neutralish in 96. They wanted Bush in 2000. This is a non partisan analysis. Clinton got better coverage in 92 then Bush Sr. The press wanted Senior gone.
In 2000, the press wanted Gore to lose. Period. In a 50/50 election, if you all spent less time saying that Al Gore was a terribly lying wooden loser, and did nothing else, would the results have been not even close?
ABC has spent 3 days discussing John Edwards' haircuts now. You know damned well Republican wealthy guys get expensive haircuts too. It's just going to be the same old same old again isn't it?

GE...
its going to take some time... there is supposedly alot of material -- not just that one.
It takes time to arrange all that stuff...plus do the VideoMix for MTV (they'll probably have a contest for who submits the best song/s for background) plus the various "audio commentary" tracks have to be recorded.
I'll wait for the deluxe 2 disc set --- that includes the "inspiring" work of the Boys From Columbine, a special look at how forensic scientists cope with a rush of bodies to autopsy, and a reading of the selected works of the UnaBomber by Morgan Freeman.
Posted by paul_lukasiak | April 19, 2007 7:54 PM
Gee Joe, you're slow but eventually you do catch on. Unhinged and incoherent? You just noticed this now? He's been like this since 2001.
Posted by demkat620 | April 19, 2007 8:07 PM
Unbelieveable? I think the term "disgrace" would fit here a lot better. And, yeah, you played your part in getting Bush to where he is today. Aren't you glad Bush is answering questions instead of "Frenchy"?
By the way, I hope Time isn't planning on putting any photos of that gun freak in their next magazine. It would be nice if the editors there would decide not to sensationalize this tragedy and glorify the murderer.
Please serve the public interest, and don't pander to the interests of the public.
Posted by Observer | April 19, 2007 8:15 PM
I'm not sure it's the public that wants this wall-to-wall coverage of the nutcase. That's what the MSM is feeding us of its own volition. It gets the bad stuff off the front page.
Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2007 8:20 PM
Plus it lets the pundits bloviate in a fact-free space. Perfect for lazy pundits.
Posted by Anonymous | April 19, 2007 8:21 PM
I don't know that unbelievable is the right title. Why not "typical" - it sounds the same as when he's scripted (are you sure he's not scripted? I would bet money that he is scripted as usual here but can't do anything right), and really close to when he's trying to read a teleprompter.
That was a total waste of my time, as there wasn't anything there I haven't heard before or that was even remotely funny. Give me back those two minutes Joe Klein!
Posted by Hillrod | April 19, 2007 8:55 PM
Joe, Joe, Joe.
I get it. Like you, I've been ridiculed for taking an anti-doctrinaire liberal approach, even though I've strongly, forcefully tried to express the opinion that we need to head in that direction.
Fortunately for me, I'm not a Big Time Talking Head Hypocrite, who lives and dies for his/her invitations.
Go back and read what you wrote about Gore and Kerry, and get back to us.
For the record, in 2000 you guys had me fooled. I didn't see a dime's worth of difference between Gore and Bush, and my only excuse is that I got the information from you, and those of your ilk.
To all, I apologize.

I dont think he was unhinged or anything - i could understand every thing he said - he did stammer at times (which almost every one is used to now after 6 years) but he was largely coherent.
Of course, you may not agree with what he said but i dont see him being unhinged or incoherent
Posted by NS | April 19, 2007 9:04 PM
Coherent? Bush can't even handle something as fundamental as subject-verb agreement.
As others have said, he's been this way for the last six years.
I understand respecting the office someone holds, but this guy should have been hounded relentlessly by the press ever since he illegitimately stumbled into office.
Why? Because he's clearly not fit for it. Or smart enough for it. Oh, that's right--smart people should be ridiculed, because, uhh, they seem kinda gay or French or something.
But it would have been a sign of respect for the office of President if the American press had done its job and treated this buffoon like the British press would have.
Obviously, none of these sentiments are new. But they bear repeating until the press learns how to judge people's fitness for office.
Posted by Enceladus | April 19, 2007 9:23 PM
more deep thoughts from Joe Klein:
"the Democratic Party has had a love affair with eggheads, and sad to say, high IQ is not a leading indicator of success in the presidency."
Posted by zota | April 19, 2007 9:24 PM
Enceladus, that's right, exactly. I am so weary of watching our half-wit President stagger through any public speaking event. He's a moron now, he was manifestly a moron in year 2000. The press propped him up every step of the way. They clean up his grammer when they quote him, and they respectfully avert their eyes when he makes a fool of himself.
Posted by Drits'n'Dravy | April 19, 2007 10:47 PM
Mr. Klein,
Thank you. Yesterday, I wrote that you pander to
your readers. Today, you pander to the liberal
blog which has been most critical of you. You
are scared to death that you will be totally
irrelevant after 2008. You are trying to become
a member of the liberal gang because you know
America's 25+ years of conservative domination
are about to end. You are desperate to get off
the sinking Bushie ship you worked hard to help
build and keep afloat. In fact, you stayed onboard
until Iraq ripped it wide open and it headed for
the bottom. As noted by "zota", you are a
self-serving careerist, a sycophant to whomever
makes you feel important, and an analyst who is
very adept at stating the obvious and terrible
at forecasting the likely future effects of
current events.
If your purpose wasn't primarily to flatter
an influential blog, and if you had an iota of
self-awareness, you would have linked to today's
David Broder column. He is writing about "pundits"
and "journalists" like you. In fact, when I read
his column, I thought of your disgraceful
appearances with Chris Matthews, the most insane
"serious" commentator in the history of
television. Mr. Imus looked to Mr. Matthews for
guidance and Mr. Matthews looked to you!
You are soon to be a man without a country. You
will have severed your ties to conservatives and
liberals cannot, under any circumstances, trust
you. Pander until you drop, your credibility and
clout with the powerful is gone with the Bushie.
On the other hand, maybe you can gain the trust
of another presidential candidate, write another
"anonymous" "novel" and betray him, and make
enough money to ease the pain of the obscurity of
the rest of your life.

History will record that between 2000 and 2008 the office of the US Presidency was discredited by George W. Bush, and that the media in the USA were key enablers in that time period. They were asleep a lot of the time, and when they were awake, they simply parroted talking points and engaged in no significant analysis of assertions, arguments and evidence.
The MSM role in the last 6 years is analagous to the family that covers up for the patriarch who is abusive and addicted. They skate past his indiscretions, give him the benefit of the doubt at every term, pay exaggerated respect to him in public and cover up his anti-social behaviour. They are still doing it right now; incredibly, some media outlets are reporting that Alberto Gonzalez did well in his Senate appearance. Not are some MSM folks enablers, they apparently live in a different universe than the one I inhabit.
Posted by Graham Shevlin | April 19, 2007 11:10 PM
Unbelievable? Hardly. What's unbelievable to me is how many people overlooked that fact that George W. Bush was a stammering idiot when he ran for President the first time.
It's not unbelievable to me, because I was paying attention all along.

Teresa, how about instead of 'True Blue Republicans' we use the more chromatically correct 'Bred Red Republicans'. I think it has a nice ring to it, as well as a nice gloss of truth.
Posted by ZSM | April 20, 2007 7:39 AM
Well, so far I have NOT viewed the video, but I'm working on it.
The very worst that I recall Bush was prior to the 2004 election when Bush was speaking before a group of minority journalists. This was shown on C-Span, as I recall. Some journalist asked him a question about American Indian sovereignty. Poor Bush stumbled and bumbled so much that I was literally down in the floor laughing. The audience was clearly on the verge of laughing in Bush's face as well.
If someone can find that video or a link to it for Joe Klein, I'd like to hear him compare the one he's referenced here with that one.
Clearly, Bush represents The Dumbing Down of America.

I think it's pretty amazing that CNN showed all that. No comment needed, either.

Mr. Klein,
If you are hesitant to call for impeachment, at least call for Mr. Bush to step down for reasons of mental competence.
Posted by bartkid | April 20, 2007 9:33 AM
Joe, finally was able to finish downloading the video and to view it. That performance was pretty close to the sovereignty one I mentioned above.
Loved how Bush characterized Iraqis when comparing Vietnam with Iraq. "The vast majority of people want to live underneath that constitution they passed (My mind did strange things with that image--street people trying to cover themselves with paper); they want to live in peace. And what you are seeing is radical on the fringe creating chaos and *ORDER* to either get the people to lose confidence in their government or for us to leave."
PERFORMANCE RATING: Failure
Posted by ama | April 20, 2007 10:15 AM
Joe,
I found the sovereignty video. You really should view it.
I haven't viewed this version since I saw it on TV when it happened. I sincerely hope this snippet captures all the idiocy that I saw that day.

Does this mean you're taking back the mean things you've said about Atrios, Joe?
Bush is no more incoherent here than he was back on the campaign trail in 2000. The difference is that back then you guys and gals of the press corps were constantly covering for him, trying to make him seem less stupid than he obviously was, trying to convince everyone that he was a serious candidate.
If Bush had gotten fair treament from the press back in 2000, instead of the kissy-kissy tongue bath he did receive, he would have been nowhere near the White House. Just watch the DVD of Alexandra Pelosi's "Travels With George" again. You press people were like a bunch of high school kids kissing up to the most popular kid in school.
Posted by nemo | April 20, 2007 11:29 AM
Hey, does anyone know why Atrios still has the title "Eschaton" on his blog, when no one ever, ever refers to it as anything but "Atrios"?

Go back and watch the first 2000 Presidential debate between Gore and Bush. His incompetence was just as on display then as now. I remember thinking he couldn't possibly become President after that; I still don't understand how it was possible.

Hey, go easy on him. I remember his father, who once admitted, "Fluency in English is something that I'm often not accused of." The apple CAN'T fall far from the tree. I'm amazed that Jeb is as articulate as he is.

Joe, it was you, and your colleagues, who convinced me there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between Al Gore and George Bush in 2000.
I am embarrassed for having listened to you and trusted you (and your colleauges), but I assure you (and your colleagues) that it won't happen again.
George Bush has fallen up his entire life, this much is obvious now, and you lent a helping hand to lift him to the next level.
You are an overpaid moron. There are so many people out there on-line who have (and have always had) it more right than you do that it should be humiliating, or would be to someone with any degree of self-reflection.
Can't get my mind off that Alterman confrontation when I bother to come here, because it says so much about Joe Klein, the man.
What it says isn't good.
We're all wrong from time to time, Joe. The difference between the rest of us and you (and your colleagues...Bill Kristol?...that "intellectual" hasn't been right in at least 6 years) is that most of us can admit it.
Here: Read stuff like this once in a while, if your ego can handle it.

He, too, is a good writer.
Things don't die in today's world, Joe. C'mon board, which will entail admitting you're a cocktail weenie sucking whore of the highest order.
I know that would be hard. For anyone.
