What Would Jesus Do?

Everyone's favorite opera buff, the National Review's John Derbyshire, demonstrates the kind of support for our troops that the right likes to get so charged up about:

Once again, it's me and Ralph Peters on the same wavelength, deploring the cowardice of the British sailors and marines kidnapped by Iran. When it happened, I said I hoped the ones who'd shamed their country would be court-martialed on return to Blighty, and given dishonorable discharges after a couple years breaking rocks in the Outer Hebrides (which, believe me—I've been there—have a LOT of rocks). Now, I confess, I wouldn't shed a tear if some worse fate befell them.

The only coherent response I get to these sentiments is: "How do you know what they've been through? How would YOU stand up?" To which the obvious reply is the one Dr. Johnson gave in some similar case: "I may criticize a carpenter who makes me a bad table, though I cannot make a table myself. It is not my job to make tables."

Obviously, the solution is to kill the carpenter, which means no one would have any tables but maybe then Frank Miller would make an awesome movie about it and Derbyshire and Peters could watch it alone, in the dark, by themselves.

ALSO: Derbyshire says, "I nurse a quiet hope that if put to the test, I would stand up as well as any Marine." I nurse a quiet hope that he meets one of those Marines in a dark alley sometime.

Xenos:

How the hell does Derbyshire, or anyone else, for that matter, know what the Royal Marines' orders were? If they had been ordered to fight to the death in this situation, then I suppose they ought to have done so. Maybe they were ordered to avoid conflict with the Iranians, and to let the diplomats sort things out if the Iranians were to jump them.

How the hell can Derb be upset at these soldiers for letting _him_ down? He does not even know what they were supposed to do! What an utter poser.

"Now, I confess, I wouldn't shed a tear if some worse fate befell them. "

Jaysus, what an a**hole.

Leah:

Good catch, Ms. Cox. I share your quiet hope. What the heck, I'd be satisfied with Derbyshire getting a good slapping around from Chelsea Clinton.

The Corner's been rife with disappointment at Blair and the entire population of the British Isles. You'd never know Tony Blair ruined himself by being loyal to the policies of George Bush in Iraq, policies now generally accepted as catastrophic, every one of them supported by the gang at The Corner. Also, Iran has been acting in contradiction to the Geneva Accords, which don't allow for interrogation of seized military members; in that context, I think it's ridiculous for any expectation that the individuals seized have some sort of obligation to complicate their own release by resisting demands made on them.

It's obvious that the so-called confessions were coerced.

I have no problem with the behavior of either Blair or those 15 sailors.

linda:

OMG, of all the sh** that's not fit to print, this has to be in the top 10 of the Hall of Shame.

Maybe this noble dude would like to volunteer to take the place of one of the Brits being held in Iran and put his butt where his mouth is or has he already done that.

kekuta:

The keyboard commandos...they refused to serve in their generations war, but are willing to send other people to die for their wet dreams.

Jake Gittes:

How about someone write a post about the forgotten man on the Time Blog, Rudy Giuliani, America's Transvestite Mayor, and his views about Presidential power. I'm sure Jay Carney is VERY worked up about it....probably pounding at his keyboard as we speak. If we got 1/3 the amount of words out of him as we got out of the issue of Elizabeth Edwards refusing to go die in private as she should, I'd be amazed.

Greenwald, of course...
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/

Over the weekend, it was revealed by National Review's Ramesh Ponnuru that Rudy Giuliani believes that, as President, he would have the power to imprison American citizens without any sort of review of any kind. That Giuliani expressly believes that, as President, he can exercise one of the most tyrannical and un-American powers there is received notice only in the blogosphere, but not in any national media outlets.

Rudy was asked about the Iraq supplemental. He said he finds it "irresponsible and dangerous." Then he began to muse about, after a veto, "would the president have the constitutional authority to support them [the troops], anyway?"
He seemed to suggest that Bush could fund the Iraq war without Congress providing funding...... In an interview with a New Hampshire TV reporter after his remarks, he seemed more categorical and said, since the war had been authorized by Congress, the president has "the inherent authority to support the troops."

It really should go without saying that (as even Bush supporter Rich Lowry recognizes) these comments ought to be a major media story. One could even argue that, standing alone, they are office-disqualifying. Particularly in light of Giuliani's belief in process-less arrest of American citizens, this really is a complete repudiation of how our government works, of the most basic and unquestioned constitutional principles of our republic. Literally.

Any chance of a rousing post from Joe Klein, like a drunken Richard Burton, decrying the Authoritarian bent of the GOP these days, and Rudy Giuliani in particular?

Michael Gardner:

So by Mr. (using the term loosely) Derbyshires' logic, on a personal basis one should admire the victims of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo as well as other "off shore" facilities of the CIA for withstanding their treatment, correct?

PaleoProf:

Why is it always those who never served who always manage to talk the most sh**?

PP
Former (if there is any such thing) USMC NCO.

Ralph P.:

Pay no attention to Derbyshire. His post was written mid (angry) felch. He was not thinking clearly.

Chris R:

Ah, The Corner. Is there a more unintentionally funny area of the blogosphere?

PS: No Derbyshire post can be complete without reference to the Lolita posts a year or two ago.

bats:

I cannot believe someone would write this article (unless it was written by Colbert on April 1st). What have these 15 done? Have they given away state secrets? No! They went on TV and said they were in Iranian waters. Does ANYONE believe them? No! So this armchair general thinks they should keep their mouths shut and be happy to be tortured for that. What a fool.
And I love the comment about the Australian troops. While I would not criticize any soldiers in Iraq for cowardice (seeing I never volunteered, and am sitting behind a desk in KY) it should be pointed out that the Australian government will not put its soldiers in the firing line (because Howard knows that his government will fall if body bags start coming home – this does not stop him supporting a surge in US troops, but just not a surge in Australian troops), and that only 2 Australian soldiers have been killed in Iraq, compared to 135 Brits. Those damn cowardly Redcoats.

PaleoProf, there are also those who have served who have been talking, uh, smack. I mean, I'm not saying I would do any better in their shoes, but they aren't exactly setting a shining example.

Personally, I'm on the side of those Britons who feel that Blair should be very tough here (as in, give Iran a deadline and then send in the RAF bombers if they don't give in). But then, I also thought Bush was inexcusably weak in how he responded to the Chinese taking American hostages very early in his first term (something people have mostly forgotten about after 9/11).

Jim J:

The Corner is just a bunch of sheltered nerds and sci-fi weenies. They're obsessed with Star Trek and Battlestar Galactica. These are the people we used to jack up against the locker in high school.

arch stanton:

Isn't it obvious that cowardice is a central part of modern conservativism? The fear of the 'terrists' is what drives their zeal for authoritarian government in order to protect them, and what drives their zeal to 'fight them over there, so we don't have to fight them here'. Of course, its always someone else who fights them 'over there'. It is the same fear which prevents them from fighting for their country. I have found the same thing in the barrooms of this country, those tough-talking patriotic red-staters just melt when the conversation becomes arguement, and arguement comes to the brink of altercation, suddenly everything becomes 'cool'. You know, ancient Rome couldn't raise an army from their citizens in the end either. Pretty bad precedent I'd say.

linda:

Slacker, this whole thing is just a whole lot of tit for tat that involves intel agencies that are operating out of control in power vacuums with governments trying to act like they are buff and are in charge. Bombs for brains, blarney Barney. Or if some of these 'leaders' brains were bombs they wouldn't have enough fire power to blow their noses.

ama:

John Derbyshire<======In contention for biggest POS in the USA, along with Mark Steyn, Rush Limbaugh, O'Reilly, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, A. Coulter, Matthew Dowd, Karl Rove, et al.

People like Derbyshire know NO SHAME! They have no self awareness and no conscience.

Hey Ana,
Tell me how old Brian Walsh is and whether he has ever visited a rural area in the USA? I'm sooooo curious about his lack of common sense that I'm beside myself. If we shear cotton from sheep, how many sheep would we have to shear to fill a riverboat full of cotton bales? If we shear cotton from sheep, why did those Southern Rebels sing, "I wish I was in the land of cotton."?
Thank you for your attention. I continue to beseech thee to answer my question.

WTH:

Is everyone associated with NR totally insane?

linda:

ama, maybe Bryan won a Spring Break Trip to a petting zoo to pick a pair of pickles to pack in a peck.

Houston (slightly angry):

Clearly, Mr. Derbyshire has never heard of the Uniform Code of Conduct nor has he been introduced to instructors at 6 weeks of SERE
(Survival Evasion Resistence & Escape).

As a former Capt, I would like to inflict on him the beating that soldier take in training alone to see if he breaks. Nah, he would piss his pants at the very thought.

As Jack Nicholson once said so eloquently in a famous military movie (adapted),

Mr. Derbyshire, we live in a world that is dominated by men who kill you without a moments thought. And those men have to be stopped by men with guns who man a post or fly with rocket fule between their legs. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Mr. Derbyshire?!

I and those men have a greater responsibility than you can possibly fathom. You weep for justice and you curse the advent of a soldier doing his best. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know: That the deaths of these men, while tragic every single one of them, probably brought about the peace and security you enjoy! And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, supports your ability to be the 101st Keyboard Warrior.

You don't want the truth. Because deep down, in places you don't talk about in your gut, you want me and other soldiers in that role. You need me to walk in those boots.

We use words like God, Corps, Code of Conduct, Discipline, Soldier, and Honor...we use these words as the backbone to a life spent serving something greater than ourselves. You use them as a punch line to sell newsletters or articles not worth the ink that is on the paper.

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the protection that these brave men and women provide, then questions the manner in which it is graciuosly provided for them. I'd prefer you just said thank you and went on your merry little way. Otherwise, I suggest you pick up some MOP gear, a rifle, and get in a an unarmored Humvee and drive the streets of Baghdad. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you're entitled to or what you think you would do if you could "nurse a quiet hope that if put to the test, [You] would stand up as well as any Marine."

Pick up a gun or shut up!

Sean Patrick:

How can you have a logical response to someone who's clearly so off-the-charts, that illogical doesn't even describe the stupidity of his comments.

Fingers crossed, fate, whatever. Somebody grab this guy, put him in a similar position, and see how he take it (and release the tape on YouTube for all to see). Technology at its finest.

TomT:

Oh my God, that is absolutely unbelievable.

Franco:

"I nurse a quiet hope that if put to the test, I would stand up as well as any Marine."

I nurse a quiet hope that he gets his opportunity.

jbk:

Did the "Derb" take time out from looking at Internet pictures of 10-year-old Chinese whores to type that crap? I guess it shouldn't be surprising that a likely pedophile is a piece of human flotsam in matters of war also.

Aaron:

"I nurse a quiet hope that if put to the test, I would stand up as well as any Marine."

Enlist.

I'd normally add "or stop yammering about what if" scenarios that will never, EVER happen" but you're not hired at the Corner for the ability to stop providing useless commentary.

So enlist.

Teresa:

Whenever I hear drivel about how "mean" left wing blogs are, I can just point to this kind of crap on the Corner. Wonder if Howie Kurtz will mention it tomorrow? Bet not.

ValisJason:

Where's QH?
