Falwell, R.I.P.
Condolences to the many whose lives he touched, I hope they will not be too offended by a small bit of "news analysis" related his passing: Already the guy filling in for Rush predicts that the "loony liberal left" will use his death to proclaim the "end of the Religious Right." That may happen, but the first instance of "politicization" of his death will, of course, be tonight, when every candidate will have to say something profound about the inventor of the "moral majority."
This debate was going to be all about social conservatism before today, now the focus will likely be even sharper. None of the frontrunners are especially nimble on this subject (and by this I mean Giuliani and McCain and... Thompson); should be interesting.
UPDATE: Commenter Bo234 is more insightful than I was: "Actually, the first politicization of his death was by the guy filling in for Rush who couldn't wait to bash the "loony liberal left" for something they haven't even done." Good point.

"I do question the sincerity of people like the Reverend Martin Luther King..."
"AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals."
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this [9/11] happen.'"
"Labor unions should study and read the Bible instead of asking for more money. When people get right with God, they are better workers."
"I hope to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we don't have public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them."

I'm sure the obituaries will be as pleasant, and as vague and eye-averted, about Falwell's "accomplishments" in American life as those of Bill Rehnquist.
I'll remember Jerry well...for helping normalize the Moonies and otherwise removing the barriers to all kinds of occultism (religious, political, etc.) in the country, creating a new respectability for pseudoscience. For his fervent stands on agrarian fertility cultism, aka 'pro-life' politics. For all the bumper stickers of the early Eighties that took great joy in accurately proclaiming "The Moral Majority is Neither". For giving us Monica Goodling as the shining exemplar of Christian Education. For his deep obedience and allegiance to the Law Of Love, and a life led according to the principles of the Sermon On The Mount....
I'll wait to uncork the champagne on the demise of the 'Christian' Right until Pat Robertson and D. James Kennedy have followed Jerry to the Great Golf Clubhouse In The Sky, though. Bottoms up, guys!!!

Yeah, right.
Try reading the Sermon on the Mount sometime to get an idea of what Christ actually taught.
Falwell was not a Christian.

Why shouldn't Falwell's death be politicized? He was a political activist. When Jesse Jackson dies, it would be ridiculous to insist that no one criticize him on that day, or discuss the state of the movement he led.

The problem is that Falwell and his followers call themselves 'Christians', which means they are followers of Jesus and his teachings.
And as you note, Christ was clearly a liberal. The Sermon on the Mount is about as liberal on the issue of social justice as you can get.

Some of the "amazing things" I recall Falwell having said:
I'm doing from my foggy memory, so these are inexact.
1. Falwell blamed America for 9/11, saying we had turned our back on God.
[This to me was the epitome of arrogance, for what man in his right mind could claim to know the intentions of God?]
2. On CNN (I think), Falwell told Barry Lynn, who claims to be a Christian and advocates for the separation of church and state, that Lynn was NOT a Christian.
[I wondered what ever happened to that part of the Bible that used to say, "Judge not, lest ye be judged."]
3. Falwell gave God credit for Katrina blaming the way the people in New Orleans lived for God's retribution.
[Same as #1.]
4. Prior to the 2004 Republican National Convention, much ado was made about the radical right wingers NOT getting speaking parts at the convention. Falwell, on CNN (I think), said that Karl Rove was a masterful politician or analyst or some such and that he (Falwell) would follow him over a cliff. Falwell said it did NOT matter to him if he and the other Evangelicals were back benched.
[I thought Christians might be willing to follow Christ over a cliff, but to hear a person who called himself a Christian say he was willing to follow Rove, knowing full well the dirty tactics of Rove, was unfathomable to me.]
My only hope is that Falwell is NOT kin to me since one of my great grandmothers was born in Lynchburg, Virginia prior to the Civil War. To discover such a thing would break my heart. :)

The true Christians know that Jesus Christ practiced tolerance, love and forgiveness above all else. I mean come on, JC hanged out with thieves, prostitutes, and lepars. He hanged out with 12 guys. Can you get any gayer than that?
For a man who preached his morality of bigotry and hatred, I forgive Falwell for his lack of compassion and his quick judgment against those who disagreed with his views. Somehow, it is comforting to know that Hitler is in hell saying, "Oh crap, now I have to put with this guy?"

"For giving us Monica Goodling as the shining exemplar of Christian Education."
I think Pat Robertson is the one responsible for all those pseudo lawyers having to retake their bar exams. Regent University/College is a Robertson creation, but you might be right in giving partial credit to Falwell, who founded Liberty University/College.

I have to laugh at the liberal tendency to talk about what "true Christians" do.
I thought liberals hated people who try to judge whether or not someone is a "true Christian". Apparently, they really don't care, they just want to demonize anyone who does not share their narrow and intolerant view of the world.

---------------------
True Christians follow the teachings of Christ. You shall know them by their deeds, correct?
Falwell wrote "God is Pro-War" Christ stated 'Blessed are the Peacemakers". Falwell was behaving completely contrary to the teachings of Christ, hence he can hardly be called a Christian.
Worshipping a god that is pro-war is morally akin to worshipping a god who demands human sacrifice.
Posted by Nick | May 15, 2007 9:36 PM
Mike:
Actually, what I really think it is, is that in the Gospels Jesus says lots and lots of really specific things about what he expects his followers to do and how he expects them to conduct themselves. Anyone can go and read the Gospels. This means that, whenever people who profess to be followers of Jesus do things or say things, anyone can compare their words or actions to what Jesus says in the Gospels his followers should do. If there is a discrepancy between what Jesus says in the Gospels and what his followers actually do now, his followers are really, really vulnerable to being charged with hypocrisy. Consequently, when followers of Jesus advocate doing things that don't seem to conform very well to what Jesus says in the Gospels and when they actually point to the Bible as their authority for why we should do those things, it is both very effective and very easy to undercut those followers' arguments by pointing out their hypocrisy. If we're supposed to do things because of what the Bible says, don't you think it's fair that we should at least be able to check whether the Bible actually supports doing those things? That's not exactly demonization, I don't think.
Now, if Jesus were a lot vaguer in the Gospels—for example, if *everything* he said came in the form of difficult parables—that would be another story. But a lot of the time, he is really not very vague at all, and that's always going to be a problem for *anybody* who tries to make arguments, conservative OR liberal, about how we should behave, individually and as a society, on the basis of Biblical authority.
OK, I hope that's helpful.
Posted by DPS | May 15, 2007 9:38 PM
So, let me see. HIV is God's punishment for homosexuality, New Orleans deserved Katrina because of the way the people there lived, and the 9/11 attack was God's punishment for the immorality of the gay lifestyle, the ACLU, etc..
This begs the question, why did God kill Falwell? Could it be for the hypocricy of all the fundamentalist ministers involved in sex scandals? Or, how about the war in Iraq? Or the scandals and corruption of the Bush Administration that he supported? Or the distruction of the late, great American middle class? Or, how about that he was just a fat, bloated, pompous windbag?
Posted by Johnbo | May 15, 2007 11:46 PM
And with the death of Mr. Falwell comes plenty of examples of how the spirit of the Anti-Christ is alive and kicking in America. The gay "tolerance" crowd demonstrating their hypocrites by cheering and celebrating his death. The anti-bullying and name-calling crowd are calling Christians "haters" and other foul names.

If Falwell was correct, and God is in fact pro-war, then what does it say about people who worship such a god?
A god who favors humans killing each other is not a god who should be worshipped. We have laws against killing, and even the 10 Commandments forbid it.
The moral, honorable, and courageous person would defy rather than worship any god who is pro-war.
If Falwell is correct, then fie on him and his god.

We'll take our chances, 'Un enlightened One'. He wasn't right about much that could be fact checked, which suggests his speculations are poorly uninformed guesses generally.
Funny you should suggest that his God is consistent with the Hebrew Bible and Jewish tradition. People who know what pre-Christian paganism was like in northern and northwestern Europe easily recognize what the whole present American 'Christian Right' phenomenon represents. Falwell's God is/was a lot closer to the Nature deity worshipped by Horsa and Hengist than any Biblical one.

I did. This was the first time I've seen him on TV in ages. He did look horrible, and his defense of Wolfowitz was baffling to me. He believes premarital sex is wrong and even though every single bit of research backs that those who are faithful have happier lives, better sex (not near the impotant rates)and disease is spreading among our young people rampantly.
He said some things that he has apologized for. You and I and anybody with strong opinions oversteps their grounds sometimes. And when Falwell told Barry Lynn, who claims to be a Christian, that he was NOT a Christian was that "of God"? See, you just did the same thing that you accuse others of doing. You claim that what is in someone else's heart is "not of God." You are basing it on typed words. You are judging. Well, many others judged Falwell by the words he spoke too, and often the words that Falwell spoke seemed "not of God."
If there is justice in the hereafter, Mr. Falwell has a lot of 'splainin' to do.
