Right Said Fred
People all over are weighing in on how Fred Thompson's entry into the GOP race will affect other campaigns. I continue to believe that he's the Wesley Clark of the right and will flame out rather quickly, once he realizes that running for president requires more of him than sitting in an overstuffed leather chair dispensing gruff wisdom to earnest Assistant District Attorneys over whiskey. (Yes, I'd rather him stay on the show.)
Some more conventional wisdom:
Jonathan Martin thinks it's bad news for everyone: He notes that it's Rudy that loses the most support in polls in which Thompson is included, he's a more certain choice a social conservative than Romney, and he's a fresh face compared to McCain. Martin also points out that Thompson entering the race puts McCain in the position of running against an old friend and ally.
Chris Cillizza declares Romney to be the biggest loser in Fredstakes, mostly due to the social conservative bona fides Thompson brings. McCain, he says, gets some good and bad effects. Thompson dilutes the support of the rest of the field, but could seriously eat into McCain's fundraising potential. For Rudy, it's almost all good: Thompson will make the fight to be the social conservative choice nasty, and Rudy sail above it all to the nomination.

What should be asked: Mr. Thompson, you spent a single term in the Senate and don't really have anything legislatively that would distinguish you. How does that qualify you in any way to be president?

Well, I read the Politico version, by Mike Allen, after it was announced on CNN earlier today.
"Thompson's formal announcement is planned for Nashville. Organizers say the red pickup truck that was a hallmark of Thompson's first Senate race will begin showing up in Iowa and New Hampshire as an emblem of what they consider his folksy, populist appeal."
Questions I would like answered:
Does his pickin' up truck have a gun rack in the back window?
Does he have a dog box in the back for hound dogs
and/or white robes?
Does he have a Confederate Flag tag on the front of his truck? If NOT, why NOT?
Was he really as lazy as a senator as Hillary Rosen (I think it was) claimed he was?
What did he do during the Vietnam War when many others his age were fighting? Did he spend his time like Bush or Cheney, or did he spend his time more along the lines of Ronald Reagan or John Wayne?

Since the GOPers love THEIR Hollywood types while claiming to hate HOLLYWOOD types, why doesn't someone write a nice essay entitled--
"Wayne's World Redux, GOPer Style"? It could expand on their love of faux cowboys, faux soldiers, faux patriots, and faux government agencies.

Ana - I understand that we must continue with the GOP primary but I continue to be struck with the futility of it. In a just and rational world we would all realize how pathetically outmatched the GOP candidates are in comparison to the Democratic Party candidates. Watching the coverage I have come to the conclusion that the entire spectacle is a grand display of the media's favorite tactic of false equivalence.
Fred Thompson!?! Guiliani!?! Romney?!? McCain??? Is this the best that the GOP can do???
I know, I know, I am bringing forth the ire of conservative commentors who will remind me that Edwards spent $400 on a haircut! Or that Hillary wants to be president! And, to them, those are the important issues on which to base this decision. But please, can somebody write an article stating the obvious: that the depth and breadth of the current Democratic Bench is far more skilled and competent than anything that is bouncing around in GOP circles.
This rant came to me as I was in the middle of analyzing the effect of a Fred Thompson candidacy for President of the United States. And then I realized I had typed the words "a Fred Thompson candidacy for President of the United States" and the surrealness of the entire exercise came crashing down like a bad game of Jenga.

If I recall, when Clark announced there was not a large swath of the Democratic electorate who were completely dissatisfied with the choice of candidates like there is today in the GOP.
That being said, I agree with Florida -- and I think Swampland should lead the way in describing Thompson as a corporate lobbyist and one-term Senator whose career was decidedly undistinguished, and forget about his acting career.
Oh, and I do hope that certain people ask Thompson if he thinks that its a good idea for a man his age with two small children to run for president....

It says something about the state of our politics when a guy like Thompson feels he can throw his hat in. The Rove doctrine of trivialising politics is in good shape. Now we have a chance to elect a Republican of the lowest common denominator in the primary. The Democrats will cream us. We need some time in the wilderness to get rid of the scoundrels who are infesting our party. I would also like Delay and De Newt to go away with their infidelities. We are cursed with a bunch of losers and shysters.

Provided he doesn't implode instantly, Thompson entering hurts Rudy the least and, essentially, guarantees Rudy the nomination.
Not that any Republican candidate in 08 has a chance, unless they pick a fantastic VP (Colin Powell seems like the only possibility) and the Democratic ticket self-destructs (extremely unlikely given Hillary's team).

Van Dyke - Do not despair, my friend. For if the Dems nominate Hillary the conservative ranks will rise on a wave of Pavlovian revulsion and vote against her thus ensuring another four years of incompetent GOP leadership. It doesn't matter that she is intelligent, organized and capable, or that she is the most psychoanalyzed person on the planet and nothing all that startling has come of it. An enormous amount of money has been spent to train millions of Americans to hate this woman and that investment will not go unrewarded.

Thompson will definitely flame out quickly once the conservative honeymoon is over. He won't stand up to the fantasy that has been built up about him.
His own personality and the trophy wife (she's the age of his own daughter) will be two of the biggest obstacles. Plus his 18 year career as a corporate lobbyist.
He has no chance.

Halperin's clumsy bit of fellatio goes into the actual magazine; this bit of fluff goes here. I wonder if Halperin even wiped his face off afterwards, knowing that it will be made just as messy courtesy of Thompson again, or Giuliani, or whichever Republican he decides to do next.
Anyway, the comparison between Thompson and Clark is lazy reasoning. The two candidates are in no way similar, besides getting a lot of buzz prior to their respective entries. Clark was a candidate of convenience: he was appealing because, at that time, he had credentials that people thought would play well in a general election. Thompson is (almost) in because, ideologically, there is a need -- a "hunger" to slip into hackneyed, lazy journo-slopspeak -- on the right for some kind of "true conservative." That makes Thompson a more viable candidate than Clark, because people will be more strongly drawn to a candidate on ideological grounds rather than merely because they think he can win. Clark's credentials overlapped with Kerry's to a large degree, and Kerry had an organization, time in the race, and a long career in politics by the time Clark got in. Thompson is unique in the Republican field, and is entering because of that fact.

God help what our nation and more specifically, the Republican party has become. A bunch of Gunsmoke-sniffing fantasists who believe that if we just puff out our chests far enough, the meanies will leave us alone.

Gotta admit that Sparky was lit. Fred does light his fire. Me, not so much.
Haven't really followed the Sam Walton wannabee in a red pickme up, but there seems to be a big dark zone in his bio that cries for some illumination. Married at 17 got my interest. Other than Fred would have had both married with three kids and student as deferments during Vietnam.
Anybody got the tabloid version of why Fred isn't Rudy as in Delay isn't Newt as in Rudy isn't Newt as in Fred isn't Newt?

Winnipeg: They can use Thompson [campaign] as Wesley Clark [campaign] the same way that they can use the Reagan comparison. Its all part of the smokin' hot image context. What do we want: Diplomacy and Military Might? Then follow it with the quote about remindin' 'em about taxes in DC. WOW, this guy walks on the water MSM carries.
Ah, yes the Osama 9-11 and Sadam linkage comes to mind. If you just get the MSM repeating it to prove that they have insider knowledge, it becomes the truthiness by the next Drudge cycle.
Good thing Thompson played Grant the President, not Grant the Union General.

This guy quits when the goin' gets tuough, and he actually has to work - he's a former senator by choice, because it was too tough to "get anything done in Washington".
Now he wants to be sent back as President. This is about ego and nothing else.

So let me get this straight. Some of you question Fred Thompsons lack of Senatorial experience. The facts as have been shown are that he had eight years as senator. Obama has two years and no legislation and Hillary has what six years and no legislation. The logic that either of these two are somehow more qualified based on time in service to the country as a senator is illogical at best.

A lot of the posters here obviously don't know much about Fred Thompson. First of all, he served one full term and the remainder of Gore Jr's term; he was twice elected with landslide victories. Secondly, Fred was a federal prosecutor, counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee and to a Governor of Tennessee prior to running for Senator. Don't let the laid-back demeanor fool you into thinking he's lazy. He has a defined set of principles and has been consistent with them through his entire life. Fred Thompson is usually the smartest man in the room but doesn't feel the need to prove it and has the class not to try.
