Rudy
On a day when one GOP candidate endorsed the origin myth of Psychlos, I'd be remiss not to draw your attention to the candidate who thought that ferret owners were psycho:
"There is something deranged about you.… The excessive concern you have for ferrets is something you should examine with a therapist.… There is something really, really very sad about you.… This excessive concern with little weasels is a sickness.… You should go consult a psychologist.… Your compulsion about—your excessive concern with it is a sign that there is something wrong in your personality.… You have a sickness, and I know it's hard for you to accept that.… You need help."
And yet, he's a plausible presidential candidate. I love America.

Why is he a plausible presidential candidate? Because of media hacks who write personality-based celebrity-profiles ("McCain is impossible to dislike!" sound familair) instead of writing about, you know, the stuff they might do when they become president and sign laws we all have to live under. It's the Maureen Dowd M.O, and you've internlized it wonderfully. Can't wait for more of that "insight" from you.
Meantime, we'll go over to talking points memo for some political journalism.

That was a great read! Almost as wacky as our current Veep! (And more entertainingly so)
The beltway press won't touch this. They speak of Rudy in glowing terms, in awe, really, of his brave, brave exploits after 911. You know, singlehandedly flying rescue helicopters, manning the firehoses, digging through the rubble with his bare hands. Oh wait....

Yeah, Rudy sounded a little off his rocker debating the merits of ferrets. I remember hearing that when it happened and thinking: Ewww! Rudy and that guy deserve each other.
The thing that I think will sink Giuliani--and I'm amazed that it hasn't shown up yet--is footage from Donna Hanover's little press conference on the steps of St. Patricks during Cardinal O'Connor's funeral. Rudy was inside, sitting in the family seats, with Judith Nathan. Ms. Hanover was, putting it mildly, pissed and she accused Rudy of cheating on his mistress. That's right, she didn't accuse Rudy of cheating on her, his wife, no, she accused Rudy of cheating on Cristyne Lategano with Judith Nathan. Whew! I've never seen a press conference quite like that one. Oh, and to add insult to injury, apparently O'Connor was their marriage counselor. And, yes, Ms. Hanover is a pro on camera and she let me him have it.

I'll accept that there is a small grain of truth to what he's talking about (as I've said before, I'm not a big Kos reader). But the left-right equivalence seems pretty forced. He complains about lack of nuance, but doesn't go into the substance of say, Brock's critique of the media. And as Moyers mentioned, didn't the media concede "truth squadding" to the Democrats anyway? And how were they doing on that score? So should Chait be so surprised that a bunch of upstart populists rose up to try to fill these kinds of duties (that TNR abdicated during the war)? His "corrected vectors of propaganda" formulation seems a bit crude to me. There *is* a difference between truth and propaganda. And somehow, I feel like Chait's article would sound different if he hadn't been a liberal hawk.
Oh, and he doesn't mention Josh Marshall's role in breaking the Gonzales story.
But anyway, maybe one of you guys might be interested in chiming in on this at some point...

The noise machine, while very good at getting us INTO a war seems currently very broken. Even CNN isn't playing along anymore.

I do not for the life of me understand why you people insist on ridiculing Mayor Giuliani. Here is what is obviously a very brave man, taking a stong and unequivocable stand against the serious menace of undocumented ferrets, many of whom come may come from a foreign country and may be allied with al Queda.
We live in a post 9/11 world, and if 9/11 taught us anything, it is that we can not afford to let psychopathic ferret sympathizers run loose in society. If a Democrat is elected, the ferrets will win. We can't let that happen!

I don't really understand why everyone says this is such a great article. The guy just basically keeps repeating the notion that Rudy is crazy and everyone thinks so. But he quotes like one person who thinks so besides himself, and he provides no real facts that we didn't already know about other than this ferret thing. Pretty thin.

Yeah, taking a big unruly city like New York and deciding that we needed to tackle the dangerous problem of ferrets was one of those moments when I think a lot of people - even those who had generally favorable opinions of Rudy - lifted their heads up and looked around and said "What the hell is this guy talking about?"
I mean, ferrets? Really?
There's a big difference between not liking something yourself and deciding that no one else should be permitted to enjoy it because you personally don't. Some people like anal sex, some don't - that doesn't mean it should be illegal (hi Ana!)
It's a very, very, big, fundamental difference. It's a difference you should understand if you want to be, oh, say, leader of a free nation.
And I don't think Rudy knows the difference.

And speaking of TAL. Those guys have had some very fine political stories over the last couple years. Their piece on Gore and the invention of the internets where they go back and intereview the class were Gore gave his supposed remarks--something no other journalist bothered with--is eye opening and should be required reading for all DC journalists.
