CNN Republican Debate Update...
My colleague Mark Halperin tells me that CNN has taken the clever step of getting the Florida Republican Party and Governor Charlie Crist to co-sponsor the CNN/YouTube Republican debate...Which will make it hard for the candidates to chicken out. Can't wait.

I'm looking forward to seeing the new format. Brownback should kick butt over the pre-programmed Rudy McRomneys.

Think you can just call 'em the Rudy Romneys now, B4B. The "Mc"s are dropping like flies.
[NOT ANTI-IRISHIST!].

There is a Constitutional crisis brewing over the refusal of the president to have a checks and balance system of government anymore. The GOP is going to approximately triple the number of f!libusters ever in a session of congress at their current pace....
....and you keep pushing this dopey non-story?

Mmmmm. Mark Halprin.

It's pretty clear that the top legal officer in the country has been lying under oath to Congress. The top Republican on the Judiciary Committee is openly talking about the possibility of criminal penalties. Does anyone at Time care to comment? What would it take to get you guys to comment on the Gonzales testimony?
Posted by Crust | July 25, 2007 3:49 PM
Did CNN guarantee that there would be no questions about the concerns of Black Ameicans in the debate? Because the GOP obviously didn't want to answer any questions about that, since they all (except for Tancredo) refused to show Up for an NAACP sponsored forum.
Of course, Joe will never ask this kind of question, because Joe never bothered to point out that the GOP IGNORED the NAACP. Maybe if the NAACP organized the people who serve him drinks and pass the cocktail weenies at DC social events -- and those people went on strike, Joe might bother to NOTICE that black Americans have legitimate concerns that Republican candidates should be asked about...
But who am I kidding....if "the help" went on strike, Joe would be giving us another anti-union screed...

LOL. How long do you give McCain? We've got a McCain Death Pool going at my office.

Why would Republicans ever "chicken out" on a CNN debate? Do you really think any sane person would do that? Do you really think CNN is somehow the equivalent of FOX? The notion that there was any such question is very, very unserious.

"What would it take to get you guys to comment on the Gonzales testimony?"
Move along....nothing to see here.....keep moving....don't hold up the line.....LOOK - SOMETHING SHINY!

"Do you really think CNN is somehow the equivalent of FOX?"
Yes, CNN leans at least as far left as Fox does right.

"What would it take to get you guys to comment on the Gonzales testimony?"
Maybe some actual facts instead of wild accusations would be a start. This is the biggest fishing expedition in years.

No CNN is balanced news not right wing propaganda lies for the neocons!
Posted by archie stanson | July 25, 2007 3:56 PM
"What would it take to get you guys to comment on the Gonzales testimony?"
either David Broder at the Post, or Ben Smith at the Politico, or John Dickerson at Slate commenting on how exposing Gonzales lies is bad for Democrats.
You can be sure that Jay, or Joe, or Ana marie would link to those pieces the moment they appeared....

What Crust said.
Joe, have your high-level secret sources alerted you to the fact that Alberto Gonzales testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday?
You might want to do some journamalism on that.

Blogs4Brownback: "Yes, CNN leans at least as far left as Fox does right."
*snickers*...Hey, at least you are clearly presenting a point and engaging in debate honestly...We prolly won't agree on much, but I appreciate the effort.
It's pretty sad when the presentation of fact and reality are considered 'left-leaning'...What does that leave right-leaning media outlets to present?
Truthiness?

have to say it is pretty astounding that blog allegedly devoted to politics has nothing to say about Abu G's un-freakin'-believable performance yesterday.
Even Fred Lieberman McCain Hiatt has called for the nitwit to be fired.

grape - the wingnut talk radio and Faux news are nothing but lies to the public but we netroots are bringing the TRUTH back to the people!

Gee, who wouldn't be afraid of all that journalistic firepower over at CNN? What do your other colleagues and fellow travelers, Cliff May, Bill Kristol, John Fund and David Brooks, say about the debate?
On the QT Joke, someone posted a video on YouTube you should see. The person wishes to remain anonymous, but rest assured he is very, very important Joke...a big player in DC with a title. He thinks your a great journalist Joke and rarely makes a decision without reading your column first. He'd like to know your sense of the situation...take a look and tell us what you think:

Blogs4Brownback, for an example of Gonzales lying consider his claim that he received "consensus" approval for some secret program other than the TSP -- in spite of Comey's objections -- from the Gang of Eight the same day he visited Ashcroft. One problem with this: apparently, the Gang of Eight weren't briefed on any such program other than the TSP.

I just love hearing what Mark Halperin thinks.
It saves me from reading Drudge.
And it's much more fun than facing a Constitutional crisis...

As the Presidential race gains speed global poverty is an issue that needs to be critically addressed by all potential candidates. Too much time is being spent on a candidate’s character and not enough on the issues. The United States has agreed to the Millennium Development Goals, plan that will put an end to global poverty by 2015. Unfortunately less than half of aid from the United States goes to the poorest countries where people earn less than $2 a day. Groups such as the Borgen Project are working to bring global attention to global poverty. For any candidate to receive recognition it is crucial that their foreign policy addresses these issues.
Posted by Kat P | July 25, 2007 4:50 PM
Kat - yes. I think as Democrats all of us in here would be willing to pay more taxes if the money went to stopping global poverty instead of to illegal wars for oil.

Or maybe he knows it but ain't yet willing to admit it.

Joe - I do not think that the GOP candidates were ever considering dropping out of the debbate. Instead, what this new development shows is that the GOP is now in a position to directly influence the question selection process whereas before this they had to rely on their 'friendlies' within CNN.
Sadly, this is another case of the GOP being unable to face the public unless it has some sort of firewall between them. Just like Bush's hand-picked 'Town Hall Meetings' and just like the installation of a male prostitute dressed up like a reporter into the White House Press Corp - an example of figurative symbolism made flesh.
It is too bad that CNN has done this. Why must everybody cave to the cowardice of the GOP?

"It is too bad that CNN has done this. Why must everybody cave to the cowardice of the GOP?"
terrapin...the CNN/You Tube debate was sponsored by the DNC as well. In this particular case, CNN isn't "folding" to anyone -- with the possible exception of their corporate parents.
Posted by p_lukasiak | July 25, 2007 5:22 PM
p_luk - Thanks for setting me straight.
Please disregard my previous post (except for the gay male prostitute thing which is true.)

"I think he is dead already and doesn't know it.'
Like Bruce Willis in "Sixth Sense"?
I have him down for mid October, after another weak quarter of fund-raising.

This speaks directly to what we were discussing in the previous thread about why the Republicans are obstructing any progress on those non-Iraq-War bills that you and I both want to see passed. The reason that you and I disagree is because you think that the bills are not being passed because of something that the Dems are doing or not doing and I think that they are not being passed because the GOP on is track to be the most obstructing Congress in history.
And why is the GOP doing this? So that they can score cheap political points based on lies about the Dem majority. They are trying to sow the seeds of the pox-on-both-houses meme in order to depress voter turnout come election time.
Please let us discuss this point some more. I would greatly appreciate it.

CNN long ago signed the 'Patriot Propaganda Pledge' of loyalty and purveyors of the fear factor.
Maybe 'Sparky' could get a secret web cam set up in the room where CNN picks the 'questions'. That would be fun. Besides the more that CNN covers their own, the less time they have to put real news on the air.
