The Ron Paul campaign announced, and other campaigns have confirmed, that CNN is moving the YouTube debate to another date, possibly in December.
Patrick Ruffini continues his passionate plea for Rs to stick with the format here. The push to participate has some surprising (to me) supporters, including Michelle Malkin and Mark Steyn.
Hugh Hewitt continues to pull in the other direction, and is picking off some support from Ruffini. To make his point, he played some of the already-submitted questions on his show last night. I haven't listened to them yet. I'm pretty sure they'll be ridiculous, but I wonder if focusing on the weirdos misses the point...

Cheney survived another hospitalization. We must achieve IMPEACHMENT before the next one.

"but I wonder if focusing on the weirdos misses the point..."
The Republicans are just being incredibly dumb about this. I thought the questions were refreshing, and humorous, two things I can't ever EVER remember saying about a political debate before. (Well, except for Lloyd Bentsen's smackdown of Quayle...that was entertaining, at least). In any event, the Republicans are stupid to wait until December. That leaves 4 months of "Republicans are afraid to answer questions from ordinary Americans'.
Honestly, this just seems like a move Bob Dole's campaign would have made. Well, since I'm a Democrat, I say "Go for it, dudes--look like the out of touch losers you actually are!"
Remember: Republicans are afraid to answer questions from ordinary Americans.

Americans no longer need to hear what repukes have to say. We know they love illegal wars, tax breaks for the rich, and they resist the right to immigration for the peoples.
All intelligent people in America have tuned out the GOP long ago. All we have to do now is replace the GOP with more Democrats and then move toward the wonderful place we will be.
Impeachment would speed this up and should still be our #1 priority.

I guess Obama is not immune to attacks from the vast right wing conspiracy either. Did you see how they framed one of his interns on a bogus assault charge?
The GOP fears Obama.
This is another example of GOP racism.

"but I wonder if focusing on the weirdos misses the point..."
I wonder if focussing on the YouTube question while ignoring the Gonzales perjury and the contempt citations against Miers and Bolten misses the point....
I mean, the irony doesn't get much thicker than AMC asking if "the point" is being missed...

IMPEACH GONZO!
IMPEACH ROVE!
IMPEACH CHENEY!
IMPEACH BUSH!
Those are the points!

Cox.
What's going on here? All these posts on a Saturday? What, performance evaluations are coming due and you guys have to make up for lost time, or trying to post Carney's little snarkfest off the front page?
Whatever, it's all good. Don't stop now. How 'bout that perjury?

Moved to maybe December. LOL Are they praying for a Petreaus September miracle, big Christmas bonuses, a dip in gas prices, Gates and Rice becoming the dynamic duo, Chertoff actually finding a terrorist, Darth dressed as Santa with Gonzo as his elf giving out Candy Canes at Walter Reed and a second Reagan coming? Did they have Nancy check with her astrologists?
Delay, deny and defend---heck maybe they can crash Diebold or filibuster to postpone Nov. 08.

Here's what may be a dumb question. Where do you find the video questions that have been submitted? I can't seem to find one spot on YouTube or CNN where they are gathered.
Posted by Brautigan | July 28, 2007 2:22 PM
Hewitt's concern about the tone of the questions and the deportment of the questioners is probably what the defections are about, though of course it's their own freako base that they fear being embarrassed by, not hostile questions from liberals.

GOP success depends on two things. 1)Getting much of the population to think that examining reality and following the Constitution are extreme and wacky ideas. The success of the GOP on this first objective can be seen in the continued employment of a variety of "serious" pundits and reporters. None of these individuals has ever authored anything as prescient, informative, or serious (in the real sense) regarding the Iraq war as Howard Dean's 2/17/03 speech. 2)Most importantly the GOP must cater to their base without making those communications apparent to the wider electorate. Every year thousands of anti-abortion activists gather in D.C. for the March for Life. Every year GOP presidents find it convenient for their schedules to require them to address this group by telephone: limited coverage, no images. GOP candidates and presidents typically snub NAACP events (Reagan famously vacationed rather than accept an NAACP invitation in 1980). Giuliani's association with the Ravenal family is a feature with the GOP base rather than a problem. If these associations or efforts were reported widely, however, most citizens would reject the GOP. A Youtube debate offers the possibility that the GOP base will collide with the general electorate. Only the base would stick with the GOP after tha event. See TPM for more.

You wonder if focusing on the weirdos misses the point.
If the point is to come up with a reason to skip the debate I'd say that it hits the point dead on.

Shouldn't we be discussing Hillareolas?
BTW, how are your breasts doing, Ana? I'd be happy to discuss.

Those dern Republicans sure are funny and all..
But to be Thoughtful and Serious here for a minute: how 'bout that rule of law? How's that been going? Balance of power? I hear it hasn't been feeling so hot.. must be that fascistic flu that's going around.
I read some story on page A20 the other day about the highest law enforcement officer - Albert something - in the country testifyin' before Congress.. it sounded kind of serious, but I'm sure it's nothing - y'all at Time would have your noses to the grindstone if there were anything to it, right?
Eh, whatever. It's all so uninteresting, anyway.

If we are lucky we can watch GONZOS IMPEACHMENT on YOUTUBE!
That would be great!
Posted by archie stanson | July 28, 2007 5:18 PM
The debate videos are here:
youtube.com/contest/RepublicanDebate
The problem with the vast majority of the questions is that they're even weaker than what MSM hacks such as those at this site would ask.
Hewitt should welcome these debates because, even though CNN might choose a few ringers for the GOP, they aren't going to choose the really difficult ones because that would help reveal just how much Wolf and Anderson are hacks.
Compare the videos they selected for the Dems to this one:
youtube.com/watch?v=Q_l4Lawj14A
Not only would asking that have put Hillary in a very difficult position, it would have made everyone wonder why Wolf and Anderson seem unable to ask anything like it.

Clinton, Obama, Romney, Thompson, and Giualiani are all bought and paid for by the same people Bush works for. Please do not vote for these people unless you enjoy wars abroad and regulating trade to benefit the elite a.k.a. Nafta, SPP. Real free trade requires NO regulation people! Vote for someone who actually cares about this country and is not bought and paid for. Ron Paul 2008.
Posted by Forty2 | July 29, 2007 8:56 PM
Ron Paul is a neocon doo doo head.
Hillary is the only good choice.
Vote Hillary or don't bother voting at all!
Posted by archie stanson | July 29, 2007 9:49 PM
Archie, calling Ron Paul a Neo-con shows clearly that you have no idea what you are talking about. You try this revolutionary idea...its called reading.

What's so surprising about INTERNET bloggers like Michelle Malkin being in support of a debate with questions from the INTERNET?
Nice bias you just admitted to having.
Oh but I'm sure it doesn't affect your policy decisions at all.
Posted by Rip | July 29, 2007 11:09 PM
Anyone who is not a Democrat is a neocon Paleo. DUH!
Ron Paul is your ralph nader. Useless and pointless.
Hillary laughs at Ron Paul and his supporters and so do I.
Posted by archie stanson | July 29, 2007 11:54 PM
Archie you are very misguided. Hillary is another corporate shill. She does not care about you or me. Why do you want that for you leader? Why not vote for someone that has convictions and actually cares about the country. She is going to sell out our country to globalism just like her husband did. Do you know what NAFTA is? If you want free trade why not have NO restrictions and let the market decide? These programs are the opposite of that. They only benefit corporate elite and screw you and our families. Please find this out for yourself. That is just the beginning of what Hilary is going to do. Not to mention open the boarders for anyone to come across. Also Archie, I am not convinced you even what a neo conservative is. If you think everyone that is not a dem is a neocon than you are not even worth arguing with. Ron is certainly not a neocon my friend. Please do you research.

Has anyone here moved an important event because one or two blowhards on the guest list said they wouldn't come?
YouTube and CNN need to stick to their original format, schedule and date and hold the debate with Ron Paul, John McCain, Tommy Thompson and whoever else wants to show up. Scr*w Giuliani, Romney, and the other cowards.
Posted by musicmax | July 30, 2007 10:29 AM
This is just another attempt by the Republican elite to avoid ANY contact whatsoever with the average American voter. Bush has no idea what real Americans feel about him or his administration, nor do most of the current candidates, because they follow the same Bush campaign strategy of only allowing loyal supporters into campaign events. How can you win over any voters if the only people you allow to see you in person are those who already support you?
Heaven forbid these candidates ever have to answer real questions. Why do you think none of the debates have been moderated by a real journalist willing to ask the real questions. When Jim Lehrer starts asking the questions, I'll start watching the debates.
Posted by Grammar-Nazi | July 30, 2007 10:44 AM
Yes to Hillary!
No to Ron Paul.
Libertarians are fallen Democrats.
Rejoin the one true faith.
Support Hillary.
Vote for Hillary or don't bother voting...
Posted by archie stanson | July 30, 2007 4:04 PM
Archie you obviously cant form any argument. Why not actually look into what your candidate is going to do and what the ramifications will be? Do you not care? You are obviously a troll. Keep blindly following to your demise.
Freedom and Liberty for all!

While, overall, I'm extremely pleased with the debates - I do think that CNN/YouTube made mistakes in selecting the lineup of chosen questions.
Women make up 54 percent of the population, 55 percent of registered voters and 60 percent of the electorate.
In all recent elections, women have outvoted men (in terms of both turnout rates and actual numbers) in every racial and ethnic group - African American, Latino, Asian/Pacific Islander, and white.
So, when CNN/YouTube/Google selected only 24% of the questions as female questions - they created a tremendous credibility and gender gap with the majority of the electorate.
Please read my recent blog entry -
