TNR Critic Turns Out to Be Something of a Faker Himself
Media Matters is having quite the Wonkette-esque week. First, they obsessed about obsessing over breasts.* Now: gay porn. Even better: Republican gay porn. No, wait for it, it gets better: Republican gay porn star and possible crook who was recently held out to be a paragon of virtue. It would be difficult to make up an ending to the "Scott Thomas affair" as insane and hysterical as this:
In an effort to undermine a New Republic article by Army Pvt. Scott Thomas Beauchamp about alleged inappropriate conduct by U.S. troops in Iraq, an article by Weekly Standard reporter Matthew Goldfarb relied on Marine Cpl. Matt Sanchez as the only military source identified by name but did not reveal facts that weigh on the credibility of Sanchez's attacks on The New Republic article: that Sanchez, whose website describes him as a "Marine Reservist" who is "[p]resently in Iraq interviewing the troops," has reportedly been under investigation by the Marines over allegations that he bilked private donors out of $12,000 for a deployment to Iraq he never made and that he apparently once worked as a male escort. He has also admitted to having been in gay porn films, a fact he has acknowledged "leaving ... off my curriculum vitae."
Yeah. Smart.
*And I mean that in the best way possible.
UPDATE: More weirdness here. Thanks, Xeno.
Also, apologies for the sloppy writing (sloppier than usual). Was running into a meeting and hit return without thinking. Cleaned up to, among other things, show that he's just an ALLEGED crook.

Aren't all republicans gay now?
What I find interesting is that they spend all this time on Scott Thomas, yet ignore the Tillman debacle. I'd love to see some good military blogging on that mess, but it somehow falls off their radar screen. Too busy watching gay porn and bilking little old ladies for their pretend deployments I guess...

Umm, I don't think Media Matters was "obsessed about obsessing over breast". It seemed pretty obvious that they were doing what they always do -- highlighting the ludicrous topics that the national media are themselves obsessed with, usually to the detriment of actual news.
Media Matters pointing out that national news outlets were obsessing about Clinton's boobs doesn't make MM obsessed with anything, other than shoddy "journalism" or more correctly, journamalism.
Maybe you could do some reporting about how this is ALWAYS the way the Radical Right reacts to stuff they don't like. Also you could, you know, point out that they GET AWAY WITH IT, time and time again. What price does Malkin have to pay for getting the reporter story wrong? Nothing, that's right.
But if Media Matters had gotten such a story wrong, I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that all we'd ever hear about them after that is that they 'don't have any credibility after being so wrong'. Funny how that never seems to affect the mouthpieces of the Radical Right.
That this guy has ethical and personal issues that take away from his credibility will not matter one iota to the Radical Right. And of course, if you bring it up to them (a la Guckert) they'll claim YOU'RE the one gay-bashing. Like the good Authoritarians that they are, they'll keep their eyes on the prize, in this case that Beauchamp lied or whatever the talking points of the day are.
But you can be sure that it will be Beauchamp who will end up being vilified further, rather than Sanchez getting any flak. Guaranteed.

Matt Sanchez's secret life as porn star Rod Majors/Pierre LaBranche was exposed months ago. A blogger recognized him from some of his movies (like Touched By An Anal), after which Sanchez admitted his past and attempted to claim victimization. Radar Online had a long article about him: http://radaronline.com/features/2007/03/matt_sanchez_1.php
Sanchez is the perfect spokesman for the repugs, if you think about it. He fits right in. They're the party of Mark Foley, Diaper Dave Vitter and Jeff Gannon now, not the party of Lincoln.
Posted by Xeno | August 2, 2007 3:33 PM
So, they're "allegations" according to the excerpt, yet Wonkette is calling him a "crook"? Maybe this site needs (among other things) an editor. How about someone who works for a junior high school paper? Someone of that age could relate to the posts.
Posted by TLB | August 2, 2007 3:33 PM
I think you mean "the Scott Thomas affair, manufactured and sustained by wingnuts."
Shouldn't they be the ones being ridiculed for "obsessing?"
Posted by Acid | August 2, 2007 3:49 PM
The Radar article quoted by Xeno is interesting.
Not sure how one can be in gay porn by adamantly deny being either gay or bisexual. "I'm not gay! I just had sex with other men!"
As usual, though, he didn't understand that the left pointing out he was in gay pr0n isn't the issue -- it's trying to hide that fact while working with a political party that hates gay people.

Matt Sanchez bio*, if anyone is interested. Looks like he's changed the target of his hustling from gays to right whingers...more money in it, I guess.
Oh, and TLB?...It was the USMC that said that Sanchez inappropriately solicited those funds**...Ana is accurate in her description. From the article:
"[Marine Corps Reserve Col. Charles] Jones wrote that Sanchez’s participation in porn films was part of the investigation, but that two of the three allegations against him involved lying 'to various people, including but not limited to, representatives of the New York City United War Veterans Council and U-Haul Corporation' about deploying to Iraq at the commandant’s request.
'Specifically, you wrongfully solicited funds to support your purported deployment to Iraq' by coordinating a $300 payment from the UWVC and $12,000 from U-Haul, Jones wrote."
What happens to Sanchez after this point is up to some Brigadier General...
Oh, and this counts as (yet another) rebuttal to your crap.

Ana - At what point will an intrepid reporter take it upon his/her self and print a story on the tendency for conservatives to associate themselves with deeply-closeted angry homosexuals and gay male prostitutes.
Sure, one might expect to see the topic broached when an actual gay male prostitute was discovered in the White House Press Corps after having been placed there by conservative leaders. [To this day no better metaphor has been devised to explain the lack of journalistic skepticism in the early Bush years.] And then there was Mark Foley, that preacher guy, Ken Mehlman, Scott McClellan, well, you get the picture. I am sure that there is a better list out there somewhere.
So what is going on here? Why are they so fixated and yet so hateful? To say that they are self-loathing of their own inner urges would be cliche but...
I think a column in the print version of Time magazine would go a long way to easy the pain of these torutred, conflicted, closeted Republicans, and once they are open and honest with themselves about their sexuality then they won't be reduced to selling their rump for rides or soliciting head in highway rest stops.

What's stupid is that TNR's critics seized on the now very old Stephen Glass case in order to go after this story with no evidence. As if TNR's guard hasn't been well up ever since Glass. As if they'd make the same mistake again. It'd be like me barging into the new office of the CEO of Tyco and expecting to find that he's been doing everything Dennis Kozlowski did. Not gonna happen.

You know archie, a liberal wouldn't have a problem being gay, so spoofing me to suggest that I am, is hardly the damning insult you think it is. I gave it a shot once, I sucked a dick...not my cup of tea. Sure, I prefer the back door too, however I don't seem to feel that way when the potential recipient is male. If I were so inclined, I would come out, and you know as well as I, my liberal friends and family would still love me and accept me. Could you say the same thing? Of course not. You have to bottle those feelings up, as well as the self-loathing you must feel due to your inability to muster the courage to enlist and fight for your country, in the way all you action movie heroes did. You have an image of what a 'real man' is supposed to look and act like, but you can't meet this criteria, and it tears at you deeply. This kind of pent up rage and self-hate is why so many conservative 'men' need to humiliate themselves(diapers) to attain any sexual satisfaction.
In conclusion: I'm not gay...not that there's anything wrong with that.

I have been sexually attracted to men ever since, I don't always wear diapers when I have sex though, but sometimes there is no substitute for wearing diapers, making in my diapers and then having a big strong man like Fred Thompson hold me and make me feel safe. What a man! The only woman I've ever been attracted to is Brownback girl, there's just something about her...yummy!

Here's a good example of conservative courage:
'Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott (R-Miss.) ominously advised Thursday that Congress needed to pass changes to terrorist surveillance laws before leaving for the August recess and warned that otherwise “the disaster could be on our doorstep.
Further demonstrating his counterterrorism sagacity, when asked if people should leave Washington, D.C., during the month of August, Lott replied that "I think it would be good to leave town in August, and it would probably be good to stay out until September the 12th."

Who is Arch Stanton and who is Archie Stanton?
Posted by Archibald Stanton | August 2, 2007 10:12 PM
It strikes me there's two issues here - one being that The Weekly Standard story is thinly sourced - Sanchez was a Marine, and had no involvement with Beauchamp or his Army unit until his recent visit so how can he alone be at all substantive - and a separate issue about his veracity. On the former topic, it seems to me the issue rests with the Standard, not Sanchez. On the latter topic, I wrote about the Sanchez revelations on my blog (www.nycweboy.com) when they came out, and I've had the opportunity to correspond with Sanchez as a result. I don't agree with his politics, but some of this is simply too much - yes, he was in porn (and gay pron at that), but that's hardly a disqualifier for being able to comment knowledgeably on military issues as an ex-soldier, which he also is. Yes, porn and hooking are dicey professions of questionable morals, but the Scarlet Letter some people want to brand Sanchez with (including you, Ana, which makes me sad) seems out of line with the liberalism on issues like sex, sexuality and things like porn that I learned. Without knowing a lot about the financial allegations, I find it hard to believe that I man I talked to - who does have a certain fundamental decency to him - would deliberately bilk people out of money (and, a he's in Iraq now, I'd guess money given for that purpose might be being used for it). Yes, it's fun to chuckle about the pornstar and the tackiness of the industry and muse on Sanchez's own issues with discussing his sexuality. But using his history as a sex worker to impeach his ability in other areas seems as sexist and wrong as giving promiscuous women a hard time over being loose. He did it, he doesn't do it now, and he's done other thing. Tell me again why his porn career matters in this instance.
Posted by weboy | August 2, 2007 10:17 PM
Here archie, is proof that once you've come out, the pressure on your brain eases and you are able to think once again. Example, Andrew Sullivan:
"What Americans want are the benefits of empire, without the work of empire. If you can't do the work, you shouldn't start."
Posted by arch stanton | August 2, 2007 10:18 PM
"I find it hard to believe that I man I talked to - who does have a certain fundamental decency to him - would deliberately bilk people out of money"
Sounds like a lot of the descriptions of Ken Lay I heard a few years ago. So I take it he didn't hold you up when you met, or burglarize your apartment? I guess he's clean then.
His gay porn past is germane because he has aligned himself w/ the most rabidly anti-gay people in the country Its also relevant because if Matt Sanchez wants to start pointing his finger at others and accuse them of being dishonest, then he better be damn sure to be clean in the honesty department. He was not. He was called on it.
Now, tell us what a great guy Roy Cohn was.

Something else that's strange about Matt Sanchez. I saw it mentioned on a blog that he's been vandalizing Wikipedia articles, including Max Blumenthal's. I checked the edit history on the Blumenthal bio, and sure enough Sanchez made a dozen self-serving edits (posting as Bluemarine) that included references to his gay porn career.
He also tried to add trivia about his porn films to his own WP bio.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Matt_Sanchez#Call_of_Wild_and_Montreal_Men
"Call of the Wild" and "Montreal Men" were both in French. And his role in "Idol Country" was entirely in Spanish. Wow!
Would someone who wants to be taken seriously call attention to information like this? It should be obvious to everyone but the most rabid wingnut that Sanchez is trying to cash in on the controversy -- just like his idol Ann Coulter.
And then there's that facercise thing...

It includes a discussion forum.
