McCain Calls for MoveOn.org to be "Thrown Out of the Country"
At a crowded rally at a VFW hall in Hudson, NH last night, McCain -- again -- used the MoveOn "Betray Us" ad as a emotional crowd-pleaser. It was a boisterous event, so when I thought I heard McCain call for MoveOn to be "thrown out" -- and then be drowned out by applause, I first went to the campaign and asked what the candidate said. They were at a loss as well, but said it seemed highly unlikely that he'd call for something so harsh. ("It goes against everything he believes in.") Today, a colleague from CBS News with better equipment played a tape from the rally. McCain did, indeed, let his passions run ahead of the First Amendment. The tape is clear. He said:
"It's disgraceful, it's got to be retracted and condemned by the Democrats and MoveOn.org ought to be thrown out of this country, my friends."
The campaign has its own take on the quote:
Senator McCain, like most Americans, is appalled by the MoveOn.org ad. Last night he expressed his outrage in words that did not convey his intended meaning. What he meant to say was that MoveOn's smear of General Petraeus' character should have no place in the American political debate.
There is, of course, a significant difference between exile and criticism.
UPDATE: CBS has the video.

When McCain uses the words "My friend(s)" he is always in the middle of saying something very nasty.
But that's okay, he just got carried away.
"I'm pandering to my base." John McCain on the media.

What with the crypto-fascist campaign logo McCain chose this time around and his buddying up to Bush, does it come as any surprise he's officially gone over to the neo-Stalinist wing of the party?

He didn't get "carried away". He knew exactly what he was doing. He was catering his message to his audience, the base, the folks who would, if they could, kick all liberals out of their country or string them up as traitors simply for being against the war.
I once had respect for McCain. No more. He's whored himself out to Bush and to the base...and they still don't like him all that much!
And, personally, I think proposing that we "kick out" tens of thousands of American citizens simply for voicing their opinions and excercising their First Amendment rights is WAY worse than implying that Petraeus might lie or provide misleading testimony. The man would treat illegal aliens better than MoveOn.
Pathetic - both what he said and the man himself.

Amazing, just amazing.
Ann Coulter proposes death to Supreme Court justices, editors of major US newspapers, slanders widows of 9/11 men, and she has a right to say whatever she wishes.
An independent group pays for an ad in a newspaper and Free speech? What free speech?
Do any of his BFF in the press corp point out that Rush said it about Hagel and in August some generals were mentioned in the Times of London calling Petraeus that? Just so St. John has the big picture.
And, as you noted earlier, Boehner just misspoke.
Pathetic.

Where should we send Adm. Fallon, head of Centcom? He called Gen. Petraeus an "a**-kissing little chickensh**."
Should we rend him to a rival country that might engage in torture, maybe Syria, or to an ally, like maybe Tonga or Saudi Arabia, both of whom are key parts of the conflict in Iraq? There's a 36-nation force there, don'tcha know.

Why is this little turd treated like a hero. He was a prisoner of war. He got caught. He isn't a hero. How do we know he didn't talk? How do we know he isn't ready to go off at any second?
Posted by Proud Liberal Vet | September 14, 2007 5:15 PM
Naaah, just some of that straight talk. Plus, I have it on good authority that he made the comment without planning, and without informing his staff beforehand. He's just that kind of guy.
How are the donuts and such on his tour bus? Is he keeping y'all entertained with his stories and perpetual geniality? He's a great guy, you know, and it must be quite an honor for a pup like yourself to be on that bus with him, seeing the great, straight shooting, no surrendering, man, warts and all.
Posted by Hoplite | September 14, 2007 5:18 PM
So?
The faux outrage of McCain on the a$$-ki$$ing express. We can forgive him if his knees are sore and jaw is tired. The applause will be even louder if he promises to use the torture techniques he learned at the hands of the Vietcong on Iraqiis. And I'm sure he'll be willing to oblige.
Posted by Anonymous | September 14, 2007 5:19 PM
Proud Liberal Vet, that is way out of line. The guy withstood torture while he was a POW. He still can't lift his arms above his head.
He's sold out every principle I believed him to have in 2000, but there's no questioning his service. Come on.

At one time, the idea of McCain / Powell was one of the best "new" combinations out there! I respected both for their moderation and sincerity as well as providing leadership and sensible decision-making.
See how far they've fallen!
And to think I would have voted Republican...
Scary, huh?
Posted by Keven Bennett | September 14, 2007 5:24 PM
"but there's no questioning his service. Come on."
He and his extremist friends have no problem questioning the service of liberals.
He can f*ck himself.
Posted by Proud Liberal Vet | September 14, 2007 5:26 PM
Yeah, Proud Liberal Vet. Out of line. I think McCain acted honorably as a POW, and wouldn't think less if he did talk. As for hero, it doesn't really matter to me if McCain was caught, Tillman shot by the enemy or friendly fire, or the folks who wrote the editorial for the NYT's truck overturned in the Green Zone or from an IED. It happened because they served, which is more than I can say for most of the architects of this failure.
However, losing limbs in Vietnam doesn't give you a pass from the DC pundits, so I see no reason why McCain shouldn't get a little for his far more cowardly actions today.

I don't know what's happened to him. I do not know whether he actually was considering Powell, but I really had respect for both, because at the time he was hitting issues on the head that his compatriots were sweeping under the table.
I also respected the fact that he saw action and suffered for his country, so I don't know why he should be going so far to give himself a "personality transplant".
Is it raw ambition? He was building a base of his own, it seems, but this recent change has seen him jettison the solid core of support he had to try to appeal to something that just wasn't in his nature.
What do you think? Do you have any guesses or insights?

Posted by Sad in AZ | September 14, 2007 5:39 PM
Where were all these media people when Republicans were accusing Harry Reid of aiding and abetting the enemy? Denny Hastert said exactly that and nobody said boo. Moveon and the Democrats ought to run those clips of Republicans using words like "traitor" and "aiding and abetting the enemy" everytime these idiots cry about the Petraeus add. If they don't like nasty rhetoric questioning someones patriotism and love of country, they should practice a little of what they preach.

Selective indignation. A once proud and honorable warrior has now prostituted himself on the altar of political expediency. I have said this before and say it again. McCain has transitioned from a principled man to a panderer. He will never become President. He is a shadow of his former self and I pity him. I appeal to MoveOn not to say anything against McCain. He can't take it. Oh, by the way, freedom of speech is alive and well - perhaps not on the XXXExpress.

I can't understand why people don't understand that General Petraeus is a sacred cow.
As a sacred cow everything that Petraeus says is the truth.
No one can ever question anything Petraeus says, because Petraeus is a sacred cow.
If you do question the sacred cow, Petraeus, you are a traitor to the country, and ought to leave.
I think that is about it.

This is Exhibit A. If [Dem prez candidate] had called for [some right-wing group] to be "thrown out of the country," that Democrat's comments would be BREAKING NEWS!!!!!!11 on every channel.
Everything Democrats say is immediately placed under a microscope, but nothing McCain or Boehner say gets any scrutiny at all. Why the double standard? Is it because Baron von Limbaugh has been raving about those evil liberalsss in the media for two decades?
Boehner calls 3,000+ American deaths in Iraq a "small price" and....the media doesn't seem to have noticed. He backpedalled, saying that he was referring to the $$$ spent, but his words clearly referred to spilled blood as well.
This is a guy who will cry and complain about funding welfare, Social Security, education, infrastructure, stuff that actually benefits American citizens, but a trillion dollars in what may as well be foreign aid to Iraq is chump change?
The Bushies can't rebuild New Orleans, but rebuilding Baghdad takes priority over everything else. Why?

I respect Senator McCain's military service. It does not serve us well to call that into question. What would serve us well is for everyone to flood his online campaign site with the demand to know where he was when the Swift Boat group was spreading disgusting lies about Senator Kerry's service, and suggest he not be quite so hypocritical in his denounciations.
If enough people - supporters (I am not one) and those opposed to him - speak up, I believe he'll drop this - as would all the other candidates and Republicans who have latched onto this ad as their latest diversionary tactic, if THEIR phone lines, email inboxes and websites were overflowing about this issue.
We need to make our voices heard outside the choir loft that is the blogosphere - no one is really paying attention to us here.

This entire persona he's had since he lost in 2000 has been such a counterintuitive move on McCain's part, I wonder if he'll look back on this period as his own personal Perot moment.
Calling for the removal of websites is SO anti-Libertarian I wonder if he is tossing and turning in bed, or whether he's proud of himself for getting the crowd all riled up....

Nobody should vote for me. I am a traitor to the principles I stood for in 2000. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a bathroom appointment with Larry Craig

I AM proud. I AM an American, and I AM proud of our troops. THEY have to do whatever ignorant, cruddy job you Neocons have put them to regardless of truths or not. BUT...
What's a "pinko"? What's a "liberal"? Do you even know what they are?
The commenters on that website are far harsher on fellow Americans than MoveOn EVER was to Patreaus. When patreaus entered politics, he became a target.
Don't forget, Anonymouse, I've been around for a good long time and one thing I really detest is the idea that it's ok to "loath" or "hate" fellow Americans because their views don't match with yours.
And, in THIS country, I am glad to say, BECAUSE of the durability of the First Amendmant, YOU get to reap what you've sewn for the past 30 years.
Taste the waste, Anonymouse, because it's your own...

McCain slammed swiftboat. He still does, whenever it comes up.

Campaign finance reform, one of McCain’s central causes, is censorship. That is the point. I happen to agree with the bill. You certainly don't have to, but is silly to accuse him of being inconsistent about this issue when he authored a bill designed to eliminate groups like this.
He has never been shy about it. When the bill passed, neither were Democrats who voted with him. Unlike McCain, Dems are just inconsistent about it. They attack conservative special interests, whereas McCain attacks all of them.

Can we all get this indignant the next time a candidate talks about watching out for the working family - just before retiring to their mulit-million dollar home? (and most of them are multi-millionaires) Senator McCain has been consistent in his efforts to close loopholes that enable groups like MoveOn (and their conservative counterparts) to have so much influence. I'm sure that there would be no outcry on this board if he had said that Focus on the Family should be thrown out of the country. In fact, many that have posted criticism here would be singing his praises. It appears that it's only considered censorship if an organization that you like is the one singled out for criticism.
If MoveOn were serious about appealing to anyone outside of their base (yes that phrase applies to both ends of the political spectrum) they would have used a different headline in their ad. Their choice of an unnecessarily inflammatory headline shows that they are more concerned about fanning the flames (and raising money from the base) than working towards a meaningful consensus on a brutally difficult problem. Think about that the next time you are tempted to attack the Republicans for using wedge issues to raise money from their base. I personally think the tactic, whichever side uses it, is disgusting and shows a lack of true ideas and vision.

Ben,
Read a book?
Read the posts.
As a matter of fact, it isn't even an issue. My comment applies to the right wingers as a hole (not misspelled!).
Read up farther on the posts for my views on the "former" McCain.
Posted by Keven Bennett | September 15, 2007 2:26 PM
JM,
I can tell from your comments that you are on the right, which is ok, but...
I have a sneaking hunch that the McCain you speak of has skewed so far off the course of his previous (and true) personality that his impartiality vis the Right vs Left is no longer to be trusted.
In any case, I have to admit that I don't have a problem with people like MoveOn doing what they are doing. It's not because I want political debate to dive to new lows, it's a more basic couple of things:
The Right has gotten away for 30 years with the tactic of smearing anyone and anything by slapping the "liberal" tag on some Americans and then calling them collectively "traitors", "scum", or far, FAR worse. They were even able, in the midst of an election, bersmirch the service record of a fellow American (see numerous posts above) and, wonder of wonders, get away with it!
Now, finally after 30 years, capped by the last 7 years of total buffoonery, right wingers get to taste their own waste.
Yes, I'll admit to the basic appeal of revenge, and hopefully, following this, we can whip the weasels on both sides back into their borrows.
In the meantime, I, for one, am ENJOYING the heck out of it. You righties havve earned it!

-Keven

Keven:
The bigger problem is that right wing smear tactics cheapened the right as much as it did the left. This is not the left getting revenge on the right (Rove was about as nasty a campaigner as we have seen) but that they are making the same mistakes. Right wing sleaze may have hurt the left in terms of losing elections, but it hurt the right by creating a political environment that drove policy despite the will of constituents.
No one really gains when groups like moveon and swiftboat take over political discourse. One side might win the election because of it, but they no longer hold the reigns of the government.

Ben -
I agree with you, I have a purely selfish reason for the enjoyment of the newest paradigm, and it does contribute to the degeneration of political discourse.
After years of rightist cr*p, from the Angry White Male in the '80s besmirching the accomplishments and interests as well as character of minority Americans through the latest Rovian discourse, I'm glad to see the tables turn.
In a bow to the fact that I am being selfish and that I recognize it, I try to limit my blasts to responses to those who fire first. That way, I have some minute level of justification for it.
A right-winger would just say:
Get a life!
or
Stop whining!
Posted by Keven Bennett | September 15, 2007 3:23 PM
As an added comment, I would also say that the moment I see that the political discourse on the left degenerate into a KOS KIDZ-style mumbo-jumbo rhetoric, I will probably take my leave.
I don't want this country ruled by extremists on either side.
Posted by Keven Bennett | September 15, 2007 3:27 PM
How do you "throw" a website "out of the country?"
It's easy, just grab the connecting "tubes" firmly, whirl it around your head a couple of times and let it fly. Hat tip to Senator Stevens.
Posted by Shep2020 | September 15, 2007 3:43 PM
Isn't McCain a third-generation Navy man?
He should have a little sit-down with Admiral Fallon.
Will he recommend throwing Fallon out the country?
Posted by goatchowder | September 15, 2007 4:04 PM
Mr. Madison, Sir -
Respectfully, you are wrong. Wrong, as in wrong. I thought the MoveOn ad, while correct in spirit, used a clever play on words that was inappropriate. Nevertheless, far worse is the usual wail of faux indignation arising from those masters of invective, the right-wing.
As far as McCain goes, I can't speak for anyone else, but I would be just as angry at any presidential candidate, even one who I otherwise supported, who said that Focus on the Family "should be thrown out of the country." I don't like Focus on the Family, I don't like what they are doing to the country that they and I both inhabit, I do not understand their way of thinking, and I wish that they didn't exist. Nevertheless, I respect their right as Americans to hold the opinions that they do and would not "sing the praises" of anyone who suggested otherwise. Please provide us with some example of a leader on the left who has ever made the kind of remarks denying freedom of speech to those holding a different point of view that are so common on the right.

Back in the days of the "Angry White Male", they hid behind their moderators on their bb's to hurl racial slurs (they do still - witness the recent Don Imus brouhaha), then call anyone who called them on it "divisive" or "playing the race card" and that they are just being "honest" or "shooting from the hip". That was the '80s and early '90s.
Then they evolved into furious mob of anti-government activists and haters, putting up websites openly advocating killing government workers and in some cases, posting hit lists. Timothy McVeigh drew legitimacy from the "Patriot Movement" at this time, and he was emboldened to kill 192 Americans in a burst of hatred that was reflected in many Republican websites. I remember it well. The day after the ERM building was destroyed, most of those sites abruptly disappeared. THAT was the Republicans of the mid '90s.
A few years ago, around 9/11, they celebrated by hurling insults at "liberals" like "traitor" and "terrorist", or worse. Catching them out would get you the rejoinder:
"Get A Life", or "Whiner!".
You can tell who they are, because they are the first to sling about the word "liberal" or some other now meaningless epithet at the rest of the posters.
I've left out the looniness of Pat Robertson and the religious right, who might be closer to Ayatolla Khomeini than to any American for their wish to blur the distinction between church and state, but the right wing's recent history is the filthiest of the filthy.
Now, they seem to think they are somehow, older, wiser, and more knowledgable than everyone else. They point their fingers at the rest of the posters, but judging by how their finger stinks, I can guess where it was...
Finally, after 30 years, the paradigm has changed, and I won't pass up the opportunity to remind those *@# of their own history.
I challange ANYONE to dispute their history, and remind them that "what goes around comes around" is a caveat that is still very mich alive!
And I, for one, am enjoying it...

The angry white guys got what they deserved at the polls last time 'round and will likely see more losses this time too. Many of them are pond scum. However, I do agree with the point that the Dems are now repeating their tactics and will thus make many of the same mistakes now that they are in power. From my perspective I live in one of those "liberal basition" states, where I see exactly the same kind of intolerance for views that are not from the left that we see nationally from the party of angry white guys.
Hypocrisy pervades politics in this country (go figure) which is why I am a "small c" conservative (smaller, less invasive government -no pun intended). McCain used to stand for that, I'm still trying to figure out whether some of his positions and statements are just bad political judgement or real changes in thinking. I'm inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

Someone 40 miles away could toast their bread just by holding it up facing the flash. Neat, huh?
You might now see that I have very, VERY little respect for those Noeconservative right-wingers I speak of.
To JM:
Yes, very true, there is liberal intolerance too. I'm against illegal immigration, which entitles me to the tag of "racist" or "xenophobe" on that side and nothing could be farther from the truth.
However, it is good that their history should be known - nothing like it in recent history has ever reared it's ugly head like this in the history of thie country since the early 1900's.

No brain power except for a few "leaders" who are clearly leading the moronic posters around by the nose, sorta like dittoheads, don't you think?
Wow, to think, in Jurassic Park, heards of Gallamimus in tight flocks changed directions almost simultaneously, as if on cue. A wonder of paleontological sluething some of which has actual support in the fossil record!
The point is, I think dittoheads are worse off than the dinosaurs, and they're all dead (exc for birds)! I have a sneaking hunch that a heard of dittoheads would turn as if on cue, just like Gallamimus, but would run smack into a wall painted blue like the sky...
Watch out for that rock from space, Anonymouse!

I agree that McCain has definitely changed. He used to be a man of principle, and I also voted in the 2000 Republican Primaries for him. I knew there was a good chance of a Republican winning and I wanted a say in which Republican it was. Anyway, he is not the same man he was even 2 years ago. I think Bush let it be known to him that if he ever wanted to be elected, he better get on the party band-wagon. It's such a shame. He was such an honorable man at one time.

Republicans used the images of John Kerry and Max Cleland when they were swiftboating two true American war heroes, but MoveOn.org can't use the image of Petraeus, who sold out the armed forces because he wants to run as the Republican candidate for president in 2012. Republicans are such hypocrites. Why is it ok for Republicans to lie and slander Democrats, while MoveOn.org is vilified for an ad that tells the truth?
Posted by mmeyer | September 17, 2007 1:19 AM
The rhetoric of the neocons is resembling the Nazi party more and more every day. Listen to some early Nazi party speeches and you'll see a chilling similarity in the vitriol and extremist suggestions on dealing with dissent.
Of course when confronted they always say "we were only using a metaphor, wink wink, nudge nudge".

Next, there’s the special Sale link. This is open every Friday, and ONLY on Fridays.
You can find the same good discounts here as you would in hidden Deals, although some
Fridays you can really get lucky and make off like an Amazon bandit - I’ve seen discounts
there as low as 75% off sticker price.
