Talkback
Did we get it right?

TIME's Person of the Year is the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or ill, and embodied what was important about the year. We've had our say, now it's your turn:
Do you agree or disagree with TIME's choice?
Who should we have chosen?
Who gets your vote for Person of the Year?
Posted by Sally Savage in Grand Blanc
Oh please! Cleverness, deception and out right hate for democracy is not a value that is valued by the majority of the people of the United States! I am very disappointed in your choices. So it really doesn't matter who you select, just so it gets press. Well, you should know who gets press and why.
Posted by Vincent Pagnoni in Glen Allen, VA
Well, can't say I'm really surprised by your choice - I figured Al Gore was a lock for this with the year he has had but at least he was a runner up. I recently started a Time subscription after much thought and after just two issues I no longer bother reading it, I can't get through all the left wing/Democrat nonsense and support that you blindingly provide. So while I may choose to be ignorant by not reading Time, you choose to demonstrate your ignorance of the world we live in by putting it into printed word.

Another Pathetic choice, naturally, from a pathetic liberal magazine.
Why don't you pack up your stuff and move to another country where you'll be Happier...
Suggestion- Russia!

Your comment
Very obvious who reads Time magazine...the winner, and first and third runners up...all socialist communist in their core beliefs. It is a sad day in America when these men drape the cover of a leading magazine as heroes and idols for our young to look up to.

I disagree that Putin is chosen to be The man of the Year. you rewarded a person who is by far a symbol of corruption , who leads an aggressive governorship.
its lame and pathetic decision not to say -even dangerous act ,as for by giving a non-acceptable behaviour and ruling you legitimise ppl to act as such, all the more so had of states ..
Awful decision !!

Of course Putin had a dramatic effect on the world since becoming the leader of Russia, that will hold for some time, but you're comparing that with the possible (likely) disastrous effects that climate change will cause across the world for an indefinite time in the future? It was Al Gore who woke so many up to this fact, which he is why he was honored with part of the Nobel Prize. You seriously missed the big picture on this one.

I suggest that everyone who has a negative feeling towards Time's choice, go out and buy as many copies of the magazine at your local store as you financially can. At 5:00 pm central time, lets all burn the magazine, tape it and post it on You Tube. That is my plan. Lets get the word out.

My first impression, how can you pick such a miserable person? He is still a communist.
Why would you give him any attention, it just encourages bullies! Nothing noble in his spirit!
Al Gore has most affected us in so many ways, all positive. He was a good VP as you can be in that position, lost with grace although unfairly, and went on to continue his work concerning the world's environment. All noble examples that lift and give hope.
I believe you did this to be sensational, to sell your mag and that's a sell out to the people of the world. Shame on you, shame, shame, shame.

I think the general consensus of the people that responded to this article have it right. You don't have a clue.
Vladimir Putin has stepped back in time and done nothing but flex musle. It's the oil, that's the only reason Russia has once again become a big world player. However, he might well be the man to start WW III.
And then there is Al Gore, the green man. He is up to his eye brows in carbon credits and all that is about is making money.
Isn't this the guy that started the internet?

Number 1 and number 4 are communist leaders and your number 1 has just sent his first NUCLEAR shipment to IRAN! Not to mention they are the sole country blocking the independence of Kosovo. It's not their country and not their decision to make their decision to make, we didn't need England's permission and didn't even have the support of all the people in our own colonies but we still declared independence. And why did we do that? Because it is people's God-given right! Number 4, the communist leader of China...hmmm, yeah, common sense will tell you that is a horrible choice. Now how about your number 2, Al Gore. Well he tried to lay claim to the invention of the internet which still makes me laugh, and his whole global warming thing? Why is it that nobody is reporting the findings of NASA that indicate that global warming is WRONG!!!? Why will nobody report on that? Because the people who are behind the idea are the ones in power in this country for starters. Mr. Gore did not deserve the Nobel prize for something that is a farse, so take him off there too. And number 3 is a writer, absolutely no disrespect intended but she's a writer! How in the world does that qualify someone for any "Person of the Year"? Finally we get to a real choice on your list, Commanding General David Petraeus. He took the reigns of an extremely difficult war and is doing a superb job. Killings are down, which means peace is on the rise. Is it taking a long time? Yes it is but let's not forget something people, in this country we declared our independence in 1776 and we did not come up with a Constitution until 1787 (11 years!) and we had a lot of fighting of our own going on at the time. They seem to be doing pretty good in Iraq and the Chain of Command has plenty to do with that. Then again, so do the people at the bottom of that food chain, and so do the people back Home. If you have to choose someone from your list he seems like the logical choice, but...Here's an idea, "Person of the Year"---Americans! We stand up for other people, we take care of everybody else, and we stand up for what we believe in (whether I agree with you or not I respect you for having a backbone and at least choosing a side). So how about that one? Keep it in mind for next year...America...We're a hell of a "Person"!!!!!!Period, end of story.

If i can tell Time standerd for next year as follow:
Mr.W Bush,Castro or Arab Countery leaders.
They may choose Sadam Husain as unforgetable honorable man in history.

Time has really outdone itself. The choices: two tyrants who have worked tirelessly to line their own pockets while supressing human rights and democratic reforms; a flimflam man who has . . . hmmm . . . worked tirelessly to line his own pockets while living a well-chronicled, hypocritical life that is completely contradictory to the life he wants to force on you and me; a beloved author and huge commercial success; and an American war hero who is succeeding in an impossible situation despite incompetent leadership from the White House and weak-kneed undermining by the Democrat leadership. Being that this is Time, it should be no wonder that the "winner" is a Russian KGB tyrant.

Putin, a former head of the KGB, has a man poisoned to death in London, he sends weapons and advisors to Iran and Syria. to kill our troops and aids terrorist who continue to fire rockets into Israel on a regular basis. The fact is ; that information is never printed in your magazine proves that you and whom ever you claim is the "Man of the Year" are irrelevant. Lets see if Putin steps down after his term is over. Give the MOTY award to Walmart, since the income of Walmart is nearly as much as the entire Nation of Russia. They earned it, but since you favor Communist, and not Freedom you never would. If you printed Time in Russia, you would have to say he is the MOTY, or be shut down and controled like all of the State run media is in Russia. Good Job Comrad, we are all equal, but some are more equal than others.

I'm outraged by your selection of Putin, placing Al Gore in second place. Al Gore is a magnificent man and leader. Who on earth has had more impact on the world this year than he? He walks on water. You caved to conservatives. All of you need to accept he will go down in history as one of the greatest men of all time.
As a colleague of mine just said, Time Magazine is a shadow of the publication it used to be -- Readers Digest in a larger format. I'm surprised you didn't pick Dick Cheney.

If you notice a trend with the Liberals, ALL of the problems in the world can always be fixed If...... we just raise taxes more. Name a problem or a program that they dont try this on? NASA has release that the temperature on Mars and Europa have increased, so how can Man be responsible for that? But if they raise taxes enough, then they can solve that problem too.

Your comment: I am extremely, personally offended by Time's choice of Putin. Choosing Valdimir Putin as "Person of the Year" implies to many people that Time magazine thinks this THUG is admirable, or, at least accomplished in some meaningful way. Putin is an Ex-KGB man, almost assuredly responsible for untold deaths. He has absolutely no respect or feeling for civil liberties or human rights of any kind. Perhaps it's time for Time to discontinue its STUPID practice of electing "Person of the Year" if Putin is the best it can do.
Posted by Don G. Bell in Ridgecrest, California
It is easy to see why Time Magazine is headed for the dumper. To select a former head of the KGB,
(who probably ordered the true torture of thousands of his countryman in the Gulags) while persecuting
the CIA for months on end over 2 waterboarding incidents is absurd. Putin should be named Tyrant of the Year, not Man of the Year.

What is TIME thinking by naming this man Person of the Year!! I suppose if Hitler were alive you would have named him!! Let's take a look at all the other contenders....gee, they actually made a significant positive impression this last year but hey, that's not what this honor should be about. Let's put someone who is bringing Russia back to it's level as when Hitler ruled!!! I can imagine Putin's reaction to this! As if he wasn't insane enough in believing what he is doing is right, the U.S. now supports it as well! TIME actually honored a man who believes in murder, taking away a persons' right to civil liberties......how sick is that? I hope that this comes back to bite you in the *ss!!! Shame on you Time Magazine!!!

I am dismayed for our future if the previous comments are sincere. Most commentators seemed clueless that the "person of the year" is not an award for positive achievement., but rather an acknowledgement of that person's influence.
Do they have any understanding of history instead of firing off knee-jerk opinions?
Secondly, two of these critics ( I didn't read them all--too depressing), in bashing the choice of Putin, spelled rogue as "rouge", meaning "red", and "intellegent" instead of the correct "intelligent."

Time magazine should be ashamed of recognizing Putin in this manner. You clearly admit, consistent with the facts, that he has become the ruthless dictator of Russia, its new czar, with the goal of moving his country to a world power position and a most dangerous global menace.
That emerging deja-vu scenario in Russia of the old USSR aggressiveness, violation of human rights, creation of international turmoil and persistent Cold War tensions over past decades is certainly not something to be admired or honored. Putin is just another in a long historical line of opportunistic tyrannnical thugs who wield power at any cost, certainly not a laudable or remarkable achievement. Your Person of the Year candidates should only be those individuals who are widely distinguished, respected and have made important contributions to the advancement of humankind or the world.
Yes, almost any of your alternative choices for 2007 would have been enormously better and deserving than Putin.

You lost my magazine subscription some time ago and now you've lost all credibility by even considering Al Gore. To consider someone like him who is a hypocrite of the largest kind, espouses fuzzy science as fact, and is outright dishonest continues to reinforce your lack of any form of journalistist objectivity and a continuous love affair with radical liberals. This is a man who created a bogus business that conveniently overlooks a fundamental basis in science with his so called Carbon Credits scam and preaches "Do as I say, but I'm exempt" while wasting electricity in a mansion he never earned.
I'd rather see some unrecognized medic serving in Iraq or Afghanistan recognized as Person of the Year than your garbage choices!

I think the nuclear issue was the dominant one of 2007 so TIME should have named someone else, but I can still see Putin as a logical choice. I have to laugh at some of the reader responses here.
Putin is a "communist" ? Where are you people getting this? Do you even know a damn thing about the man or his policies? Not ONE of them has anything to do with central planning or communism. He has no intention of restoring the USSR and has said anyone who wants to see it restored "has no brain".
Second, he his shipping weapons to Iran and Syria and killing American troops? Huh? Where are you getting this stuff? And please, the nuclear deal with Iran was BEFORE all the American war-mongering against Iran, they have every right to do business with them. If you think every country needs to stop doing business with anyone the U.S. doesn't like then sorry to say, you don't live in reality.
And judging by the majority of reader comments, none of you live in reality.

What in the HELL are you thinking!
This is the biggest insult to the United States I have ever seen or heard of.! I'll bet Putin is laughing his butt off at you. I apologize to the President, our men and women who are fighting against people like this (who are going in the back door) to destroy us and YOU give them an award and more prestigious exposure. You should be run out of this country and be sent to live under this disguised dictator's rule. Then you can get a magazine up and running there and put Bush's picture on the front of that magazine as Person of the Year. But they would throw you in prison for that! What an idiot!

No, Time, you did not get it right. It doesn't surprise me that Al Gore is near the top of the list, but it does surprise me that Petraus made your top five. I don't really understand the Rowling pick, but she's pretty harmless. Many others have commented on the leader of the largest communist country. What is truly amazing is that you have chose Vladimir Putin as the Person of the Year. This is a man that is linked to the murders of many dissenters, thirteen of whom were reporters. Maybe this is the real reason you chose: Out of fear. Where were the questions about Andrei Kozlov, Anna Politkovskaya, and the rest. Maybe your reporter loses access to the Poloniun-210 vaccine if that part of the story gets published...

I thought "Person of the Year" was an Honor? It now seems it's the person who strikes the most Fear in Our Hearts....Gee, How come Kim Jong IL wasn't on the list...? I would like to see someone who's noted for their Humanitarian Efforts...someone who's concerned about the planet, or perhaps someone concerned about our Childrens' Minds and did more for getting kids to read than any school program....or the people rebuilding New Orleans, or the volunteer army of men and women now returning to an indifferent VA, Government, and a nation that has no jobs and no housing....The U.S.

I am sorry but I couldn't pass or ignore your comment on the World Wide Web being invented by the Military..
The world wide web was created by Sir Tim Berners-Lee who worked at CERN in Geneva Switzerland.
and to your most likely suprise the turning point for the World Wide Web began with the introduction[] of the Mosaic web browser in 1991, a graphical browser developed by a team at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (NCSA-UIUC), led by Marc Andreessen.
Funding for Mosaic came from the High-Performance Computing and Communications Initiative, a funding program initiated by then-Senator Al Gore's High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991, also known as the Gore Bill.[10]
Allow me to inform you better of whom/why/when are the responsibles of the opportunities you are enjoying today when using the World Wide Web and internet.

I must admit to being very puzzeled and not a little disappointed that you failed to choose Al Gore over someone who has displayed a blatant hunger for power and disregard for human rights. As a registered Republican, I can honestly say that my frustration doesn't have political roots. Rather from a moral position, I would have chosen Al Gore over Vladimir Putin. I admire the fact that Al Gore has displayed a tenacity and respect for the US political system even though there are many who doubt that the same system treated him fairly. It is indeed unfortuante that Time magazine seems to have made it's choice for reasons which have something other than an ethical or moral basis.

I also find most of the comments here ridiculous. Don't believe all the stuff your government (or your media) is trying to put into your head! Come to Russia, see it for yourselves, talk to Russian people and then say if your original views were proven.
I believe I have the right to say that the American media (at least, most of them) cannot be called unbiased and free. I've been to the US 8 times, I watch American news channels and can see for myself and compare the various prospectives.
What do you base your judgements on? Bush's speeches? Articles in The Washington Post? Have you read a single article in a Russian newspaper? Have you seen a single Russian TV show? If not, how can you draw such conclusions?

You people are out of your collective minds. Really. He cares nothing about civil liberties or the people of his country. The country is run by mob unions and underhanded activities and you call that stability? Same goes for your 3rd choice and your 2nd choice is as appalling as the fact the Gore won a Nobel Prize. If he practiced what he preached it would be different. This is insanity. This is why our country will one day "give itself away". Let's lift up the people who deserve to be lifted up and not tolerate the people who have no respect for human lives. Seriously, this speaks volumes about your coverage of world events and the political skew behind your operations - and of course your desire to sell magazines. There is not one solid reason for the top three choices. None. I hope you people can look yourselves in the mirror when you wake up in the morning. Maybe you should think about the mothers and children in Russia and China and put your families in their places? Then cast your vote... I should have my head examined for even taking the time to comment on this insanity.

II understand your choice, but I candidly almost experienced physical illness and anger at Putin's selection. Al Gore unequivocally receives my vote for Person of the Year, based upon Time's criteria. For him to share the Runner-Up Position with Petraeus & Ms. Potter is insult to injury. I compliment Time on providing the consumer this forum to respond and/or vent. I do not want to expend any more effort justifying my position - but I will say that Time does make a wordly difference with this feature each year. I am happy with the Internet and your availability, as then I need not purchase the magazine throughout the year.

What a load of crap! Since we're in the middle of WW IV (WW III = Cold War), the persons of the year should have been the men and women of the US military. They're the ones that put their lives on the line everyday to guarantee our freedoms and way of life. However, since the award is titled person of the year, my choice would have been General Petraeus. Putin and China's leader are dictators, Gore is the blowhard leader of a new age religion, and JK Rowling is a fraud.

Your selection was spot on. Here in the States, we have seen little in the press of the amazing transformation going on in Russia. Putin is probably the world's greatest head of state, and the people in Russia know it. Russia will soon be the only country that is truly Christian. Putin in a sincere Orthodox Christian believer, and his support of moral programs is exactly what Russia needs to survive.
It is we in the States, going down the double tubes of imperialism and immorality, who have the problems! Americans WAKE UP!

I applaud the Times Maganzine for picking such an unpopular person as Vladimir Putin as "Person of the Year". It was a gutsy move knowing that the choice will reflect on the poor magazine sale. Mr. Putin did not do anything for the Russian people or for rest of the world. This also hold true for other runner-ups. The two names that comes to mind is General Petraeus and Al Gore. I would have voted for General Petraeus in a nano second if he had kicked some butts in Afghanistan and not in Iraq. Without any question, he is a great soldier, but his talent is being used in the wrong place for wrong agenda. That leaves Al Gore. For those people who said he didn't do anything, he has, at least, bought the global warming to the world attention. Nations around the world are more aware of pollutions affecting climate change than before. This outcome alone should have put Al Gore on the Time's cover.

I would rather find the good in people than dwell on the negative character. I agree with you on your choice simply because Mr. Putin has brought Russia out of destruction and has stood his ground doing so. He doesn't need our Liberal input in bringing about the major changes taking place. I don't agree with some of his methods but he is the one dealing with the Russian people and he knows them best.
I found myself agreeing with an a lot his responses to your questions and especially to the one about luck. I agree whole heartedly with him. There is more to admire about him than we have been informed of. Why couldn't you have made your interview more widely available to the masses?
On the other side, I am so thankful that your 2nd choice was flopped on us to gag on! Oh, please enough of Al Gore for a life time. When he starts taking what he is telling everyone else about the atmosphere of our planet, then maybe what he says will mean something to the rest of us.
You did good in your choice but I would never have considered him with the understanding of the man I have had all of this time. That conversation changed my opinion greatly.
My choice would have been Tony Blair and he wasn't even in consideration. So what do I know about importance? But he has accomplished a lot for this generation and of course some of it is subject to disapproval but then, isn't that the way real humans are.
Good choice!

Why do I say "Same Old! Same Old!" when it comes time for Time to name the "Person of the Year". Your constant habit of ruling out real American Patriots or people of values and morals is annoying and suspect. You've selected a man, Putin, who may have murdered dozens of people as a KGB Agent. Or it's possible he may become one of America's formidable antagonist. What's next? Osama Bin Laden or, maybe, Sean Penn? Hey! There's always Fidel. Or did you? I think he might have been named Person of the Year a while back. And so, "Time Marches On" Remember that one?.....Rudolph J.

I generally agree with the selection, but I am shocked by the comments - those who compare V.V. Putin with Hitler or use words like "communism" in the post are clueless - they are just comics readers. I doubt they have read the article where you explain your choice. I did not expect such a selection and I think I will get the subscription.

Putin? please!
stomping on others is all he knows. Shame on Time.
And Al Gore, the man(?) with the childs temper, wow, he really loves his country based on all the good things he says about us while on foreign soil. Hey, maybe he's related to Jimmie bad mouthing Carter.
Oh well.

If Stability is your Primary measure, then all the greatest Dictators of History will be at the top of your list. Since Fear and Consequence keeps most mere mortals in their place, and their tongues quiet. If Influence is your secondary measure, then all the greatest terrorists, people behind the inquistions, and the constant preying upon the meek, will surely find their way onto your list. I am not saying that you are wrong in your judgements, however, As a Race, we should attempt to remove the spotlight from those, that see their acts of horror, as a method to bring the spotlight onto themselves. Power for Powers sake, is surely a blight upon our world.

Your choices for "person of the year" and the runner-ups are neither provocative nor well-conceived. Rather, they are asinine and, in the case of Algore, transparent and agenda-oriented. Your choices of Putin and Jintao as runner up, rank up there with Arafat winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Your choice of Gore as one of the runners-up ranks right up there with ... well, with Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize. Rowling? Don't get me started on that socially trendy literary flake. Keep going, TIme, keep insulting the intelligence of the American people. Soon you and the NY Times can go hand-in-hand into the wild blue yonder (or whatever color the sky is in your Bizarro world). Can you say "readership plunge"?

Once again, you've out done yourselves! I'm sorry to say I was once a subscriber. The only finalist that deserved it was the General. I bet even Putin can't believe it.

Unbelievable!!!! I could care less about your dumb magazine, and never, ever would purchase it in a million years. I saw your choice on my computer news and just could not understand why so many, who have so much, due to the freedoms we have in this country, choose to glorify nations and leaders who would never let them succeed in their countries. You think your opinions are worth so much, try selling your thoughts for a paycheck in some of these countries you seem to idolize. Your desire to somehow shame America shows how little you really understand about the world we live in and REAL life. Your magazine and its writers are a pathetic excuse for journalism or even story telling. I wish all of you America haters would just give back your citizenship and go live in these "worldly havens" you so admire. You suck!
