Ok, I’m a little biased here, but I think PianoWorld.com is one of the most interesting and useful sites on the Web.

The world famous Piano Forums at Piano World will reach the 1 Million Post mark this Wednesday. For a niche web site run by one person, that’s a lot of posts!

Piano World averages over 185,000 page views a day.

PianoWorld.com, proof the piano is still popular, and fun.

How about a site that isn’t a fluff piece of garbage? Try Democracy Now! (www.democracynow.org) for example–an actual news site that provides actual news without all of the kitten-in-a-tree/ news-of-the weird nonsense that infects other “news” sites. Some people, believe it or not, are actually interested in knowing what’s going on in the world, and Democracy Now! offers an amazingly accurate barometer for what stories will be reaching the mainstream headlines, often months in advance, whereas corporate media sources like Time Magazine too often put commercial interests before accurate reporting.

My new favorite website is Less Accounting (http://lessaccounting.com), which I’ve been using to run my small business for months now. It’s become the most visited site on the web after my email and I think the team did a really great job building the app. It makes complicated accounting procedures simple for non-CPAs, which is huge since I do all of my own records keeping.

This was an insignificant wed site last year, but it’s worth studying what it says this year. It’s religious. Yes, King Jesus comes in the year 2008. NOBODY believes it, but prophecy will be fulfilled. As it was in the days of Noe, it is today. We have concentrated on EVERYTHING else to think about and make our lives comfortable, but guess what? WE have forfgotten about the real meaning of life. Jesus comes back this very year!

    Some of my faves:

I get all of my recipes from Allrecipes.com. You will not use any other site, guaranteed.

I always use Kayak.com to search for cheap travel. TravelZoo.com is another great site for travel bargains.

I use Zannel.com to send pictures to my friends from my cell. Its Twitter on steroids.

I love PopCandy.com for my pop culture fix. A lot better than PopSugar which tends to be a little tween for my tastes.

    TelevisionWithoutPity is a “must” site.

And Last.FM is a pretty good “scrobbler” for music lovers.

“Free your books, the rest will follow.” That’s the motto of 2SWAP.com, my website dedicated to freeing captive books in America.

There are probably more than a hundred books on your bookshelf that you keep not because you want or need them, but because you don’t know what to do with them.

Take a book down, offer it up to the 2swap community, mail it out if you get a request. Then use your credit to claim any other book listed on 2swap.

    Spread knowledge.
    Save a tree.
    Save money.

Hi Anita, I didn’t see many “Arty” sites on the list. Perhaps Sketchplanet (http://www.sketchplanet.com) can be submitted.

There are many online drawing sites already on the net, but Sketchplanet restricts drawing space to allow for more detailed work and less pressure to fill up the space. The navigation and layout is clear, with Web 2.0 features such as placing your drawings on your own site as well a personal RSS feed.

nomoremedicines.com is a great site that I highly recommend. There is a lot of medical information mostly for non-doctors and also some for doctors. There are videos, some that teach you about getting or staying healthy, some that are screamingly funny and some that expose the nefarious plots of Big Pharma (aka drug companies) to convince everyone to take their &*$%# pills, everyday for the rest of your life!! The site and the book you can order there shows you can control high blood pressure and cholesterol and a lot of other common problems without drugs! A must visit site for anyone taking a bunch of pills everyday even though they’re not really sick

As good as Kongregate is, Newgrounds (http://www.newgrounds.com) was one of the first sites to collect Flash games and Animations and was the first place to find many games and animations that are now ubiquitous on the web (like the Numa Numa dance). As Newgrounds is based around community input, there are of course many terrible submissions that sometimes mask the gems. Click on “Flash Portal” to see the easy “Best Of All Time” list.

Also, the Kongregate entry mentions the “simple html-based games on Addicting Games”. That’s just incorrect. Addicting Games is almost entirely Flash games, and features many of the same games found on other popular Flash Portals.

Gasbuddy also has, for the most part, interesting articles which are open for member comments. This causes an infusion of ideas. some off the wall and some well thought out. There are a few who post one syllable response just to get points and although annoying they are overlooked and the discussion continues.

PawnGame.com, the Ultimate in Flash Shooters. You control your own Man, using the keyboard to move and the mouse to switch weapons and shoot. Climb ladders, fall hundreds of feet (and land safely), Communicate with your team to remain as effective as possible, and a good deal more.

    Combat:
In each match, you will be placed on a team on a map in a room you chose from the main lobby. three seconds later, you will spawn. Left click to shoot, scroll wheel/# pad to switch weapons (you’ll usually have 1 at the start), space to jump, and arrow keys/ASWD to move.

    Weapon System:
When you kill another player (don’t worry…he’ll be back), you get a KillCoin, or KC. when you die, you’re shown a Menu of guns with numbers, varying from 1-38 (but not like 1,2,3,4). these numbers are the prices. you use KC’s to buy them, providing you have enough.you click on a gun, and it turns green. you now have that gun. A couple of Kills and Deaths later, you want a better gun. you go to the gun(s) you already have (the green ones), you click them, and they turn back to normal color. you no longer have those guns, and you’ve got your kc’s back. Shotguns, Sniper Rifles, Automatics, and even a Laser that shoots through the walls (and does massive damage). these are the weapons you can buy.

    Deathmatch Mode:
Team up with 4 other players to Defeat the enemy, another 5 players. Simple, right?

    Assualt Mode :
One side is Blue, one Side is Red. The Blue side takes control of a maze-like fortress, the Red side infiltrates it. The Blue side protects an “Artifact”, the Red side destroys it. The team who can successfully do this is proclaimed the winner. It’s also pretty simple, right?

    Maps:
Maps are two-dimensional, and are made of squares. You can move left, right, up, down, or diagonally. Ladders take you up, simulated Gravity brings you down. Because the Maps are 2-D, there is the possibility for places you can hide in, and it’s exceedingly easy.
There are 5 kinds of squares: Special(ladders, spawn points, etc…) background, collideable, foreground, and (recently added) destructible. #’s 2, 3, and 4 out of those are most common. Background squares are scenery only. Collideable squares are what you walk on, hide behind, etc… and Foreground squares are what you can hide behind. Destructible can be destroyed, and special have special purposes.

    Rank:
Pawn has a Simple-but-excellent ranking system. Players Start off at n00b Status(which means you’re a Newbie, New player, Noob, etc…). as you kill other players and compete in matches, you get points. at 1000 points(which isn’t hard) you’re no longer a n00b. at that point, you would now have a Bronze Bar next to your screen name(which is displayed at almost all times) instead of the n00b Baby Binky. the more points you get, the higher you rank. from 1 bar, 2 bars, an upwards arrow, and a lot more, with each having bronze, silver, gold, and white to go through. with names that go with them, such as 1st lieutenant, commander, and (the highest one) General of the Army (4 million points, no one is there as of now), the game becomes very interesting…

    Clans:
Things get even more interesting when you add Clans into the Mix. a Clan is a group of players who communicate, Fight alongside eachother, and do battle with other clans. really, it’s very fun to be in a clan. and it’s really fun to be in pawn.

Fark.com belonged on this list. As the original news aggregator it helped to expand the horizons of the early web and “farkers” are one of the web’s original communities. Fark threads get nasty, they get contentious, often they get vapid. But they do their best to remain “SFW,” something that not all of the sites you’ve mentioned to.

That said, it would be impossible to put multiple centralized communities in this list: the voting would have become a contest spurred on by community leaders. Gabe of Penny Arcade has already asked for top rating as a “ten years” present from his fans, and the voting shows it’s working. If such geek community sites as somethingawful, 4chan, or fark had a stake in this race, you would have multiple entries drawing thousands of 100% votes per hour

For the best in political viewpoints from noted journalists, politicans, writers, etc. giving you perspectives you probably won’t see anywhere else. 10 sites we can’t live without? Whose this “we”: I know I can certainly live without them; well maybe one or two are useful. Should be 10 sites Anita Hamilton can’t live without.

With the anime industry growing rapidly in the United States, fan-created works such as wallpapers and even interactive personality quizzes and E-Cards are becoming more and more popular. A simple place online to find this kind of fansite, is http://www.theotaku.com It deals, not only with anime, but video games, movies, and music. With some games, like Oblivion, becoming more popular as far as the PC version goes, companies like Bethesda(sp?) are giving players the chance to create “mods”, personalized bits of data, used to make gameplay a bit cooler. While there are a bunch of company-run websites that host these kinds of mods, and let others download them, I believe the best site, to be one created by two people. http://www.raylon.org

I cannot understand how sparkpeople.com was overlooked! Here’s a site all about helping people create and live healthy lifestyles, whether your goal is to lose weight, gain weight, maintain, just eat better or be more active.

There is a huge community to support one another, both on the general message boards and in the hundreds of Spark Teams that one can join based on your interests, your location, your goals, etc. Beyond the community support , which truly is unmatched, there is a vast wealth of health articles, exercise demonstrations, and tools that allow you to track your fitness activities and your nutrition.

The two best things about SparkPeople? 1) It doesn’t matter which diet/program you are following - you can either use a plan SP creates for you based on your goals and preferences, or it can simply provide support even if you are doing low carb, low calorie, on weightwatchers, Jenny, South Beach, Atkins, etc.; and 2) IT’S ALL FREE!

I find list Gaia as a one of the top 50 sites - especially stating it for teens. The truth is although they say one thing, they actually are an adult site. An example would be one Alruna’s Rose, one of their evoluting items. The site tektek shows how graphic it is. They even joke about cyber sex being ok. They say they are PG13 only because they couldn’t open the site the way they wanted to and that most of the players are actually adults. With that in mind, why don’t they just change the site to Adult Only, because they want money and nothing is more shocking to find you child wrapped in the arms of something that is truely not child friendly. I had an account (actually it is still open since they will not allow an account to be closed), I’ve seen and been attacked by others. It is not a top choice regardless of what it appears, the dark underbelly is its true nature.
