CIA Spills its Dirty Secrets

Euphemistically calling them "reminders of some things the CIA should not have done," CIA Director Michael V. Hayden released hundreds of secret agency documents yesterday. Known as "the family jewels" inside the agency, the 693 pages of documents detail "assassination plots against foreign leaders such as Cuba's Fidel Castro and the secret testing of mind-and-behavior altering drugs like LSD on unwitting U.S. citizens," says CNN. Even Hollywood scriptwriters would have a hard time selling some of the hair-brained plots. Take the Castro hit where the CIA worked with an aide of famed recluse, Howard Hughes, to recruit Chicago mafia dons to poison the Cuban leader. Elmore Leonard - you are taking notes?

The fight to control a rampaging California wildfire has suffered a setback as the blaze "jumped a fireline, forcing a new round of evacuations," reports the AP. Authorities have warned that strong winds forecast for the Lake Tahoe area on Wednesday could fan the flames says the BBC. So far the fire has destroyed 200 homes and forced 1,000 people to flee.

Finally in national news, while we'd like to talk more about the imminent arrival of the iPhone, if only for the Google love it might bring the Ag, there are more serious issues at play: In Venice, Florida, golfer Bruce Burger nearly lost a limb when a nearly 11-foot alligator attacked him as he was trying to retrieve a lost ball from a course pond. Brings a whole new meaning to the term water hazard.
