Teaching English in Japan via mugging

You might have read about the collapse of Japan's largest English-teaching school, Nova. From the Wall Street Journal:

...more than 4,000 foreign-language teachers working for Nova [were] slammed by the biggest scandal in Japan's foreign community in years. The company, renowned in Japan for the hip-shaking pink bunny in its commercials, had been on a hiring binge, setting up recruitment offices in the U.S. and the United Kingdom and prowling college campuses offering jobs.

This sucks for the thousands of Americans, Australians and Brits teaching there:

Now, the Nova teachers are jobless and those who have lived from paycheck to paycheck are stuck in Japan. Some have been threatened with eviction from their apartments because Nova, which had provided housing and deducted the rent from teachers' salaries, stopped paying rent months ago. In the past week, 300 Nova teachers have swarmed the usually orderly employment agency office in western Tokyo, called Hello Work, seeking jobs.

Surely you've heard teaching English in Japan is lucrative work that requires not much more than the ability to speak.

English-conversation schools are a big business in Japan. Millions of Japanese dream of speaking English. But the six years of language classes given in middle and high schools focus on grammar, not conversation, so few children learn to speak English well. The $3.5-billion-a-year foreign-language-education industry teems with more than 1,100 companies catering to about two million students, according to the Japan Association for the Promotion of Foreign Language Education.

Fear not, Japanese friends. Who needs Nova when we have muggers? This video is an excellent teaching tool for young Japanese ladies who wish to travel overseas but know they will be robbed by two white men wielding a butter knife. And why just learn another language when one can combine the tutorial with upper-body muscle toning? Just do as the automatons in the aerobics uniforms do, and soon you'll be warding off your attackers fluently and attractively! (Thanks to my colleague Sora Song, who apparently spends her office hours trolling YouTube for weird clips from Japan.)

It might surprise you that right up until the end Nova was recruiting new teachers. Lucrative? In the old days I suppose it was, but the eiakiwa chains have moved away from hiring on monetary based incentives and switched to pushing the value of the work as a possible 'career' opportunity.

How Nova, and other eikaiwa for that matter, promoted teaching positions is quite different from the reality. Necessary though, as it's difficult to get high quality candidates to fly to a foreign country for only a year and then leave. Some deception is obviously required.

Nova was a foreign company located in Japan, most of the people that went to work for them had very little information about the situation or the reputation of the company.

Ah, death to the beast--if ever there's cause for a "pour" this is it. My former mates from Nova's in Otaru, Okamoto and Tarumi (the latter two in your native Kobe) have already exchanged celebratory emails about this news--our Korea-Oz-"the Japan"-American stream is full of bile for the company. Feel sorry for the employees (and the young J-women were the most exploited and horribly underpaid) but in the end, I reckon it'll be the best thing that ever happened to them. Now we can only hope (and god I'm serious on this one) that Sahashi-san opens up his stomach.

MY SON WENT OVER TO JAPAN ALMOST A YEAR AGO TO TEACH ENGLISH. HE WANTED TO TRAVEL AND TO TEACH. HE IS FLUENT IN SPANISH AS WELL AS ENGLISH AND WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO LEARNING JAPANESE AS WELL. THEN NO PAYCHECK FOR 2 MONTHS AND WAS LIVING OFF SAVINGS, WHEN BANKRUPTY WAS ANNOUNCED THERE WAS NO MONEY FOR LIVING AND UNEMPLOYMENT TAKES TIME OVER THERE. I HOPE THE OTHER TEACHERS ARE OKAY AS MANY OF THEM HAVE FAMILIES.

I am an American working in Japan (not as an English teacher, though), and I learned of this catastrophe (with NOVA, not the mugging video) through Japanese TV. I have 2 comments on the Nova story that I haven't seen reported in the foreign media coverage:

1. It seems to me that the original legal decision that precipitated the collapse of NOVA was horrible. What happened was that NOVA, like most language schools, offered lower rates for students who take longer courses, e.g., if you sign up for 10 lessons you pay 5000 yen per whereas if you sign up for 20 lessons you only pay 4000 per lesson. They also had a refund policy where if you canceled before the end of your course you could get a refund for your unused lessons. The plaintif in this case signed up for a long course but then canceled 1/4 of the way through. He demanded 3/4 of his money back, but they only offered the difference between what he paid and the price for a shorter course corresponding to the lessons that he took. The school's policy seems completely reasonable to me - otherwise no one would enroll in a shorter course, they would just register for a longer one and quit when they've had enough. After all, the whole point of volume discounts is to offer discounts only if people buy more! But the court ruled in his favor (the difference was no more than a couple of hundred bucks, and probably much less), and even worse, penalized the school by forbidding them to take on new students for a period of time (6 months, I think). Moreover, the school was thoroughly demonized in the media, which caused many students to cancel, and receive these large refunds, while students who had canceled in the past also lined up to collect. Without any new source of revenue the school quickly fell into the red, which led to a kind of bank-run situation where the students rushed to cancel before the school went insolvent. I largely blame the idiotic court decision for this disaster. But then, Japanese courts destroy companies all the time, usually with this same technique of forbidding them to take on new clients.

2. There doesn't seem to be much sympathy among the Japanese for the teachers who've been thrown out of work. I watched a TV program where foreign teachers were interviewed who hadn't been paid in 2 months, were now deeply in debt to pay their rents and eat, were about to be kicked out of their apartments, and couldn't even afford to fly back home. Moreover, NOVA had a 60% market share in the English language teaching business, so all these thousands of teachers who are now out of work are competing against each other for 60% fewer jobs (which are already occupied anyway). Sure, eventually new schools will open up, but that will take time, and in the meantime these people are starving. Keep in mind that most of them are young people with little money, no real job experience or skills except teaching English, and poor Japanese language ability.

But on the program that I watched (NHK news), after describing the hardships that these students faced, the TV anchor had the gall to say, "but of course the people who are affected the most by this are the students"!
