Why link online with a stranger?

Some social networking systems have a "knack" of sending "Friends" requests to people when someone simply wants to link to you, or to get your RSS feeds, and the like.

There's also the Facebook phenomenon where people get "ranked" higher in internal listings based on some hypothetical gauge of popularity derived from how many people have you in their friends list - since such things cross-link, a lot of people will ask to be your friend in the hopes you'll reciprocate, hence raising *their* profile.

So it's less a case that people actually want to be your friend out of the blue (in the sense of the site), it might just be they want to get auto-updated on about what you had for breakfast - which quite possibly is freakier in and of itself, I guess.

At the end of the day, the old saw holds true: Beware geeks bearing gifts.

I'm not so sure that I'd do it with complete strangers, but I see no harm in connecting with blog readers and commenters. Every relationship has to start somewhere, and I've already gained several interesting and beneficial relationships through people who happened to visit my blog and later ended up connected on Facebook.

If you want to market yourself at all you should totally jump on the networking bandwagon and start making connections with people. You never know when it will come in handy to know someone. You might be able to help them out, and someday they might be able to help you out when Time goes out of business. :)

Because they're attractive?

That said, it still creeps me out a little bit when people "friend" me without at least sending a message first. What I want to know, is when will we have an Emily Post for the Interwebz?

There are 2 aspects I think.

The bad aspect. The complete stranger to be also a complete jurk. :)

The other one, the positive one. The complete stranger to be a person that you want to meet, that you have something to learn from, that you want to link with for different reason.

Both aspects happened to me. :) I use different social networks. Twitter I think it's the best. Or Linked In.

Facebook it's too I don't know "pick-up kind of network"

I respect MySpace also for the positive things it brought to music industry.

Here's what I think: To YOU they are a stranger, but to them, they feel like they know you. They see your blog every day, read about your life, and really feel like they know you. To them, adding you on LinkedIn or Facebook is no big deal. I think they forget that you do not know who they are. If it was a myspace age, that's one thing (that community is much more accepting of the practice of adding strangers), but I do think it's odd to add someone on Facebook you don't know -- it's a much less creepy site with better etiquette than myspace (I like to think, at least). If someone adds me on Facebook and I don't know them, I either reject the invite or write a message asking them if we know each other. I think if someone is going to add you on there and you don't know each other, they should at least write a note along with it, maybe saying "I'm a big fan of your blog!" or something. So, wanna be Facebook friends? ;)

Another WiP post that I agree with! I have gotten some "friend" requests from other people who "Dugg" the same article that I did - but I was anti-social and didn't befriend them. A fair number of colleagues use Linked In, but I don't really understand the point of that, either. I wonder if people are doing these things because they want to be hip, like the young 'uns - but are secretly bewildered... I just don't get it...

My response won't be as deep as the ones above, but to be honest, some people just want to seem popular and look like they have a lot of friends. I've even heard from one guy who said that his goal was "to collect 2000 friends on Facebook." Not only did he sound like a loser in saying so, but he also sounded like he probably didn't have any friends in real life.

For the record, I personally wouldn't friend you on Facebook--not because I don't think you're awesome (your blog is now the only one that I read regularly), but because I sometimes post your WiP blog posts with my analyses of what I think about them and about the topics that you write. Don't worry, though, you always get credit and I always include the link to your blog...Consider it free advertising.

To get a job at Time magazine?

In your case I think EmilyStarbuck is right - people feel like they know you... and they sort of do - which you don't want to dwell on or you might not write so honestly. I think this is the tough part about blogging and social networks - I am somewhat older and am sort of appalled/intrigued by having so much info out there.

I'd like to propose that at some point you so sort of a poll and see what the age deliniation is between people who are comfortable with all this and those who aren't; we all do orbit each other at some point whether it is socially or through work.

okay, but if you're a blog reader, why wouldn't you identify yourself as such? i feel i know my readers, too--or at least my regular commenters. only you use tags that may or may not reflect your names. if i get friended by jane smith, that just confuses me.

and how would friending me get anyone a job? i'm just a lowly writer.

You're a lowly writer - with a blog that appears on TIME's website, that makes you "someone".

I'm a lowly sci-fi author, and I still hear about tons of people who somehow "know" me a few weeks after I've done a con panel.

So it's probably similar to how that sometimes works - you're a potential "stepping stone". I've been asked if I can somehow help to get a manuscript past a publisher's Cerberus before - maybe people think that by "knowing you", you'd put in a good word for them?

I don't use Facebook myself, but if I did, I doubt I'd put much store in how many people wanted to link to me as a "friend". I'd settle just for a note saying "Your writing didn't suck as bad today" :)
