Women can't excel at dangerous jobs unless they're allowed to try

Did anyone see this story in WaPo today? Ann Scott Tyson writes,

Pfc. Monica Brown cracked open the door of her Humvee outside a remote village in eastern Afghanistan to the pop of bullets shot by Taliban fighters. But instead of taking cover, the 18-year-old medic grabbed her bag and ran through gunfire toward fellow soldiers in a crippled and burning vehicle.

Brown won a Silver Star for her bravery. But she also lost her post.

Within a few days of her heroic acts, however, the Army pulled Brown out of the remote camp in Paktika province where she was serving with a cavalry unit -- because, her platoon commander said, Army restrictions on women in combat barred her from such missions.

These rules were apparently forged in 1992, and critics call them outmoded in today's wars. Her commander only assigned Brown the post because he had no other medic. Brown is one of two women to ever receive the Silver Star—likely because women aren't allowed to serve in dangerous positions.

Am I the only one thinking, okay, never mind her gender—she's 18! If the military is letting soldiers that age go into combat, who cares which toilet he or she uses? Anyway, is it right for women to be held back from combat?

I was talking to my room mate about this last night, and surprisingly, we agreed.

The conclusion that we came to was that everyone should have to take the same physical exams, regardless of gender. If a woman can perform or outperform a man, there is no reason she should be held back. Now, we need to acknowledge that men and women are, on average, built physically different.

This discussion was in regards to an episode of "Rescue Me" where the fire house gets a female fire fighters and one of the characters says something to the effect of "I don't want to have to rely on some 90 lbs girl to carry me down a flight of stairs."

Now, if that girl could perform just as well as the men, who cares? Not me, that's for sure.

Same argument could be made against some men serving in combat, Jared. Have you ever heard of a man not serving because he wasn't strong enough? It's possible, I guess, but I've never heard of it. Then again, I'm not compiling statistics.

Part of the issue is the women-and-children-first argument, where men are supposed to give their lives for women, not the other way around. But then there's the very real threat of sexual abuse if a woman is captured, something that I'm sure rarely happens to men. Generally, though, if a person wants to and can physically serve, then they should be able to.

Elizabeth:

There's no good reason that women shouldn't be allowed in combat. The only reasons they might be able to come up with are a)women are somehow physically or mentally unable to be effective in combat or b)we should keep them from getting killed in order to protect the species.

Argument a) has been proven false by science. Although women are GENERALLY smaller and not as strong as men simply due to less testosterone, this does not apply to any individual woman. If they pass the same physical tests as the men, why not? And it's not like the military bans smaller than average men from combat roles. Argument b) is equally lame, especially in this day and age of a grossly overpopulated world.

So what can the reason be? Obviously logic does not dominate an organization infamous for its intolerance of homosexuals and atheists in this day and age. As for the age question, the only way you are going to convince most people to risk their lives halfway across the globe in order to kill other people's sons, daughters, husbands, wives, and parents is to brainwash them while they are very young before they have established a life where they would rather non participate in a bunch of nonsense started by the greedy egos of old men.

But I guess this radical humanist thinking is what got women thinking they could fight in combat roles in the first place. Silly liberals.

Gerry, I agree with you on the women-and-children-first mentality. But when women are already at an extremely high risk of being sexually assaulted by their male peers (as Lisa has already written about in this blog...couldn't find the posting), saying that they are more likely to be targets of sexual assaults as POW's is a rather flimsy argument.

It does, however, bring into consideration the idea that if women were empowered as combatants, the men they serve with would not see them as damsels to protect OR as potential sexual assault victims--which sounds pretty good to me.

Of the 3 components of the Army Physical Fitness Test, the only requirement that is the same for men and women is situps (78 situps earn you a perfect score). For running two miles, 13 minutes earns men a perfect score and 15:36 earns women that same score. For pushups, 71 pushups is perfect for men, and 42 is perfect for women. 42. So, Elizabeth, women do not pass the same tests as men! If the Army could keep up women's participation with higher physical fitness standards, you can be sure it would. But if they raised the standards, many women would be forced out. (Because, Gerry, if any soldier can't pass the PT test repeatedly he or she is pushed out of combat roles and eventually out of the service. It's in the regulations and I've seen it happen.) The fact is that women and men are built very differently, as Jared pointed out.

In Paktika and other parts of eastern Afghanistan, soldiers must routinely carry 100 pounds of equipment on their bodies (armor & weapons) and backs (it's too rugged to drive) while hiking up and down extremely steep mountains. At 8 to 10,000 feet. These guys are mainly infantry--a male-only branch because it is expected to engage in direct combat--but any soldier who is out there can be required to go on these missions (medical, engineer, etc). OK, so the occasional woman is capable of this...then you get the interesting situation of having one woman living on a remote FOB with 200 male American soldiers and 100 male Afghani soldiers, who in these rural areas regard women as property. Does that sound like a good idea?

I am not saying that there is an easy solution to this issue, with the sort of war we're fighting. Soldiers anywhere in Iraq or Afghanistan, not just in the hot spots, are at some risk. But you should know the facts before you start opining.

Some of you mentioned the "women-and-children first" mentality, as if it is imposed upon society. From what my husband tells me, protecting women is not a "I'm supposed to do this" reaction, but pure instinct. He says that if a woman were to be serving in the infantry next to him, his instinct to protect her in a firefight would be strong enough to conflict with his duties. In other words, her womanhood in his eyes (and all that that brings with it) would not be changed by the fact that she is "empowered as a combatant". That is obviously just his opinion, but I think you would find there are lots of good guys just like him in the Army. Do we really want to suppress that tendency?

Elizabeth, we have what is called a volunteer Army. No one is brainwashed into joining it or wanting to kill people. The US military is not your enemy. But if you still think it is, maybe you should move to eastern Afghanistan. I'm sure the men there who buy & sell women, who force their wives to wear burqas while working the fields in the desert sun would just love to hear about your radical humanist thinking.

I think MM has defended me, and I don't think anyone is going to read this thread anymore (but I've slacked off and forgot I commented in it) but I am not saying that all women are unequipped to serve in combat roles. In fact, I made it a point to specifically say that there are women who are equipped.

My point is that we should all be held to the same standards. If we want equality then we have to all accept it. There are things women can do better than men. Should men be given the opportunity to do them strictly on a quota basis? I don't think so. If a woman can pass the same tests for combat that a man can, then give her a gun and send her at the enemy. I won't argue. Men will have to adjust.

And Gerry, are you telling me that any man can serve in combat regardless of their ability? Are you seriously telling me that if I showed up to the Marines tomorrow and couldn't pass their physical that they would give me the benefit of the doubt because I have a penis and let me go to war? I highly doubt that is the case.
