Workers say: vacation? What vacation?
Ah, summer. I can practically taste the season of sangria and barbecue coming, what with the record rainfall and brisk temperatures in the Northeast. My summer will be spent tending to a newborn—who'll be not the least colicky, I just know it—and traveling with her and her sister to my family's home in Japan, where the party will be joined by my gravely ill mom and my senile old fart of a dad. Air conditioning? Who needs it in the land of hand-held fans? Comfort is for the weak. Ah, summer.
For more and more Americans, summer is merely the season in which to sweat on the way to the office. According to a just-released survey from CareerBuilder.com, 15% gave up vaca days last year because they didn't have time to take them. And going on holiday doesn't mean freedom, exactly:
A quarter (25 percent) of workers, up from 20 percent in 2007, said they stay in contact with work while on vacation, and close to one in ten (9 percent) said their bosses expect them to be working or at least checking voicemail/e-mail while on vacation.
What will we do with what little time we do take? Here's a sample from the survey:
• Traveling (36 percent)• Visiting family and friends (24 percent)
• Resting (20 Percent)
• Catching up on housework (8 percent)
• Running errands (3 percent)
Resting? Catching up on housework? Running errands? This is what we've come to, friends. Tell me: what will you be doing on holiday this summer? Will you take any days at all? If so, are you sneaking your Blackberry into your beach tote?

I graduated college a year ago this month, so I'm still getting used to the concept of summers merely being a season, rather than an extended vacation. But my mom won a grant to study in Scotland and North England for two weeks this summer (she's a high school English teacher) and I have a good friend who lives in Germany, and another friend living in France this summer. I figure this is a better time than ever to go to Europe (the only city I've previously visited in Europe is London).
I am using 10 of my vacation days for this trip (I started the year with 11), and it's overlapping with the July 4th holiday, so I'm able to take a full two-week trip. Sucks that I won't have any vacay days left for the rest of the year if I need them, but this will be totally worth it. I know people who are afraid to take more than a few days at a time off work, but hey, if they're giving you vacation days, take 'em! Especially because with us, you can't roll them over past January of the next year. And I'm just an editorial assistant...not that important yet :) Hope all is going well with the pregnancy!

Hubby and I will probably wait until Fall to take a vacation. He likes the fact that less families are traveling (he's allergic to children, or so he tells me) and we tend to go West and it's cooler in the fall. I'm not one for heat/hot weather so it works out for both of us. I really can't take time off this summer as I've got a summer intern who needs to be here when I'm here (I split my time between two hospitals) and he's got 150 hours to complete before August 8th.

I don't get summer vacations since I am out of college now. I would most likely begin the family tradition of taking vacation time during the cold month of February. Cancun here I come.

No Vacation :(
Daughter starting college in Sept. My vacation days will be spent shopping, packing and transporting her out to the cornfields of Iowa in August. Not sure my cell phone works out there, and don't much care.

Not that i'd ever pass up a trip to Europe, but how is now a better time to go than ever? the dollar's value is so low to the Euro.
anyhow, i get 10 days of vaca per year. i'm expected to answer work calls (if any come in) while i'm out (i work in real estate title). however my emails are forwarded to a manager, which is very nice. i usually come back to work with a (semi-)clean desk--but along with that comes death-stares from those who helped with my work while i was out.
i decided to try an experiment with my vaca time this year though. last year i was very conservative with it, which stressed me out to no end. this year, i'm being very liberal with it and will take off for a week's vacation in July, and see what else happens thru the end of the year. i need to try this for my own sanity.
if i'm out of PTO by December, but want to take a few days to be with my family... i'm going to just request unpaid days off and see how it goes. I'd discuss this with management beforehand, but i already know it wouldn't go over well--they want me focused on work, not vacation. i'm just going to take the risk and see how it goes.
i'm a firm believer that more vacation time equals higher job-satisfaction, less stress, and higher productivity. it's just too bad my managers are too dimwitted to realize this...
i'd take lower pay in a heartbeat for more vacation time. i make a good salary, but find myself blowing money on things like maid services to clean my house--bc hey, i don't want to waste one minute of my two measley days off cleaning (Sat/Sun)!!

"Not that i'd ever pass up a trip to Europe, but how is now a better time to go than ever? the dollar's value is so low to the Euro."
Because the person in question has a bunch of friends/relatives to stay with. The exchange rate isn't that horrible if you aren't having to pay for hotels and eating out all the time. I think that some people don't take their vacation time, more because they are saving it "just in case" than they couldn't attach a couple of days to a weekend and go on a short trip. It's more than likely people lying to themselves that they are "so important" that the office can't survive without them.

I am taking six months off to have a baby, so I will be on permanent vacation this summer. My husband only gets 10 days, but he is allowed to take unpaid days without any trouble, so the plan right now is to use up the 10 days so that he can stay at home when the baby is born, and then use unpaid days for the November/December holiday season. 10 days vacation is entirely too little, and while I admire the American work ethic many seem to have, I think (and studies show) that productivity would increase if workers were more relaxed. I'm not talking the six week standard in Europe, but three weeks seems a good starting point. I would easily take an extra week vacation over a (modest)pay increase any day. And my husband has suggested that after positive performance evals, but for some reason his boss prefers to just increase salary and allow unpaid days. I guess they don't want to negotiate vacation with all of their employees, or they feel bound by the extra week for every five years standard.
That said, there is no way my husband or I would ever let our vacation days lapse. We spend a lot of time visiting family and friends on the weekends, so we take off a lot of Friday afternoons to get a head start on the traffic. Plus, vacations are necessary for sanity, although my husband and I are both guilty of checking email on a daily basis when we are away... Ultimately, we get more done and are better at our jobs when we take vacations.

Lisa, When you go on maternity leave, could one of your colleagues inform us about the birth of baby Takeuchi Cullen? I think I can speak for everyone that we'd like to know how you guys are all doing.

Yeah, while the dollar stinks, I will have people to stay with most of the trip. Still paying for my own plane and train tickets, food, touristy stuff and a few hotel says, but the savings I'll have from crashing with others many of the nights makes the conversion not quite so bad. If I didn't know anyone there right now, I would definitely be waiting until the dollar is better.
I bought a cheap global cell phone, though it is too expensive to take work calls -- I really just want it for safety since I'll be alone on a few journeys and a few nights in France (and to keep in touch with significant other). Since I don't manage anyone and am entry-level, there's nothing urgent I'd have to deal with. I don't think I'll even be checking work email, though maybe blogging if something really worth writing about happens. I want to enjoy my trip, not be thinking about work when I'm supposed to be vacationing.

That's one thing we get so wrong in the U.S., letting the company have free reign over vacations, both in how much and when (or if) we can take them. I am an American who moved to Spain six years ago. I worked my way through the system and got my residency and work permit and work for a Spanish company. I get 30 days of vacation per year (and nobody can tell me I can't have it, as it is the law here) not to mention the local and national holidays, which result in about 45 days all together. It seems in the U.S. we give all for the company, but when it comes to something for ourselves...

I'm a grad student who has finished classes and now am just doing lab work; at this point in my PhD I'm essentially doing the same thing as someone who has a real job. We officially get 21 vacation days plus university holidays, but we're definitely encouraged to use as few, if any, as possible. I just told my boss I'd be gone for five days in July...you'd think I was taking off the entire month, or the entire summer. I think it's pretty ridiculous that bosses try to pressure employees to not take vacation time. I figure mine will just have to get over it. Yeah work is important and one should do a good job while there, but for me it will never be the number one priority in life. Seems that constantly pressuring people to work longer and longer hours is counter-productive. I know that when I'm pushed too much my work suffers. You'd think supervisors (esp those with PhD's) would have figured this out by now...

not sure if i'll get a vacation in this year yet, but anytime i do take a real vacation, it's for about 10 or 11 days, and i never, never ever, not once, check in with work. i may have to die slowly every other weekday of the year sitting at my desk, but for those 10 or 11 days, i don't have a job.

Gave up my job to do my own work, and take some classes...make much less, but my time is my own, however to use and abuse it. Commuting, business meetings...not for me.

Biff: my hub is freelance, too, but for him the effect is the opposite. He never takes time off. If work comes in, he's grabbing it. Me, I take every damn day of my admittedly European-style holiday allotment (our union negotiated a lot of days off in compensation for crap pay--and you know what? I'll take it).
I've been wondering, though...what the hell do I do with my blog? Cease and desist? Loan to a bored colleague? I'll post on this for your feedback...

DM, where do you go to school and can I transfer there?
We get 2 weeks plus federal holidays only. I'm lucky I can squeeze out time between Christmas and New Years' (I usually work from home so I can actually see my family). I am finally going on vacation. I haven't been since my honeymoon, but only going for 5 days (which wasn't as much like pulling teeth as I thought... maybe all those extra hours in the lab paid off!).
But, yes, as my last statement suggests, students are discouraged from taking any time off. We are also encouraged to work 12-18 hours a day. Regardless of our class schedule, we aren't encouraged to recharge our batteries. We'd be better research scientists if we were allowed to walk away and gain some perspective.

Lisa babe,
I also try to get as much work as I can, if I get too much (rarely), I pass it on to some other developer, and make money by NOT working, just taking a small fee as middleman.
I can continue your blog on my website, although it may be more mapping, computer vision related, but I can probably throw things in that TIME may like...for example, should workplaces pay for health insurance, or should it be like car insurance: everybody for themselves?...etc.

Some times I am struck by how elitists this blog is, and that Lisa seems to be unaware of it -- so in the US about 80% of its labors are hourly. Companies don't grantee number of hours -- so if you work week is 38 hours a week, guess what you don't get vacation or benefits, and if you are sick you are not paid. Many Americans according to the employment stats are underemployed ie - not working 40 hours a week but want to, and frequently holding two jobs - neither of which have benefits or vacation.
Salaried employees with guaranteed vacation are not the majority of the work force. Something people on this blog forget. Union jobs are an a sharp decline, non-blue collar salaried jobs, offer declining wages - no job security's, and no set hours.
Most people work in employment with less than 50 employees, so in most states they don't even have to give unpaid maternity leave or many of the benefits this blog readership take for granted. Vacation = real wage loss and possible job loss, we don't live in Europe where even the lowest paid, or part time workers have benefits, and vacation.
Vacations are a real luxury, out of reach of alot of folks, and bring it up -- and saying it is weird, shows there is a class divide, and the upper classes complete ignorance of how the majority of the country lives, look up average salaries, and note that a few high paid folks really throw off the numbers, so the mean and the average amounts are close, and ask yourself if you could live on it, then look at those salaries, and note through folks probably don't have insurance or guaranteed benefits or vacations.
I know the first response of most folks, is that I am not rich or upper class, I am middle class! -- but hey if you double the average or mean salary, you are -- even if you don't feel that you are, you share nothing in common with how the majority lives. (ie how the real middle lives)

Corinthia, you're right: I decided early on to focus this blog not on the plight of all working man, but specifically on folks like me in white-collar jobs in the U.S. I recommend Barbara Ehrenreich's blog (in blogroll at left) if you're keen to read about the issues of hourly workers and such. Thanks for stopping in anyway.

Too long ago I worked in the "corporate culture". The mistake most of us make is that we will do whatever it takes to get the job done, and to hell with our lives. Wrong, wrong, wrong. Negotiate in your hiring that your free time is just that..your time. Step on your cell phone, blow up your Blackberry, and pull the plug on your computer. 10 -20 years from now when you regret all those lost moments with your family..its too late. Lost memories are forever..they dont come back. Folks, life is too short. So enjoy the family, tell the boss your time is just that, your time. Have a great summer!!

It is sad that this is still taking place in America in 2008...we desperately need to take a good, long look at what´s going on around most of developed (and some developing countries) which would include: Canada, Europe, Japan, and parts of Latin America, see what works and how, and implement them here in the US fast before the present situation continues on or worsens. There are solutions out there...that´s for sure! Life´s too short, enjoy it while it lasts!!
